Interesting.

Mike Laidlaw's twitter page indicated. that you needed to go back to Haven then go back to the Hinterlands, to start the banter. Of course, then, my early party of CASS, SOLAS and VARRIC suffered a mute syndrome as well.  However, once I executed that tip,  problem solved.

Seems like, in the early phase of the game, the TRIGGER is to go: Haven->HINTERLAND->Haven then back to the HINTERLANDS.

Does this fix it permanently?

I don't really understand. At the beginning of the game you have to travel between Haven and Hinterlands multiple times anyway?

Well I just tried that travel combo and got three banters in like five minutes with Varric, Cass and Solas. So, hopeful? Possibly a coincidence? We'll see! I'm sure I've traveled in that combination before, but maybe doing it in quick succession triggers something?

That doesn't really help with those of us who have gotten way, wayyyy past that point. Travelling to Skyhold and back doesn't solve anything. And what if it stops again, do you just repeat the travel? Doesn't seem like much of a fix. :/

I've been having the same issue. I seemed to get a decent amount of banter at the beginning of the game, but then eventually it slowed down to barely getting any. I thought it was because I was using the same party members, but switching it up still got me nothing.

After reading about "phantom horses" I also fast traveled to a camp, called my horse, dismounted, then continued on foot. Been getting a banter every 10 or so minutes for nearly an hour (in Emprise du Lion with Cole/Solas/Blackwall... got barely any banter at all in that area before trying). Not sure if that's "often" compared to people who don't have the issue, but it's definitely better than going hours without getting one. Either the bug worked itself out on its own (at least temporarily) or horses were the issue for me. I'll see if my luck continues, or if this continues to fix it for me if it comes up again.

Popping in to say I completed the game (leaving a lot of side quests undone) at 60 hours with maybe 1 or 2 banter per zone.  Certainly not 1 every 10 minutes.

PC, North America, and did the digital preload on the 17th.  Male human mage Inquisitor, using British voice, if any of that matters.

I definitely have the same issue as well. PC version. Did travel between Haven and Hinterland several times. Varric bantered somewhat with Cass. Then switch party, and Bull and Sera talked with Dorian maybe 5 times combined. Now doing Oasis, and Blackwall, Dorian, and Varric have nothing to say to one another. They still comment on environment.

I hope this is patched. The banter is what made the party feel alive rather than auto follow AIs.

I pre-loaded the digital deluxe version for PC (Win7 ult) and I too am having this issue. No amount of fast traveling, party swapping, or mount fiddling seems to trigger party banter.

Apparently I'm having this issue as well. I wouldn't say my situations as bad as some people's but I'm certainly not getting a whole lot of banter. Though they're always quick to complain when we're going up a hill.

I'm playing on PS4 (PSN download) and having this issue as well. Of course, I didn't realize it WAS an issue -- I just thought the game had much less banter than previous instalments. I hear banter maybe once or twice per zone, and usually only if Cole is in my party.

This really sucks. I'm ~40 hours into my first playthrough and now I feel like I should restart because I've missed so much content,

Could you provide a link to that specific tweet?  I checked out his twitter page and I don't see this advice...

I tried fast traveling/reloading a few times, until I can hear a party banter right after the loading is complete. Then I started running around killing random stuff, and there would be 1 banter/10 mins for about 3-4 banters. Horse makes no difference. Tested three times, same result. Doesn't tell much...I'll do more testing tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure "going back to Haven" is not the solution, at least for me, because I did go back to Haven before continuing my exploration in the Hinterlands. And my companions were silent in some other areas as well, like Storm Coast.

I might have this issue too? Though it seems to me that I get a little more banter than others. I mix around my party a bit and usually get 1-3 banters per zone. Generally when I'm walking in and out of camps. Considering I spend hours within each, it seems a bit sparse. I'm not sure if what I get is the norm, or a bug.

Cassandra talks a lot more than others. I've heard Dorian and the Bull are supposed to talk quite a lot, even flirt, but they're dead silent when they're with me. It almost feels awkward. All that tension.

It seems it primarily effects people using PS4.  ^_^

WOA ok guys I don't know if this is a fluke and I'm scared it will never happen again, but I literally just got 6 banters in one hour and a half. SIX.

Here's all I did:

I was in the Hissing Wastes, with Solas, Blackwall, and Dorian.Got banters for Solas-Dorian, Dorian-Blackwall, and Blackwall-Solas, including a romance specific one and obvious story progression specific ones.

I mounted a horse, dismounted, and rested in the tent. I did the "setting up camps" mission, so every area I went was new. Every time I set up camp, I rested in it.

I don't know if that will help any of you, or if this will be repeatable....but man. It is night and day how it feels when they actually talk. I know how all three feel about each other now, for example, and an idea of the conflicts they have with each other. It's blowing my mind.

It'd be great to have other people corroborate this.

It's very bizarre because I used a save game of someone who had this issue on my machine and did get banters just fine, so it's a very puzzling issue indeed.

oh wow, I thought this might be a bug but I wasn't sure.  I'm on PC, and ended up downloading the game off Origin on the 18th because the discs that came with my Inquisitor's Edition wouldn't actually install (I kept getting some error).  I get more banter at the war table than I ever have outside with my companions.  I finished a 90+ hour game and probably got one banter per zone, if I got any at all.  I switched up companions many times, and explored all over the place.

getting the same thing in my new playthrough.  kinda wondering now if I should re-try installing the game with my discs and see if that fixes it, since glancing over this thread it seems to be pretty random what people get to fix the problem :/

One thing I'm 80% sure is it's not related to a corrupted save, because I either had normal frequency banter or complete silence.

Same here... I have a save where I have spent ~90 hours with my mage. I've heard about 1-2 banters per zone after spending multiple hours in zone, and switching out party members constantly. Same goes for background music. I hear bard music, but rarely hear anything else, sometimes background music will trigger and immediately disappear. I tried restarting the game with a new character, and I am still having the issue, so it isn't worth sacrificing the save I've spent so much time on.

I will also add that I have never seen "interactive banter" that people are talking about. Nothing has ever popped up. I'm I am lucky enough to get any banter, it is where story missions are present. That is it.

(PC, Regular Version, Preloaded on the 17th.)

It does seem like camps/horses can sometimes fix the problem. Like I mentioned in my last post, I was getting 1 banter every 10 minutes after traveling to a camp in Emprise du Lion and mounting/dismounting my house. I went back to Skyhold, then moved to a camp in Emerald Graves with Cassandra/Varric/Solas. No banter. Changed the party back to Cole/Solas/Blackwall. Still no banter. I tried calling the horse and dismounting several times both in camps and while walking around... still nothing for nearly 40 minutes. Then I decided to fast travel to a camp again and a banter triggered on arrival. Waited in camp and 2 triggered in 10 minutes this time. I'll see if this continues next time I load my game.

Birarre indeed.  Challenge with this bug is that it's difficult to know when you have resolved it, and whether it's resolved completely or will crop up again later after shooting off a few banter triggers.  Makes it doubly hard to troubleshoot and diagnose.  Sympathies.

I'll try both the quick travel haven - hinterlands - haven - hinterlands as well as the mount, dismount, rest potential solutions and come back on whether that dislodges anything.  However, it really doesn't seem to have a pattern to it.  At least the gender bending bug we could test out and know immediately when it was solved.

If there is any data the Dev/QA team needs from folks experiencing the issue, just say the word, would be happy to share.

Yeah, that doesn't seem to be QUITE the same issue, though who knows, given the size of this thing a number of these issues may be linked *shrug*
