I luckily found a way to fix it, had to do it more than once ever since unfortunately. It's a bit of a pain in the ass but quickly done, without any re-install or deleting anything.

4 Steps:

- clear all 'new' marks from items, codex entries and quest missions. That might be a lot the first time you do it.

- go offline (not sure if it matters what you do first). I'm off all the time now.

- leave the game, load your game/continue

- only leave the war table by traveling. Don't return to skyhold from there. This seems to trigger the bug. Sadly, it also does if you reload some milestone saves, others seem to be fine.

You can check if it works by traveling to Val Ro, if there's music, you're save. Same goes for skyhold, but the music in town is the more obvious. If you return to skyhold at any time and find it quiet... repeat steps above.

I can't believe this bug has still not been fixed. Is this PC only? If it is, I can't say I'm surprised then.

I heard that manual saving, waiting for autosave, and then loading auto-save works

Also, aside from clearing the journal, make sure you have your current quest in the area you're currently in. Like, if you're in the Hinterlands, make sure that your current quest is from the "Hinterlands" category. Inner circle or main quests in the area do not count.

Also, someone please ease my paranoia, I manually saved in Skyhold and went to do the Crestwood thing, didn't back out of the Wartable. While in Crestwood, halfway to the town, I messed something up (didn't get an agent) so I reloaded that Skyhold save(So I didn't touch the Wartable yet). I NEVER backed out of wartable, am I still safe, I wonder?  Didn't delete any saves yet.

Am on PS4

I'm on PC and had a banter bug. I downloaded a program called Outcome, its designed for letting you play games without Origins. After that game runs better and I have no audio glitches.

If you can live without being online and getting achievements, here is the program if you want give It a try. PC version Only im afraid

Giants posts of bugs and issues with this game, and not a peep from the devs... worst service i've ever seen..

The steps seem the most useful, but I’m pretty sure I’ve consistently had  music in VR regardless of absence of banter.

I've created 2 new characters this week both ignoring the agent missions on the war table and am noticing a significant increase in banter (consistent 10-15 mins).

Has anyone else tried this? I have not tried it on an existing character, and at this point I'm too afraid to try.

I've also stopped codex clearing, except for current and completed missions, weapons, armor, accessories, and upgrades. Also stopped deleting saves and am doing mostly quick loads as opposed to loading auto saves. Seems to be working fine, though still early days.  Also have those three account settings switched off.

Kay I'm really starting to think this banter bug is area-specific. Western Approach has zero banter for me while Storm Coast or Crestwood have at least one or two per hour.

I gave up on all the journal clearings etc...

How long did you play for? Not trying to sound like bioware, but maybe you actually got all the banter for the moment if you are using the original three companions? Or maybe you were in battle a lot? I am just saying if it is one hour of silence after 3-4 hours of banter, its quite good. Try getting new companions and walking round with them (carrying on not doing table missions)

This playthrough is at 4 hours atm, so i definitely haven't used it all up. It also first hit when i changed up the party members from the original three to blackwall, sera, and viv. I'm changing back to original three now to see if it starts up again, however, banter on my other character (currently at oasis) seems to have also stopped.

I'll update if it picks up again

Edit - I've had 3 banters in 20 minutes after switching back to the original three in hinterlands. Apologies for my premature posts lol. It is strange though that switching members would affect it so much, or maybe it was purely coincidental.

Edit 2 - 3 banters over the last 3.5 hours. Seems my theory was wrong after all. Ah well...was nice while it lasted

About the first method

What changes if i fast travel by opening the map or using the fast travels doors/things?

And do i have to use a method each time i open a save or playing again?

No, you don't. Fast travels worked fine with me.

This bug annoys me so much. I'm constantly worried if I have it with a new character or not. I do ALL the workaround, but nothing seems to help when I have the banter bug. Problem is, is still do them all, everytime I start my game. I'm sick of it, but too afraid it might get worse without it. I don't want to run around for 70+ hours and all I hear from my companions is silence. I had only on PT where I heard the complete banter between three companions (Sera/Dorian, Dorian/Cole, Cole/Sera). One out of five (i'm on my sixth right now, but still in the hinterlands). And all the banter was in the Emerald Graves. In the space of four or five hours.

I have a theory regarding the workarounds:

There are NO workarounds for the banter bug. We're just lucky that the banter starts at that moment we tried them. (So it seems that the workaround was useful, but it actually wasn't.). Or that the banter just works as it is supposed to when we load a save game/create a new character. And we think it is the magic of all the ridiculous things we do to get the banter.

And there is something that puzzles me. The Devs said about the banter bug:

We’ve heard a number of reports from users concerned about party banter not firing in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

We have conducted rigorous initial tests, all of which have shown that the system is working as intended. We ran tests over the course of several hours, and compared the captured footage of the playthrough with what the banter the game had recorded as having happened. In all instances, our game records matched the recorded play. The banter also occurred as frequently as intended.

We have also similarly investigated save files that were supplied to us by users, and these were likewise found to be working properly.

How is that possible? Would your banter bugged save game work properly on my computer? And if so, why, how,...?

Sorry, I'm just frustrated. The banter part is one of my favorite things in DA, and all I want is that it works as it should. :(

Yeah I agree with you that the workarounds are possibly not actually working, it's just luck or some crap.

I'd really like to see the devs prove that they get the intended amount of banter in the Western Approach. I'm starting to think they only tried a couple of the locations and not all.

Travelling via world exits is giving me consistent banter thus far, and seems to be similar to the Val Royale workaround as it triggers music in Haven/Skyhold.

I only get banter in the Western Approach after I finished the war table mission "Crossing the Sulphurus Pits". But not very much of it.

That's one of the things driving me crazy. I never know if I should travel through world exits, through the map, or only through the war table. Can I safely travel from camp to camp, or should I walk? Too many things to considered when all I want is to simply play the game.

Same, I'm trying not to think about now, as such I just made it a habit to travel out of zones via the world exits and into zones via the war table as it seems to be working for me. Also, it seems the Western Approach banter may not be firing that often due to the many various area-based banter triggers in the area. Also, the King's road section in the hinterlands seem to yield zero banters, as hey, maybe it's due to it being a combat zone (even after you cleared out the mages/templars). I had ten banters in 3 hours in my current game in the hinterlands, all triggered on the far west and far east sides of the map.

My current character is getting consistent banter and I just hope it won't bug out again.

From what I've seen thus far, the best way to get banter is not to think about it. It fires when it fires, and it isn't based on a timer or saved games. I closed the game once at the same time a banter fired, loaded up a savegame seconds before the banter triggered, and no banter for about 30 minutes until it fired again... and again (2 in a row). The banter also seems to be related to the random-event triggers. But I don't know how it works, just observation thus far across multiple playthroughs.

I have noted though that the longer you are in an area, the more banter fires. With that 10 banter in 3 hours game, I was in the hinterlands and didn't leave for a while.

Just started playing a couple days ago. I had one minute of banter in the first 30 mins I played, and since then, nothing at all (6-7 hours I would guess, rough estimate). Aside from these supposed "workarounds", are we supposedly getting a patch for this sometime? I know it was already patched but it clearly didn't address the issue, or well enough at least.

Conal just posted in the News thread http://forum.bioware...4#entry18412936

Patch 3 will contain a randomization reduction that should help with the problem.

Editorial note, sounds like they still haven’t found the root cause but maybe this’ll help at least.

Been testing it the last few hours. Not much improvement. 3 or so banters in the last 3 hours. Western Approach remains a total dead zone.

Tested according to advice based on an official statement from Bioware to test if your banter's working (supposedly). Stand somewhere where combat can't happen and where no NPC will abruptly engage you, you should get banter ever 10-15. For me it was more like 15-20, but yes, banter now works. But only if I stand somewhere where I can't be interrupted, and don't, y'know, wander the game world fighting and talking to people. Great. Just...great.

It did work for me, to a certain extent, approximately every 15 to 20 min now instead of every hour. Banter kind of works.

Can't thank you enough for linking this. Everyone should give this a shot if things aren't working perfectly. This program fixed most of my audio and graphical glitches (namely the desyncing), and combined with the third patch I've been getting a decent amount of banter on a new character. I really appreciate the sound design now that it isn't stuttering, desyncing and seemingly compressed to hell.
