By the way :

- I play on Hard

- I have all subtitles on (so I would't have missed "written" dialogue if for some reason audio would fail, like it something happen for the bards

- I have run with various setups, including but not limited to using 2 warriors (though I mostly use 2 mages, rarely if never 2 rogues)

- I didn't use the default world state, but a dragon age keep import (maybe it is the common denominator ? I haven't seen much mention of this)

Yeah, can confirm I never would have known there was combat dialogue amongst the cast if other people hadn't mentioned it. I don't think I've ever gotten any aside from Sera's recruitment.

Goodness.

Anyway, thanks for continuing to log results, everybody. With any luck (read: all of the luck) the devs will figure it out soonish. :P

Combat dialogue? What kind of combat dialogue? They actually converse mid fight? Or do you just mean the yells they make when someone gets KO'd?

How exactly did you alter dynamic range ? I have tried to fiddle with this option, but it doesn't give me more banter.

For me: options - audio - 5th down is dynamic range (on ps4) there are options for night, headphones, TV, Stereo etc. I found Switching between TV and night to give banter.

I've had more banter this evening than I have the entire playthrough. It has been marvellous!! Everyone needs to try this to see if it's just a random coincidence for me or if it'll actually help a lot of people get banter.

I had switched audio options once before. I'm going to try this now with a new character + one of my old saves and see how it goes.

I have found a good general fix for this problem. I believe the frequency of the banter is based on your setup. What I mean is the game expects your party to be as follows: Rogue, Mage, 2 warriors. I barely got any banter before, but when I changed the setup to the "expected setup" (I.E. I'm a mage, I took varric cassandra and blackwall). Banter immediately started and has been very frequent since. So try using the meta setup if you havent already, because I believe the script for the banter is expecting this and doesnt initialize properly when you have something like 2 mages or 2 rogues.

so remember: 1. 2 handed warrior 2. Shield and sword warrior 3. Rogue 4. Mage

hope this helps.

Unfortunately, I've been running non-stop with the above optimal party set-up from the very beginning of the game - 33hrs - with no luck. Tried mixing it up (two mages, rogue) last time I played, and it didn't work either. I so wish it would, though!

I'm baffled as to why I can't get the horse/resting trick to work. "Hey, fellow party members, I'm on a horse! Now I am not! Let's all had a nice nap! Can we talk about it, please? Please? Anyone, anyone? Vivienne? Bueller?"

When people are resting at camp, are you waiting for your mounts to disappear, or resting while the mounts are still there? I've tried both ways, and it doesn't seem to help. I've also had my mount still be there after resting, are they supposed to disappear or stay? (I think I've had it both ways?) Is there any correlation with the mounts people are using?

It seems like changing dynamic range pushes an autosave, at least  for me on ps4-- maybe that's doing something?

Try altering audio guys (altering dynamic range mode works for me) It's working quite well for me. Not perfect but I've got stuff every ten mins or so here. Also moving camps and stuff seems to trigger some stuff. This has been on my post game save though. With Dorian, Bull and Sera at the coast. I am having a blast! We've really missed out on so much stuff! I have Bull flirting with Dorian and it is glorious!

Didn't work :(

I feel like we're doing this blind without being able to see the actual scripts involved. I hope there's a better way for Bioware's QA testers to home in on this issue.

Bioware NEVER should have added bloody mounts. I remain convinced the bugs are a direct result of the inclusion of mounts in the game. Somehow party banter is disabled while riding a mount and for a lot of us our playthroughs are ruined because the game doesn't register that we're on foot. At least, that's the only logical explanation I can think of...

That can't be true, because we still get banters, just at incredibly reduced rates.

Hmm but maybe the game thinks we're riding a mount for a long period of time and then randomly realizes "oh wait! They've been walking for the past hour... Better give em a banter!"?

I'm not a video game developer, so I'm just looking for something convenient to blame :P
I hope they fix it soon, though... I miss my banter :(

My friend just finished his game with 50 hours and didn't encounter this issue. He used his mount all the time.

I'm on a PC, and I'll have to try this. Fingers crossed it works for me.

I get the occasional party banter, and no one but my PC really has any combat dialogue (she shouts "DIE!" a lot). Other than that, most companions address quest related things ("good place to camp" etc.) In the last hour in the hinterlands, Solas has been the only one that spoke and he said "This is a poor place for the mages and templars to wage their war." and that's it. Not even anyone agreeing or disagreeing with him. *sigh*

Keep waiting around. See if it improves. It works for me but I have no idea why, someone above mentioned auto save which could be true. It somehow resets something I guess and that gives me banter within about ten minutes of changing it. Tonight I've gone from Bull and Dorian saying hi for the first time all the way through to DORIAN seemingly considering what riding the bull would be like. Remarkable really. I will keep testing it though, as I said this is on my post game save.. I will try this with Solas, Varric and Cass some more back in the hinterlands on my second run which I just started tomorrow hopefully.

Off to bed now. Good luck my fellow bugees!

My dynamic range is set to Headphones. Are you saying I should change it to something else and then change it back?

Yeah I use headphones for dynamic range. I will try this tomorrow

By the way, all of the tricks with camps and horses mentioned in this threads have not been successful for me :/

Say mine was on stereo If I hadn't had banter for half an hour I would swap to Night or TV or something and then wait and see if that improved things. Often it did. Sometimes immediately sometimes five mins later or so. If it went dry again I would then switch to another audio range mode etc.

No idea if this is a 'fix' but I've had more luck with this than I have with the mount and rest thing. Worth a shot, ey?

Here was my latest: switching camps and changing audio worked super well for me. Haven't done mount and rest for a couple of hours but I'm getting more banter than ever.

11.00 Altered audio.
11.01 Dorian and Bull banter immediately triggered.
Altered audio at 11.15
Changed camp
11.17 banter with Sera and Bull
11.28 Changed camps to crestwood got Dorian and Bull banter about being conquered!
11.34 sera and bull banter
11.40 Bull and Dorian flirting banter
11.45 Dorian and sera banter about arrows
11.53 changed audio
11.54 sera and Dorian banter
11.59 Dorian and Sera banter

Could be a coincidence. But I've had good banter in two areas tonight by camp switching and altering audio.

Really am off to bed now though. Good luck my dears.

Have had a good few banters again today running around Exalted Plains, Crestwood and Western Approach. What I tend to do is when I enter the area, I immediately mount/dismount/rest, then go about my business as usual, mounting/dismounting every so often. Thanks to this trick, I am definitely experiencing more banter.

Edit: I will play around with altering the audio tomorrow.

Maybe someone from Bioware could give us a little insight on how the party banter scripting is supposed to work : what kind of logic is used ? what kind of flags are stored and where ? how are they tested and used ? how often ? could other game systems have an undesired impact because they use the same basic functions or store data the same way ? We are grasping at straws without that basic knowledge.

i just had a thought: is everyone here a chronic quick-save user? Since loading up autosaves seems to be fixing the bug for some people, it might have occurred because of the frequent use of quicksaves in the first place.

I never quicksaved even once. I just have three normal saves which I rotate.

I'm like Gill above, I have three normal saves that I rotate, too. I save every five minutes or so, because I'm mildly paranoid.

Wow! I'm so glad to realize this is a bug -- I'd gotten so bored with the silence that I started listening to music while running around the map. Hope this is fixed soon.

I hope too but I am pretty sad about all the banter I missed during my playthrough, I definitely won't be able to replay any time soon, feels like I missed half of character development and especially the atmosphere.
