I've heard that the starting party of Cass/Varric/Solas has a lot of banter, but I've yet to see it outside of one banter.   I've attempted the following combinations so far:

Solas/Sera/Cass

Cass/Solas/Blackwall

Varric/Solas/Blackwall

Varric/Cass/Bull

Sera/Bull/Cass

Dorian/Bull/Cass

Dorian/Bull/Varric

Dorian/Blackwall/Cass

Dorian/Varric/Sera

Solas/Dorian/Vivenne

I haven't tried a combination with Cole yet, but that's because I just recruited him and I don't plan on using him much anyhow.  Since I tend to take Varric with me, three rogues is redundant.   ;)

Just wanted to add my voice in here. I don't think I've been as badly hit as others for I have had some banter, maybe 3 instances per area (which is still very little imo) with a average play time of maybe 5 hours for the smaller areas and 10 for the larger ones.

Indeed I have two complaints about companions in DA:I, even though I think they are well done. One is the banter amount, another is the amount they interact in quests directly. This was especially felt in the questline involving a certain warden and former protagonist where almost only Blackwall would indteract at all, but the case remained the same in many other quests, this was not as well done as in Dragon Age 2.

I can quite confirm that if you have Sera in your party, your companions will talk to her most. Without her, there seems to be no party banter ever.

Once, the moment I load up my game in my camp, Cassandra was 'apologizing' to Sera in the most akwarded manner ever and it is so hilarious how Sera shot her down.

I am loving Sera now and is probably going to make her my romance (after deciding on Cullen, then Iron Bull then Solas then back to Cullen, then Josehphine and now her!).

I am also now using Sera, Cole and Iron Bull and both Cole and Iron Bull have 'insulted' Sera (like Solas and Cassandra) and the one with Cole was especially hilarious.

I am now in Fallow Mire.

I've spent the evening on the lookout for phantom horses.

Which is not a sentence I think anyone is ever prepared to type.

Anyway, I haven't "encountered" any, as best as these ears of mine can tell anyway. But hey, it doesn't necessarily need to manifest in sound for everyone to be the culprit. That said, Natashina hasn't touched a horse with a six-foot pole and her banter timing still sounds off compared to what we've heard many other players enjoy.

I'll eventually get to the point whereby I'll try deleting my entire player profile off of the PS4, but I'm thinking that'd mean saying goodbye to Quinton Trevelyan indefinitely. That isn't something I'll be prepared to do for another couple of weeks, I don't think, so in the meantime don't worry, I'll continue to keep our thread aloft and apprised. I'll just need some help from anyone crazy enough to stick around with me. We gotta keep players informed and up-to-date... even if it takes a good long while for the devs to make heads or tails of the situation. :)

But for now, I've hit tonight's playtesting limit, I think. Got three more banters in five hours. Two at the Western Frontier, one at the Forbidden Oasis. I'm gonna eat dinner, play with my cat, and catch a Ralts in Pokemon. :P

I may or may not play tonight, I don't know.  If not, I'm got a FFIX playthrough that's just barely into Disc 2.  :)

Idk, I feel like no matter what party makeup, banter is really rare for me. I started a new character but same issue. I'm going to uninstall/reinstall tonight and see if that helps at all, but playing any more without banter is not really enticing. :(

@Natashina if your banter was working i'd highly recommend taking Cole for deeper insight into your comrades. But it's not :(

I plan on it.  I wouldn't miss banter between Solas/Vivienne/Cole for anything in the world.  I would take Cole with me for things like some of the side quests that I'm finishing up on the Storm Coast and in the Hinterlands.  Nothing that would require a tank though.  :P

I came here looking to see if there is supposed to be any ambient music while wandering around. I rarely hear any! That said, I now notice that there's very little banter. I'm about 14 hours in, and typically play about 1.5 hours daily. Over that entire time I've heard banter only a handful of times (I'm estimating one banter every other gaming session) with just a couple of sentences back and forth.

I'm on PS4 with Sera, Vivienne, and Iron Bull. I also have the problem where combat sounds will mute randomly, and I have to open up the options menu to get them back.

Wait, so some people who never rode a horse say they have fine banter?

Well, if that's true then I won't do that race in my next pt then, I never actually rode in my first pt besides that.

It may mysteriously work for you, so give anythinga shot you feel like giving a shot, but we have at least one regular contributor here who has tested not going near any mounts on a new file with no success as yet.

After my testing last night, the music loops about once every five minutes.  It lasts for about 90 seconds before fading back out.

I am playing on the PS4 and am about 40 hours into the game. I noticed that there was very little banter between my party, but I didn't think it was a bug until now. I noticed that party will have banter shortly after I fast travel to places, but won't have any more for a long time.

I have noticed that my sound mutes every once in a while. No sounds at all. Not sure if the problem is related or even due to the game, but I thought I would mention it as well since I noticed a few other people mentioning sound issues.

Ran around the Oasis for about an hour, got maybe four banters. Seems quite sparse.

I'll keep an ear out for phantom horses next time I'm on.

edit: something to consider. I recall on my 1st playthrough, Cassandra said something to Sera that seemed to be "part 2" of a banter that I'd never heard. If their interactions are episodic, and I caught episode two or three, that would suggest the banters are triggering, we just can't hear them.

It took me a good 20 hours to even get a mount, but I didn't hear any more banter before getting one than I did after. And I've started a new playthrough, I don't have mounts yet but no banter either.

I believe that is not true, ppl already tested by creating new chars which starts off with no mounts and still have the issue

I might as well, in case it helps.

That's defintely much more frequent than what I'm hearing!

It doesn't seem like it, because the ambient noise (the sounds walking, the wind, ect,) can largely drown it out.  I thought the same thing, until I was testing for banter last night.  If you just sit idle at a camp, you'll hear it.  I don't think the music plays enough for my liking either, but that's for a different thread.  I'm trying to keep this one on topic, since one is for the audio department (some of the music and sound stuttering) and this thread is for a programming/scripting issue (banter refusing to trigger.)

This does remind me of the one instance Varric and Dorian repeated the same banter over and over every 10 minutes or so, which was very out of place because it was very frequent and because they said the same thing.  Once it changed and they spoke, what I assume was, the second phase banter, but then it jumped back to them repeating the first part again. Maybe it's the phasing problem? Maybe we hear just the first (or whichever) part of the conversation and the rest doesn't trigger? A wild guess, but it was very strange what happened with Varric and Dorian dialogue.

It just seems like the game "realized" it was bugging out and instead of the banter magically fixing, it just kept repeating the same thing in a normal time frame: every 10-15 minutes or so.

While my characters almost never speak to each other out in the field (probably like one conversation every ~2 hours), Varric and Cassandra seemed to speak a lot more than anyone else. I didn't use Cassandra in my party for a large portion of the game, but when I switched her back in briefly, she and Varric had three conversations in less than 15 or 20 minutes. Kind of a bummer, since I'm trying to switch around characters a lot to learn more about them, but they're almost entire silent :(

Edit: I'm on PC, just to clarify. Also, I am having some sound muting, usually only right after entering an area. If I'm jumping or sliding down something, the sound effects sometimes come a few seconds after the actions. I have also noticed that there is almost never any music playing, though I'm not sure if this is a bug or an intended decision.

From what I've experienced, fast travelling through camps seems to help trigger banter. I fast travel a lot and get banter

Re: "silent" banter triggering; that is worth pondering. I got my first ever Cole banter as part of those three total I found in all of tonight's playtesting, and it was with Varric, and it sounded very much like a sequel to a previous exchange.

If they're firing but a lot of us simply can't hear them then that would tie in with all the general audio hitches too.

That said, it'd be really odd for them to fire silently and without the little speech indicator UI things that happen next to the character icons when banter occurs. I have kept tabs on that as best I sanely can and haven't seen any of that yet.
