Re: "silent" banter triggering; that is worth pondering. I got my first ever Cole banter as part of those three total I found in all of tonight's playtesting, and it was with Varric, and it sounded very much like a sequel to a previous exchange.
If they're firing but a lot of us simply can't hear them then that would tie in with all the general audio hitches too.
That said, it'd be really odd for them to fire silently and without the little speech indicator UI things that happen next to the character icons when banter occurs. I have kept tabs on that as best I sanely can and haven't seen any of that yet.

That would be a game breaking glitch in my opinion. It would be one thing for Bioware to fix the banter glitch, but if banter has been firing all along and we just haven't heard it or received any notification for it, it's not like Bioware can retroactively reset those specific character's banter back to zero... Which means we have potentially missed out on a lot of conversations. That's not acceptable in my opinion and it has a hugely negative impact on my gaming experience. :(

Hey I'm just adding to this as it seems important.

Before getting Skyhold I got literally no banter. I could wander around for hours with no talking. I only heard 1 exchange. The only other times people would talk would be near certain quest objectives/camps/artifacts.

After getting Skyhold the banter has definitely upped in frequency but it is still very rare. Maybe once every 45 minutes at the most.

I do a variety of party members and I go to a lot of different areas. My most frequent party is Iron Bull/Solas/Cole or Varric

Hope it gets fixed in time for my second playthrough ;)

One thing I'm really enjoying about this thread is that most of us are really enjoying the game otherwise.  I've run into a few issues (a pathing bug that almost got me killed, the voice-swap bug after you meet a certain character,) but overall this has been worth the money.   No bashing here, just a desire to see the game reach more of it's full potential.   ;)

I'm with you, Aeyl.  I hope that they can get this fixed by the time I'm ready for my second playthrough.  My most frequent party so far is Blackwall/Dorian/Varric.

I just thought of something: How many of you guys are using the "default" voice for your characters?  For instance, I didn't like the American voice on my dwarf (which is that race's default voice) because she sounds too much like Branka, so I use the British one instead.   I'm wondering if there could be a possible connection. What about everyone else?

And there goes another theory.

I'm using the default British Female voice for Lavellan.

I hope that's not the problem, since there's also a bug about choosing the non-default voice for the Inquisitor.

It's like the only way around both bugs would be to silence the Inquisitor.

The ultimate irony.

If you're talking about the quest From the Ashes (trying to avoid too many spoilers,) then I ran into that too.  I had to reload in order to get "my" voice back.  When I started the quest again, I just left it as default and I didn't have any voice changing issues after that.

It's like the only way around both bugs would be to silence the Inquisitor.

The ultimate irony.

I know of at least one poster that would be thrilled if that happened.

From what I've experienced, fast travelling through camps seems to help trigger banter. I fast travel a lot and get banter

I'll make a test of that tomorrow then.

I'm about 50 hours into the game (have not reached Skyhold) and have been doing every side-quest I have came across...there is very little party banter (infact it's only between Varric and Vivienne ) before that there was literally no party banter at all and I thought it was oddly quiet but I didn't think it was a bug...now that I'm seeing this thread I realized this has been happening to me.

Well, I spent all evening questing around Hinterlands and Sword Coast on my second character and all I got were two banter events between Cass and Varric after entering the Hinterlands for the first time. :( It sucked before, but now that I know that this is a bug and I'm missing content because of it, it's really affected my enjoyment of this game. I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling the game tomorrow, and if that doesn't yield any results then I'm going to shelve it for now and keep an eye on this thread in the meantime.

I think the people wondering if there's "silent" banter going on are onto something-- the one convo I heard between Vivienne and Solas was pretty clearly not their first conversation by context. I really love the game but I can't bring myself to play more until this is fixed, it's just too depressing!

Since I posted in this thread, I have been getting more and more banter. I think it's a time thing, because I stayed in the same spot for like 30 minute and had like three banters.

Playing on the PC, and it seems like I don't get any of the "Random" type banter.

On a few occasion, NPC's in the party have talked about ongoing quests, but other than that, barely anything

Tried that last night.  I had one banter in thirty minutes at a camp.  I stood completely still, only moved my mouse cursor from one side of the screen to the other.  Didn't open my inventory or any menu.  I sat there and I kept a very close eye on my clock.

I had also tried quick traveling between camps as well.  No go.   :(

I played 80 hours at pc now and yes, they are not speak...

Well, sometime they do, but even in da2 it happen much more often. Almost time it just silence. They can only tell some if we enter somewhere like cave, but not those much. And yeah, if i stay one place a lot of time they might start speak, but not often do this too, can all time stay silence too. If i walking around map they will chat 2-3time for all the map and if i fast travel, they can say one more dialogue...

My party usual are Cassandra/Cole/Dorian/Varric/Solas.

I've not had much in the way of party banter either and I've had no interactive banter opportunities at all.  I don't know how normal this is, it's hard to say when my only experience of the game is this playthrough but it seems odd and very sparse.

I've played through Haven, the HInterlands, the Stormcoast and have been in Skyhold.  My counter is clocking in at 92 hours but admittedly I leave the game open in the background a lot, so that number is inflated compared to the amount of time I've actively been playing the game.  Interesting I also have the sound cut out after using pause and it only starts up again after pausing and then unpausing again without performing another action.  I noticed earlier in the thread that someone mentioned their sound wasn't working in places and I wonder if this is somehow related?

I hope, if this is a bug we see a resolution to it quickly because party banter is one of my favourite elements of the DA series and it's currently a little lonely exploring the world.   :)

Yea it was really weird, because I wasn't expecting it. I was cleaning my room up, and Vivi and Cole started talking. They were very short.

Sign me up as another person experiencing this issue. My party members banter once or twice a map.

Interesting.

Mike Laidlaw's twitter page indicated. that you needed to go back to Haven then go back to the Hinterlands, to start the banter. Of course, then, my early party of CASS, SOLAS and VARRIC suffered a mute syndrome as well.  However, once I executed that tip,  problem solved.

Seems like, in the early phase of the game, the TRIGGER is to go: Haven->HINTERLAND->Haven then back to the HINTERLANDS.

Um okay. I must admit I remember having more frequent banter the first time I went there with Just Cass, Varric and Solas.

For some reason it comes to my mind that when I swtiched my party around the first time I was in the Emerald graves I seemed to get more banter.

I had started out traveling with Blackwall, Sera and Solas and then changed it to Blackwall, Dorian Cole. Dorian and Cole talked quite a bit 3 or 4 times maybe and Blackwall/Cole once.

Maybe changing party once you traveled somewhere helps?

I can try that on a test character, but I take it those characters that can't go back to Haven are out of luck?

I noticed that party will have banter shortly after I fast travel to places, but won't have any more for a long time.

I noticed that too.
