I don't have any phantom horse noises. So I figured I'd see how this goes: reinstalling the game, starting a completely new save and testing out before and after acquiring a horse... with a default world. This is going to take ages.

So do we have any updates on this from Bioware other than Allan saying he was going to to boot up the game? Half the people I know who got this game now have the bug.
Also holy **** your characters have combat dialog!? This game is a travesty of bugs and now I'm stuck with it until somebody deigns us a response.

Its just frustrating because you hear everyone talk about these awesome banters...yet you, yourself, never get to hear them. Apparently Cole and Solas talk about really cool stuff, but I never heard them speak save for 1 time about Solas' personal quest.
Also, I have only experienced the interactive banter like 3 times outside of quests? I'm not sure how many of those there are, but these are affected as well it seems?
I've not experienced any interactive banter. I'd be content with just more companion banter at this point, to be honest.
I know how you feel regarding Solas and Cole. I'm romancing him and for roleplay it makes sense for my soon-to-be rift mage to want to be bringing the two of them along most of the time. You learn so much more about your companions simply through banter. *sigh*

For those who are lucky enough for banter to work, I hear having Sera, Dorian and Iron Bull in a team is hilarious!

It's comforting to know I'm not the only one experiencing this, and neither am I paranoid for questioning the overwhelming silence during the game. I've played for over fifty hours and I've only triggered the banter every few hours. I actually noticed the quiet pretty early on, around 13 hours of my playthrough. I remember having a banter between Iron Bull and Vivienne cut off because of the rift outside Redcliffe's gate, and from then I seemed to have fewer banters. The early Hinterlands crew of Varric, Cassandra, and Solas bantered a fair few times, though.
I've had the most banters since (and by this, I mean like two or three) between Dorian and Varric, Dorian and Blackwall, and Sera and Blackwall. I've heard battle shouts before (someone needing help, their victory exclamations, etc.). I haven't paid much attention to the background music, so can't comment there. I haven't had any interactive companion banters (aside from what I think might be mandatory ones, such as the one in Val Royeaux, and another in the Redcliffe inn, both during story missions). I've been experiencing audio glitches, but that's mostly pertaining to the stuttering that occurs during cutscene dialogues sometimes. I have had location-specific dialogue trigger (such as characters complaining about the rain on the Storm Coast, or Sera making comments about the elven sites on the Exalted Plains). There was also an instance of location-specific banter that someone told me about and I was surprised to be able to trigger - if you bring Varric and Blackwall to the Storm Coast (specifically, the sea coast down near the first camp there), they should start talking about Varric's voyage from Kirkwall with Cassandra and Cullen. I've noticed that whenever I have gotten banter to trigger, it's fresh from fast traveling to a camp, and then standing idle for some time, or after having cleared an area, and standing still for a bit.
I'm playing on a PC, digital deluxe edition, custom Keep state, and vary my party combination. Zone location doesn't seem to matter. I've only used the mounts once, when I first got it, and haven't since. I don't think I've ever heard any phantom horse huffing, either.

I hear the phantom horse too...wherever I'm trekking. It seems strange since I never "see" a horse. The only time I have ridden my horse was to do the timed race. Otherwise I'm always on foot.
deluxe addition
human female
very little banter at all

Glad to know to know this is a bug. I was wondering why my party was so silent.

it's so rare in a bioware game to get so little banter. :/ Like I do every fetch quest, i go around for shards etc etc and i get 1-2 banters and that's all.
Edit: oh and i have the PC version.

I didn't know they supposed to chat a lot between each other. I played around 60 hours now, and when I got very lonely, jumped back to Skyhold at least to chat with my characters and hear their voice.
Now I know this is a bug, I will put hold on my game because I definitely missed out a lot this way:((
Ps4 btw. Costum world.

I fear I have this as well. I've played maybe 40 hours, and I hear banter roughly every half hour at the most, sometimes less depending on the region. I'm counting one liners here as well that aren't search quest related.

We got another BioWare employee confirming it's being investigated about an hour ago, this time on the Origin thread I have linked in the OP.
He asked everyone which platform they're playing on, so I suggested visiting this thread since it'll become abundantly clear that if there's one thing our files have in common, it seems to be that we... don't have any one thing in common.
Awesome! Hopefully it's something simple that can get fixed relatively quickly.

Turned my volume up, I also have the phantom horse issue. I wonder if this is it and the people who don't have it just might not have noticed?
Edit: For the phantom horse thing, like someone else said, mounting and unmounting then resting prompted a party banter.

I'll turn mine up pretty loudly from hereon out during my long tedious evenings of playtesting.

I have the PC version and also have run into this bug. Roughly 60 hours into the game and have heard, at the extreme most, 20 banters but I'm fairly sure it was a bit less than that. It was after 'In Your Heart Shall Burn' that I noticed how silent my party had become. At first Varric and Solas were bantering at a pretty common pace... but it'd be a constant repeat about Varric's first encounter with Corypheus and after that one got repeated a good five times my party was struck dumb and I think I've heard maybe 10 unique banters since, which was about 40 hours ago.

The phantom horse thing would make sense if somehow the game thinks we are riding on the horse when we aren't.I don't think I have that bug but will listen for it tonight. I am hoping to play later this evening. I'll take out a new party--maybe Vivienne, Sera, and the Bull--have never taken the 3 of them out together before and will report my findings.
For additional info, playing on PS4, Deluxe physical disc edition, with an imported world state. I used a default Hawke.
Conversation also bugged out the first time I spoke with Dorian at Skyhold, conversations would freeze, had to press square to skip through it for it to continue.
I don't know if those who have the bug also had Dorian glitch as well?
Edit--as a side note i have about 50hours played so far and have gotten maybe--10-15? party banters?
Solas and Cole
Blackwall and Cole
Iron Bull and Cole
and about the other 7 with VarricxSolasxCass
Tried taking other party members out and (dorian, viv, sera, etc and ran all over Val Royeux and Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, and Hinterlands and nothing. Storm Coast seems to be the most "chatty" area.
Edit--as a side note I know my sister and friend who aren't on the forums, both on PS3 and they report their characters banter consistently.

I did too. PS4 Deluxe Physical as well... heh. I can't help but think of Dorian often in relation to all this because he's one of the companions who have not once said a single thing banter-wise with anyone in all my testing hours, too.

I didn't have the Dorian conversation bug and he has talked in my game, more than most except Cassandra. So nope, don't see a relation there. I also play with headphones and, honest to god, I haven't noticed any misplaced horse noises. But then again I have a PC deluxe version. Though what are the chances that we all have different reasons for it happening, or not happening as it were?

My wife and I are both having this issue, Xbox 360 Deluxe Edition with custom imports for both of us. I have also had the issue where some conversations glitch and won't proceed without being manually skipped ahead (the exact one Koffeegirl described in a prior post with Dorian and at least one other with Cassandra early on at Haven).

Just as a note, my "looking at it" is more on my own time to help collect information, but other people are also aware of it and will spend more time on it during their working hours, so to speak! (During the work day I have other stuff that I have to do, but I am usually able to talk and help collect information).
(Lest I get misattributed as the saviour of banters!)

Thanks for clarifying, man. Next time I'm in front of my laptop I'm planning on posting another update simply stating that we now know there will be/are some people investigating the issue, with David Hulegaard's statement on the Origin thread and Mark Darrah's twitter statement as references. So that'll help prevent you from being misrep'd, I suppose, O Reluctant Herald of Banterdraste!
