Changing my sound settings didn't do anything, but I went from the high quality to Night.  I'll try Night to TV back to Night and see if that helps.

I decided to reroll my dwarven archer and I haven't been testing so much as observing while I'm playing.  I've been playing normally and since I've got Hinterlands almost memorized (ah, nothing like knowing where that lvl 12 rift and those lvl 12 dragonlings are ahead of time, right,) I'm starting to go through it at a decent pace.

I don't have my mount yet and one of the only differences between my two games is that I'm taking some more time to do quests rather than get all the camps done at once.  I also rest at every campsite whenever I get to one or need to return to one.  I noticed something odd.

The last bit of banter I got was before I headed through a gate where the NPC that has you go find the apostate caches in the Crossroads.  Sorry if I don't have his name memorized.  Starts with a W.  Williks, Willis, something like that.

After I went through there, a lot of silence except for comments about the situation.  I could be way off base here, but I noticed that's when the banter stopped.  The music frequency dropped a lot when I went away from the Templar camp.  I'll play for longer and let you guys know how it goes.  I'm not doing the idle test, although once I get my mount I am going to do the mount/dismount/rest trick, because that does help for the short term.

Otherwise, forgive the lack of serious testing.  I've done so over the last three days, so I'm just going to play the game normally.  If I see anything else, I'll let you guys know.

Sorry for thread spamming, but I was quite surprised at the results. I've spent over 6hrs in the Storm Coast (predominantly with Blackwall/Viv/Varric) since the start of the game, for longer periods of time/shorter periods of time, and never gotten any banter from any party members - let alone with those three in any other region. I took them again, spent about 15 minutes in silence, and in desperation changed the sound settings again. I fought some baby dragons, and voila, for the first time in my entire bloody game, Blackwall/Viv have banter. About a minute later Varric/Blackwall have banter.  Four minutes later, Blackwall/Varric banter again. I heard some new music I've never heard from the Storm Coast. (There's a definite increase in musical cues too, I don't think I've noticed so many in a short period of time.)

Congrats! I will try to mess with sound settings too. And I agree that our problems seem to be connected with lack of music during gameplay. Mount and dismount+ rest + travel trick hasn't worked for me as the others describe. However, at least after a few tries the music appeared more frequently for a while. I hope these sound changes help. Actually I've already tried one (from standard to tv), but I didn't get into combat afterwards. I'll try it out. Thanks for your feedback !

I am so thankful for this thread! I have over 80 hours in two saves on Xbox One and was really bummed about the lack of banter. The audio just disappears randomly, I rarely hear music, my companions are so silent it is awkward and sound effects have a tendency of going out in battles. But I'm really encouraged to find that it isn't just me and that someone is taking the initiative to have this problem fixed.

Thanks!  Keep an eye on it and see if it works longer term.  Some of us have had banters immediately fire off after trying some of these things, and then silence thereafter...

It doesn't.

At least as far as I can tell. The music, it definitely fixes. But 15 odd minutes later, I haven't heard another banter.

I've tried playing with the audio settings. I've tried the resting/teleporting thing. I switched up my party make-up to included characters I hadn't run with before. In roughly 5 hours, I had exactly 3 party banter moments. They all happened within the span of 20 minutes, and they were all Blackwall and Serra.

I've heard there is some great banter between Solas and Serra. Wish I could hear it. *sigh*

I'm playing on the 360 and having this issue. Just thought I'd chime in and say that I never, ever use mounts though. I think I used my horse twice (?) in 20 hours of play, I was to worried about missing things/banters (lol). Dunno if that helps but just in case it might matter.

Same, which is why I wasn't using a mount because I didn't want to miss anything. Turns out there was nothing to miss.

I definitely have it too! They talk maybe once per hour, if anything. I thought it was on purpose, and I was just talking with a friend about missing the characters in DA2 and how much they used to talk. This is annoying.

Same here :( all that walking definitely inflated my play time, yet I still don't use a mount because...just in case! :crying:

I was randomly wandering around the storm coast yesterday and I hadn't had any party banter in at least 10 hours but suddenly Iron Bull and Cassandra had 3 banters within 20 minutes (pertaining to the romance with IB) I think I might have cried tears of joy lol

Just to give an update.  I did a fast travel to random camp in Hinterlands after loading a save.  I choose to rest at the camp within a minute there was banter between Iron Bull and Blackwall (the first banter I have heard in a long time) as well as background music.  Varric then said a random tidbit a few minutes later "good job blondie, mages and templars battling it out", no one responded.  Banter never returned.

I didn't have any results with the methods here at first, but I've been experimenting more with switching around the audio settings, doing it every 10 min or so. Tonight I got:

10:04 Bull and Varric banter
10:40 Varric and Cass banter
11:00 Bull and Cass banter
11:06 Varric and Cass banter
11:09 Varric and Cass banter
11:12 Bull and Cass banter

It's like a whole different game!! That's the first time Bull and Cass have ever spoken to eachother in 60 hours. I can't say for sure that the mounting/dismounting didn't work, but it was a 30 min gap between doing that and my first banter. The audio settings seemed to trigger it within a few minutes.

Edit: forgot to mention this is in the Hinterlands.

So glad it's helping some people! I need to do more testing myself. It would be lovely if this is a 'fix' for me as it's much easier to change audio than hopping to camp and mounting and resting!

Did a bit of testing with the resting and mounting/unmounting trick in Forbidden Oasis. Only got one banter between Cass and Cole 19 mins in, then silence for the next 50 mins. :|

On a different note, got 3 banters in Fallow Mire in 50 mins, which is way more then usual for me. Like others, I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the fact that you can't mount in that area. I also didn't do any resting there.

Going to do more testing with the audio settings, since it seems to be working for some!

Some random thoughts :
- Probably half of the rare banter I have experienced involved Sera
- I have never heard any banter I could recall referencing the class, race or previous deeds of my inquisitor
- never had any banter triggered by combat
- never had companions following up on previous discussions (ie having an argument or flirting over several separate conversation
Which could imply only non conditional bits of dialogue (or with simple conditions) will triger and any complex test would autofail

Ok here's my second round of tests.  This time I took Dorian, Iron Bull and Sera who are a new combination for the same reasons as last time.  I did the mount/dismount/rest thing and here's what I got.

17.59 - Dorian and IB banter while idle

18.01 - Combat with speech from party

18.03 - Music cuts out sometime between here and and 18.19

18.04 - Dorian comments about environment

18.15 - Sera comments about environment

18.19 - Music returns

18.22 - New location visited

18.23 - Party rest (no horse option available)

18.34  Dorian comments on environment

18.35 - Dorian and IB banter

18.54 - Dorian and IB banter.

End of session.

So there is a 1/2 hour session with no comments banter, although there is environmental commentary.  I'm beginning to think that the rest period is what is triggering the banter to reoccur because the horse wasn't available for part of this session due to the Fallow mire location and banter was triggered soon after resting.  Anyway that's all I've got.  Again I felt this session was quite chatty in comparison to my earlier Varric, Cassandra, Solas party.  There was no interactive banter available.

I did repeated tests in the Western Approach tonight. Party was Blackwall, Iron Bull, Cole:

I tried resting, then mounting and dismounting.

I tried mounting and dismounting, then resting.

I tried just mounting and dismounting.

I tried just resting.

Each of the above means I left and returned to the area.

I tried changing audio settings. Not long after I changed audio settings, I got precisely one banter, between Iron Bull and Blackwall.

I got a few coughs and choking sounds when I entered the sulphur clouds. And the only combat sounds I get are the miscellaneous grunts and the cries of "Cole!" or "Iron Bull!" when a party member goes down.

While I did get one banter exchange in 90 minutes of play and it came after I changed audio settings, I can't hang a cause/effect on that. I have previously gotten maybe one banter an hour or less, without touching any settings.

Female Human 2h Warrior

Started off at oasis with Solas, Cassandra and Dorian - got banter straight away then about 10 minutes later. Switched it up to Sera, Dorian and Vivian. All three bantered in oasis every 8-10 minutes.

Then moved to hinterlands, took 10 minutes for some Dorian and Sera banter, then about 25-30 minutes of nothing, then 3 banters between any/all of three characters every 5 minutes.

Max time with no Banter seems to be 30 minutes for me.

Never used a mount at any point during the session and I'm pretty sure it's been longer between banters in the past, I just have no record to refer to. Hope this helps!

Okay, so I've actually found that Travel>Mount>Dismount>NOT resting gives me banter. I had one from Varric straight after, and have had about 3-4 in the past half hour.

When people say combat dialogue, they don't mean in-fight contextual convos do they? They mean like, either a conversation has overlapped combat or the combat yells?

You guys remember how I said earlier that all banter stopped at that little tunnel, and I hadn't had any since?  Yeah, it's still gone.  I've hit the other camps, I have not gotten my mount yet, and I've been resting.  I've also been messing with audio settings and that didn't help.  I can tell you guys that, when I hit the Redcliffe Farm camp and rested, the rest music wasn't audible either.  Nor when I FT back to the Upper Lake Camp as well.

I'm not sure if it's a direct correlation yet, but it is something I've observed in my travels with this new character.

I have this. Completed my game after 100 hours, and only got the party banter about 10 times. I wont be so quick as to blame the bug entirely however, as my computer is running it very slowly (it got to the point that most of my movements are in slow motion). I figure it must have impact on the banter and overhearing conversations.

You know what I love about this thread? How polite everyone is being about the issue. Vocal about it sure, but no one is making demands of Bioware or acting like an entitled... something >_>

It's honestly pretty refreshing.

Yeah, I've got this too. I was wondering why the game felt so dead. I've still got heaps of love for Bioware, but I think I'll just drop this game. It sounds like I've missed heaps of content, and I don't want to have to play through again to hear it. Would be bad if you had to start a new save file when they do patch it as well. Its all pretty dissapointing.

Is this issue happening only to gamers who downloaded game from Origin/PS Store/etc.? Or the ones who bought it in a shop as a physical copy have this problem also ?

For a moment I thought that maybe file is corrupted somehow and that's why downloading game again has no results at all.

It's affecting physical and digital.
