I think I may be having this issue (playing on PC). I'm at about 20 hours (have not yet been to Skyhold), and I would say I've had about 10 banters. I have used all of the party members I've found for at least a little while. The banter does feel very infrequent. I am still able to hear my companions comment on things like 'this is a good place to setup camp' or 'we should look around here'.

I have not yet tried sitting idle with my companions.

I occasionally ride a mount, but usually I'm just walking from one map marker to the next. I have been exploring various areas (Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Haven, and ? Oasis).

Ok, so now I'm 100% certain that there was no humanoid character anywhere near my party that could have been responsible for the voice.  There was in the vacinity 4 bears and 2 dogs.  There's something on the reply function that says my media - do you think I could use that to post the video?

It's a bug? What a relief! I thought they just didn't write very much party banter and that some characters just wont talk to each other at all :(

Okay, I've spent the last hour or so testing this.  Going to the camps (that I had already unlocked) and resting dismounting worked earlier, which was my test of the mount trick.  I logged off for a bit to share my results with you guys.

I decided to do some more testing on the same character.  This is gonna be as time stamped as possible.

First, I'm doing all of this on my main character.  She's just gotten to Skyhold, and I was doing this in camps I had already unlocked in the Hinterlands.

11:35pm: Logged in, messed around a bit.  Stocked up on some herbs, killed a few enemies.

11:41pm: Quick traveled back to the Redcliffe Farm Camp, did not rest and then waited.

11:52pm: Picked some herbs very close by, went idle again

11:54pm: Quick traveled back to camp, rested

11:58pm: Comment by the Bull, the first he has made in the game!

12:06am: Ran back on foot (no QT) to camp, mounted, rested.

12:20am: Quick traveled back to the camp, mounted rested

12:21am: Went idle

12:29am: Comment by Blackwall

12:30am: Paused to start heating food for dinner.   :P

12:31am: Unpaused and continued watching the game while food was heating up

12:36am: Dorian and the Bull have fairly civil dialogue.

Exited the game after that because I'm starving and I want to eat dinner.  Just wanted to let you guys know of my results after testing for about an hour.   :)

Ironically, this is the first Bioware game where I've really been too busy to worry about side banter. I have an Inquisition to run and refugees to feed. I also have to try to keep myself and everyone else alive with only 8 healing potions. Whether or not the crew is bonding as I run around picking and plucking elfroot and iron seems so unimportant these days. Maybe it will matter more to me in another 20 or 40 hours.

I've got 14 hours into the game, on my first character.   I spent most of that time backtracking through the Hinterlands.   This is far from a character that's seen 20-40 hours.  :P

Now, I'd heard that this game had had more companion banter than the previous installments.  I noticed that it was very very quiet, with almost no talking, and I was wondering what I hadn't done to trigger any sort of banter.  Turns out, I did nothing wrong and there is some sort of weird bug.

1)  post midnight dinner - NICE!  :o

2)  Wonder if we need to keep mounting / dismounting / resting to keep the banter going...

Alright, I don't want to jinx myself, but I'm feeling good about the potential "fixes" that have been posted in this thread.  I've tried them all, so not sure what exactly has caused this improvement (I would be a poor QA tester...), but here's what I've tried:

1. Fast traveled from Haven to Hinterlands to Haven to Hinterlands.  There was banter almost immediately after that.  I wandered around the Hinterlands for a while and got 2-3 new conversations.

2. Mounted and dismounted horse upon arrival after traveling or fast traveling.  Also rested after fast traveling or when arriving at a camp.

3. Explored new area in this playthrough (Storm Coast).  However, banter doesn't seem to happen less when backtracking or idling.

I've been wandering around the storm coast playing normally for about an hour and a half and have gotten banters every 3-10 minutes from Solas, Varric and Cassandra! Finally they are not voiceless automatons! It improves the game a LOT. Right now I've switched out my party for Vivienne, Bull and Blackwall and have gotten 2 banters in about 15 minutes of idling. Fingers crossed that this lasts once I leave the storm coast.  This seems like a really finicky bug so I'm not convinced it won't return.  Curious to see if these things improve the banter rate for anyone else or if anyone else can narrow it down.

As for the creepy voices, are they the whispery things from the skulls / shards?

The creepy whispers do come from those shards as well as from the skulls.  I've used that sound in order to figure out where the shard was exactly.   :P

If you want a really bizzare experience, I had banter between Varric and Blackwall go off while looking through one of the skulls.  Everything had this creepy distorted echo.

Well, these are my normal hours.  When this is your usual shift, it's not out of the ordinary.  It's snowing out, so I had a pot pie.

As far as your other point, I'm wondering the same as well.  To be honest, if I have to quick travel, mount/dismount and rest to get the banter to trigger after loading a game, it's a small price to pay.   For new characters, I might have to go for the mount as soon as possible, and then do it from there.   :)

I did the "Repair game" via Origin that some people have mentioned. I had a few more conversations last night night after that. Only had time to play for a few hours, but it felt like I got some more banter, at least.

so after walking around the hissing wastes for about a half hour in complete silence, I fast traveled to one of my unlocked camps, mounted and then dismounted and rested, and about a minute after that sera and dorian started talking

I'm hopeful...?  x.x  kinda sucks if that's temporary though.  buuut I'll update if it holds up.

Is all, or just one of those things that fixes it? It could just be fast travel.

That was a part of my testing (which included fast travel with and without resting) and it was only by fast travel, mounting/dismounting and resting did the banter start happening with any consistency.  This fix seems to go away if you quit and then continue, so FT, mount/dismount, rest and it should come back.

Throwing my forlorn 'I believe I have this bug as well' hat into the ring. I can spend hours running around and questing without hearing any party dialogue. I sometimes hear one every few hours. I've been switching around my party in an attempt to get them to talk to each other since my boyfriend and brother said that their party banters much more often. At first I just figured bioware had dialed down the banter for some odd reason, but apparently (thankfully) not.

Please get a fix out!

All right, I just tried testing out the mount/dismount/rest approach to the problem.

First, I tested it out in the Hinterlands, doing what Natashina did and going around every camp and mounting/dismounting/resting. I noticed something sorta weird - every other camp I visited, when I first whistled for the horse, nothing arrived. If I whistled again, it would show up, but other times, the first whistle would do the trick. Does that happen usually? I've only used mounts one instance before this (ironically, because I didn't want to miss any banter in the game). I had a couple characters make location-specific comments (not banter, though) in this span of about ten minutes, but I reloaded for another session (I checked the thread and noticed that it wasn't necessary to go through all the camps).

This time, I went to the Exalted Plains, an area I had mostly cleared (I'll try a new area like veeia did another time). I mounted, dismounted, rested, and then started criss-crossing the plains for the next hour and twenty minutes. Here's what happened:

1. At four minutes, Dorian and Sera bantered.

2. At twenty minutes, Dorian and Varric bantered.

3. At twenty three, Dorian and Sera bantered again (that was quite hilarious - Dorian asked Sera where she got all her arrows from, as she's got hundreds, and Sera told him from up his ar*e, to which he said it should open a shop if it's so prolific)

4. At twenty eight minutes, Sera and Dorian bantered again (I've never had these two talk so much).

5. And that was it. I was super pleasantly surprised to have four (four!) banters in less than an hour, but the next hour was silent. I tried fast-traveling to another two camps, wherein I repeated the procedure and then walked around again in each instance. Nothing triggered.

I dunno if this helped much. There might be a correlation. I'll try testing more tomorrow. This bug has put my playthrough on halt because I feel like I've missed so much character development, so I'm glad it's an issue being investigated now.

How long does it last? And does it go away if you load a different save? Or if you travel to a different location?

Been in Crestwood for about 3 hours now, got about 4 banters with Blackwall Cole and Solas.

I thought my game was awfully silent for long stretches, but I thought it was just a matter of a small amount of content spread over many areas. In the prologue, my party members were fairly chatty but that stopped as soon as reached the Hinterlands. There was some companion interaction, but all in all it was very rare. Good to hear it's a bug.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd be curious to know if it started back up again with the work around.  It's possible that something (maybe even related to the banters) can possibly interfere with future banters playing even though they were working.  There might also just be a bizarre cadence due to some random distribution (though an hour seems a bit long).

It seems to last for as long as I'm playing.  It goes away if I exit out of the game, that I've determined.  I haven't tried a different save or a different location yet.  I don't have another character with a mount, and those have the bug/glitch as of last night.

@Seaside I had the same thing happen to me when I would call my mount as well. Sometimes they wouldn't even show up after calling them until after I rested.

Xbox one user with the bug and the camp/horse trick worked for me but with an already unlocked one in Crestwood and Sera, Bull and Dorian in my party. I tried it and immediately got dialogue between Bull and Sera. (It being the mayhem one made it even sweeter.)

Also, now that Seaside mentioned it, I noticed that my mounts do the same thing too.

It wasn't until tonight that I found out that Dorian and the Bull get along better than I would have guessed.  And that Blackwall and Dorian really dislike each other.

This is my last bit of testing for the night.  I'm going to start a new character, then try the Haven to Hinterlands and back trick, so I don't have to go for a mount before I can get banter.  :)
