I've never had any banter in Val Royeux no matter how hard I've tried, nope. But some people have reported there's plenty. So I'm guessing it's in the coding somewhere.

Welp, I uninstalled/reinstalled. Tried warping to camps, mounting/dismounting, resting... nothing is working for me. :( They're all standing there looking pretty but not saying anything. (Cole, Bull, and Dorian. And I *know* I haven't gotten all of Dorian and Bull's dialogue since they haven't mentioned any of their, uh, extra-curricular activities at all.)

This is in the Hissing Wastes. I entered battle, and everybody is still silent as always. *sigh sigh sigh*

EDIT: (11:05 am) Well, I got one banter since I started like forty minutes ago.

(11:09) OMG another banter? I just hope this sticks....

(11:38) Cole commented on the stars and Dorian responded. Not sure if this is actual banter or environment specific -- I was standing still when the conversation started.

(11:50) Banter between Bull and Cole, hurray. After I established a new camp.

(11:58) Yay, Banter between Bull and Dorian. This seems to be like a normalish amount now?

(12:21) Closed a few rifts, fast traveled, and got a Cole/Bull banter.

I'm getting a bit tired (long night) so I'll stop making notes now. This is definitely an abnormal amount of banter for me though.

I seemed to notice when you first go to the hinterlands it was fine just seems to have got worse somehow as time progressed

I think I have this problem sometimes, with some companions in some regions. I've been able to get party banter and even one or two instances of banter that I can participate in, but there are definitely long stretches of silence in some places (not to mention the audio-cutting-out bug). A few people have mentioned a systematic way we can test to see if it is happening in-game (and if it would be helpful to do it); Can that be put in the first post or something?

Well, I'm glad to see that it's a known issue.  I thought it was weird that I wasn't getting much talking going on.  Nearly 40 hours in...I think I'm just going to start over-I feel like I was rushing through things anyway.

But...yeah.  The party banter is one of the best things about these games-I don't want to play without it.

This morning's playtesting, continued:

10:12 AM

Yeah, nothing. Gonna warp around a few camps. Mount/unmount/rest.

10:22 AM

Did that. Still nada. I'm thinking, though, that my results might be skewed if Varric/IB/Dorian don't generally have much in the way of exchanges. But this is the test bed I've made for myself, so I will continue for my allotted time period with it.

10:33 AM

Silent as the grave. I've started gathering herbs and ore. Because... herbs and ore. Heh. Sounds like "herbivore." Heh. Heh. Goddammitpartymemberstalkyouaredrivingmeinsane.

10:44 AM

Varric and Dorian had an exchange. So that's roughly 78 minutes of waiting, which is obviously well below the norm (but fairly normal for me...) but it happened. To note, I believe this is the first time in all my combined play I've ever heard Dorian engage in a banter.

Messed around, did some shard missions, killed some dragons and in all these hours, I got only 2 banters. :/ The stuff we miss...

I hope they manage to fix it so i can play the game again for the 2nd time.

While I would rather see no one had to deal with this bug, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one. It's even more of a comfort to see others are putting such effort into trying to figure out the cause and/or workaround.

Did some more testing. Tried some things while playing several (3-4) hours this afternoon;

- Playing with and without an internet connection.

- Traveling between several areas without returning to Haven.

- Traveling between several areas, returning to Haven each time before doing so.

- Unlocking a new area altogether and venturing forth in.

- Changing party members 'regularly', switching up the entire party every 20 minutes in the last hour.

Only by unlocking an entirely new area was I able to trigger some party banter, although it only occurred twice over the course of an hour. Internet connection was off, I had switched the party after fast traveling to a camp. One of those might have been a scripted reaction to the environment.

Besides that there was a clearly scripted reaction to the environment/action I took later on. The rest was silence....

It happened to me too. Weird thing is, there seems some sort of line in-game which allows party banter. Happened to me in the Hinterlands. You've got a river and near to it a rift. I crossed the river from the nearest camp and at the other side, the party would talk with each other. I crossed it a few times and every time they talked. For the rest it's pretty quiet.

Interesting. Could it be that they accidentally flagged some banters to be location-based, at least under a certain condition?

Same problem here, playing on the PC (digital deluxe edition). My first playthrough was 70+ hours, and I only got like 5 party banters. I'm on my second now and almost nothing.

Did he mention how long did he test this? Many players here can get normal banter sometimes, just very rare, like 6 within an hour then nothing for hours.

I did *not* test for very long, it's true.  Mostly because people were "nothing is happening for me" so having it happen once or twice was different.  But you're right that waiting longer may have garnered results that showed it breaking.

I can't help thinking that this bug is connected to the weird audio lags in general, including the pausing during cutscenes that means you have to press skip to get to the next bit of dialogue. I'm in the the Western Approach at the moment and just had to shut the console down because the pause thing happened but pressing skip didn't work this time. It's almost like these bugs are getting worse the further into the game you get, which sucks because like others I feel like I'm missing huge slices of content.

ETA: I've played the same cutscene again and it's stuck, again...but after letting it idle for a minute or so it unstuck itself :/

11:02 AM

Decided to warp back to Skyhold with my last half hour of test time. War drums again... and the environment loaded piece by piece. Huh. Well, c'est la Quisivie.

11:04 AM

From the war table, I entered the Storm Coast with Varric, Sera, and Cole. Quickly I mounted/unmounted/rested. Gathered some materials nearby, then stood silently.

11:07 AM

Sera and Cole have their first interaction. Well, that's promising enough. It's worth noting that I haven't exited the game, only warped from The Western Approach to Skyhold to the Storm Coast. So that's neat. I think I'll stand here until 11:30...

11:12 AM

Varric and Sera bantered. Whoa. Legitimately in disbelief: first time in 60 hours I've had two banters fire off inside of half an hour (normally closer to two hours without a single trigger). I didn't have much luck at all at the Frontier with Varric/IB/Dorian, so maybe it's regional, but I'm beginning to sense a correlation. You horse lot may be hoofing it in the right direction.

11:13 AM

Varric and Sera. Again. O_O You horse lot are PROBABLY hoofing it in the right direction. Worth noting though that historically my file has always favored the Storm Coast above other regions for this. I'm still thinking roughly 60% of all banter I have ever heard has been here despite all the testing. Related: the music is frequent, SFX function correctly, et al. Perhaps regional audio glitches are interacting with mount/banter misalignments to paint so blurry an image for us? Because many of us are reporting such wildly inconsistent party composition/regional location success/failure rates... gets me thinking.

11:33 AM

Stood still for 20 minutes but didn't trigger any further banters. That isn't so bad, of course, although it still goes against how chatty many other players have mentioned their companions as being (I noticed in the Origin thread, for example, that someone reporting the bug claimed a friend came over and noted that their party was much chattier by comparison after watching the bug-afflicted player wander around for 20-30 minutes with very little dialogue).

I'm actually going to leave the file running another test hour without controller input while I prepare lunch and write a paper on linguistics (is that ironic? I feel like labeling it ironic) because I'm curious whether or not the banter I triggered is all I'm going to receive on this particular camp-hop/mount/unmount/region/composition/file bootup/whatever the factor(s).

This isn't going to get fixed any time soon, is it?

*sigh*

I have the game sitting there on my desktop, constantly tempting me, but I just can't play it while knowing that I'm missing so much because of a damned bug.

I'm wondering if that's the case too. The hissing wastes actually has really nice music.... when it actually plays. But I've started just standing still whenever I can actually hear music, and it doesn't seem to cause banters more often.

So a big part of the game is broken and no fix is coming? Great, I wanted to play this game sometime in the next month or so... /sigh

Played for about 2 hours in the Exalted Plains last night with a party of Dorian, Sera, and Iron Bull. Nada, zilch, nothing for banter. I got a one liner for Dorian related to a quest-- (investigate the ramparts) but that was it. Whether at camp of standing still, nothing. I'll play some more today and post my results. I also don't think I have the phantom horse bug, I didn't use the mount at all.

So without the bug - does banter build on itself, and progress over time? Or is it story driven? I'm wondering if it's "safe" to go on a herb/material gathering spree and not do the story missions.

My fear is that the game "thinks" banter is ongoing/progressing and by spending time in the game (simply wandering) I'm missing stuff that I won't get back once it's fixed.

When you head back into the fray, try warping between camps. Once you're at a camp quickly mount/dismount and then rest. Document your experiences after having done so. Just a suggestion of course, but that's something a few of us have been working with -- it seems to produce a limited-time measure of success, meaning it could be part of the key to unlocking the mystery.

I definitely will try this now. Did you stay in camp standing still  for a while after resting or did you go off questing?
