Well, now I'm paralyzed by this. I love the game, yet with this potential bug I'm prepared to admit the side quests felt like slogs without any ruckus from companions.
I supposed I'm going to keep the game on ice 'till then.

Keep waiting around. See if it improves. It works for me but I have no idea why, someone above mentioned auto save which could be true. It somehow resets something I guess and that gives me banter within about ten minutes of changing it. Tonight I've gone from Bull and Dorian saying hi for the first time all the way through to DORIAN seemingly considering what riding the bull would be like. Remarkable really. I will keep testing it though, as I said this is on my post game save.. I will try this with Solas, Varric and Cass some more back in the hinterlands on my second run which I just started tomorrow hopefully.
Off to bed now. Good luck my fellow bugees!
Y'know, it would be nice if they could, i dunno, program set banter points like they had in the other two dragon age games. Like in cities where combat isn't happening very often, if at all.
Redcliffe, Dalish Camp, that town in Emprise Du Lion etc.
On my new character I heard at least 5 instances of banter in the hour and half I was in Hinterlands. No mount yet and I rested at every camp I came across. I do remember these banters from my first playthrough though. They just simply stopped at some point. I did go 30 minutes without at one point, so I am under no delusion that it somehow fixed itself.
No combat dialogue that I heard except Cassandra's usual "Maker take you!"
oh FREAKING great. I feel like restarting now. Dammitall. I didn't even realize. I'm at the Sword Coast with Varric, Sera, and Solas and only just realized. I've heard some banter, in fact Sera and Solas just had two in close proximity, but..yeah. I think 20 hours in I've heard six or seven in total. So I'm guessing I have the bug.
Oh, wow, this is really interesting. Thank you, Enchant! I've had no luck via mount/rest, but changing the sound settings seems to trigger banter. I ran around in the Hinterlands for awhile, trying out mount/rest. Dorian/Sera/Bull wouldn't talk, so I changed from (Home Theatre - TV), get into combat, get combat noise, a 1min later, Dorian/Sera have a banter. Stumble into more combat with correct combat noise, 1 min later, get another banter between them. Run all the way to Redcliffe Village, Dorian makes an ambient comment (I have gotten lots of ambient comments before, though), but everyone stopped talking.I teleport to the Lake Luthias camp, no banter, BUT there is music playing at the camp. Run around for a bit, banter has stopped, I changed from TV - Night. About a minute later I can hear Dorian saying something in the background - it has to be him, as there's no one else around and the voice is deep/British. The combat/voice icon doesn't trigger though, and his voice is extremely muffled, no idea what he's saying. Get into combat, once again get combat dialogue, a moment later Sera/Bull have a banter. There's also accompanying music. The banter stops again, and Dorian repeats his ambient banter from earlier (complaining about the cold), which is a bugger, because I've never had ambient banter repeat before.I thought it was a really, really interesting start. I've only spent about half an hour doing it. Still really need to spend time in the Storm Coast/Forbidden Oasis where I get no banter whatsoever, or with characters I can't get to banter - but for anyone who's hanging around the forums at the moment and having trouble with the mount/rest, it might be worth having a play. The auto-save must reset SOMETHING temporarily. Both the mount and the sound change trigger an auto-save.
You also auto-save once a minute, as I found out while doing my idle test. I ended up restarting my dwarf, because I didn't like some of my dialogue choices. I'll play with sound settings tonight as well, see if that helps.
With this glitch/bug/bad flag, I think it has something to do with the mount dismissing your companions. It seems like there is something up with the scripting of the mounts that can affect banter even if you don't have one.
Oh and someone asked what mounts we were using. I had only gotten as far as to unlock the moose mount. I used it once, and then switched back to the horse. The banter was very minimal before hand, so I don't think the type of mount I was using made a difference.
I've been having this bug unknowingly till a day ago. Here I thought there just wasn't that much banter after a point. Anyway I read up on some fixes and such and tried them out. It seems to me at least that simply resting at any camp as you go about the game increases the banter frequency, for me at least.
I uninstalled my game, re-downloaded and re-installed with no change.
I did get a few more banters that usual, but in the pattern i had before aka 2-3 banters in the space of 15 minutes then nothing for 2 hours.
The rest + mount/dismount trick didn't seem to work for me, nor did changing the audio settings. I'm gonna see if disabling the auto-save does something.
I've been playing 50+ hours on PS4, non-deluxe disc edition with a female human mage, custom world state. I've heard probably less than a dozen banters. (I've tried many different party configurations). Last night I wandered through 3 hours of the Western Approach in dead silence. I didn't even realize until I read this thread that there was meant to be combat dialogue and interactive banter, I've not seen a single one I can participate in. I'm not hearing much music either.
I tried the mount/dismount/rest (the horse is the only mount I have) and audio setting tricks but nothing works for me. I feel heartbroken, the banter is my favorite part of the game.

The horse/party composition experiment feels like a real shot in the dark. Playing around with the game's settings seems more promising, but who knows! (Maybe this is related to the Keep as well?)

The mount angle makes a lot of sense, since there is no banter while you’re mounted! So if the game, for the purposes of trying to trigger bantering, thinks that you’re on your horsie—silence. The party composition I don’t quite believe in. Anything else that could conceivably cause the game state to be refreshed—such as resting—is also a candidate for clearing out whatever bad state the game is in.
The audio mode changing seems suspect, as well, if not impossible. There’s little reason why it would only or mainly affect banter. If it’s helping for some people, I’d wager that it’s more about going to the menu than what you do in the menu. But it—or another kind of of an audio problem—is certainly not out of the question.
Another possibility I thought of was entering combat, which may cancel/postpone triggers. In addition to the actual fights, I rather frequently mistakenly hit the attack button and bring out my weapons…
But, really, if it’s at all possible it’d definitely be great to get some insight on how the triggers are actually supposed to work from the devs to help us debug this. One doesn’t even need to be in QA or programming (though some of us are) for that to be helpful.

@Efvie;
Not that this helps ultimately, but I did mount a horse with Sera right after she began an exchange, the party member that "dissolved" was silent, but Sera kept talking—dialogue was not cancelled! But I see what you mean, mounts prevent dialogue.
Yeah, I've totally stopped playing till this is fixed. If it's not fixed before my refund period is over I will ask for refund. Such a bummer, the game is broken on so many levels.
It can't be entirely mounts causing it, because I don't even bother with them. I think i've used my mount once in twenty hours.
Do they still need save? Cause I have 140 hours worth of one.
FYI, updated twitter exchange w Mark: https://twitter.com/...814047446409216
I am on the PS4. I have two 15-20 hour playthroughs and I get zero banter as well as zero background music in some areas, all I hear are my echoing footsteps. I have the weapon pack installed and I do not have a mount yet. No matter the party selection, I get zero banter, pretty disappointing.
EDIT: I also have a custom world state loaded.

Thanks Chewie. Good to see him say something more.
Tomorrow I'll try asking around on twitter and see if a dev will disclose how banter was programmed to work exactly. I recommend others do the same. Don't spam them overmuch, but ask a few politely and explain why it'll help.
Yeah, at least it's on his radar, though it sounds like they are still trying to figure this darned thing out (just like we are
). Of course, it could be that he just hasn't gotten the latest update from the devs troubleshooting the issue... after all, exec producers do have more on their minds than this banter bug!!
I can confirm that (for me at least) changing the sound settings fixed it. I dont' know for how long as I only just did it. I turned it to TV then back to headphones, and immediately I'm hearing music and within thirty seconds, Varric and Solas bantered.

Thanks! Keep an eye on it and see if it works longer term. Some of us have had banters immediately fire off after trying some of these things, and then silence thereafter...
