@Jeff: Yeah, I'd say the bulk of my game time was in the Hinterlands so far, but other zones have been oddly silent as well.  As much as I dread saying it...does rerolling seem to help?  I'm not terribly far in, so this is an...okay place to restart.

I'm not sure about rerolling yet, because a couple of folks in this thread today have said they're going to do so, but it's too soon yet to have heard back from them.

Honestly, I've been considering the same thing, despite being 51 hours into the game and... not generally enjoying replaying games very quickly even if I love them to pieces. I think the even more terrifying prospect therein is, what if I do so, then a few hours in, it slowly hits me that my new file has the same problem? >_< So... I'm going to wait a few days, and hope it's fixed soon, and in the meantime I'll gladly research and report as much as possible. Once I'm done with a math paper I'm gonna maybe boot up the game and spend another restless hour warping around with people juuuust in queso.

I've probably had about 5 instances of banter in about 100 hours. I just thought it was something bioware didn't bother with

Thank you for reporting in! It's definitely something BioWare has bothered with, but some of us are being hit hard (and some harder than others... five in a hundred hours... that has even my ratio beat considerably!) with this bug.

Could you provide some info on your file? In which regions of the game's world did you encounter the banter, do you recall?

Well at least you've upped the odds of them seeing the prob Jeff Kudos.

As to where I've heard banter:

Hinterlands - 2. Varric-Cass and Bull-Sera

Mire - 1. Bull-Blackwall

Stormcoast - 1. Sera-Viv

Exalt plains - 2. Both Dorian-Cass in very quick secession then nothing for the other 3 hours I was there

That's it.

I'm also having this issue. I've got 2 games running in parallel and one seems worse than the other, though it's hard to gauge this one. My male elf mage has probably gotten 2-3 banters total with the original companions in the hinterlands.

This is not going to be an easy one to troubleshoot and fix. I have sympathy for what Allan said about QA- people expect everythingto be fixed by QA, but testers usually are looking to make sure that specific scenarios work, ie cutscene triggers at certain point, click here and that happens, etc. Something like this is far more difficult to pick out.

I hope they have added this to their fix list as it really does change the complete experience for players. Sad thing is, a lot of people may not even realise they have an issue! Which I think, unless it's an easy fix, they will prioritize game breaking and more obvious issues above this one, unfortunately. I hope that when a fix DOES come out it doesn't require a reroll for the fix to take.

I'd suggest someone tweet this to Mark Darrah and Mike Laidlaw... Just to make sure it's on their radar :)

Must be a bug or be dependant on party.

Vivienne and Solas never stop having a go at each other

I don't know if this will be worth noting, but my roommate likes to go over things.  She likes to travel as the crow flies (even when that is virtually impossible) and often ends up with quite the distance between her and her companions.  I don't know if the popping in and out of the companions when you get a distance from them makes a difference, but I thought it might be worth mentioning (since its behavior that I could see causing mild bugs).

Could you be more specific?  One of the issues with this is many of us aren't sure how often conversations happen for others.  I know some of us are doing better, some of us worse, but having a strong baseline for how it actually is might be helpful.

So I tried deleting all application data from my ps4 and then restarting my game to see if it helped, and it doesn't seem like it has. I just finished up the first trip to Val Royeaux and am wandering around the Hinterlands trying to get power for the next story mission, and banter is still really rare, even with companions who supposedly have a lot to say to each other (varric & cass, solas & viv).  It's really a shame. I'll still finish the game, but it seems so empty without the banter.  A serious letdown. And it sucks because I'm sure this is close to impossible to isolate and fix... I wish they had gone with the checkpoint system that was in previous games.

I don't think so, or at least, I believe that in my case after the numerous hours playtesting I would probably have isolated it by now if that were so, but it's not something I'm going to totally rule out. I'll investigate that later. Thank you. :)

The devs are definitely going to give it a try, at least. Now that they're aware of it and its apparent prevalence (while an exact ratio is obviously going to be impossible to figure out, I've been speaking with some people outside these forums as well and yeah, I'm getting a lot of nods about this) we know they'll be looking at it.

I actually went ahead and uninstalled/reinstalled the game itself last night, although I hadn't deleted application data, so I'm glad you covered that ground.

Allan, I certainly noticed it most in the beginning/Hinterlands specifically. Not sure if it is region based, or the particular mix of party members one starts with. I may be starting anew play through soon, so I will try to track it.

So I reinstalled my game files on the console (after finally identifying where they were lol) and oh my GOSH this is like an ENTIRELY different game almost. I mean, there are still plenty of bugs and stuff but a lot of other little issues seem to be resolved now--including the party banter and omg I am suddenly 1000% less annoyed with this game and having a LOT more fun.

I'm honestly surprised that I'm suddenly enjoying this game so much now

EDIT SINCE PEOPLE ARE ASKING:

I am on the Xbox 360, I had a physical copy of the game, so I installed the game onto my console from a disc.

For those of you asking: I did not have to start a new playthrough, the way the Xbox 360 is set up, save files are separate from the game files. So I just deleted the game files, then put the install disc in, and reinstalled. I didn't even delete my deluxe content. Or the nebulous "player profile" which was such a tiny file I presume it's related to linking to my Origins or Xbox account for achievement stuff maybe.

It did take me a bit to figure out which ones were the game files, but once I figured it out it was pretty easy. (They're each around 1.5 GB in size, give or take, the save files are MUCH smaller.) I think they were literally called "Inquisition game file 1-5" basically. Something incredibly generic.

(Although I did copy some of my save files to my other storage device for insurance purposes before I messed around with stuff.)

If my explanation isn't clear enough I'll post some pictures maybe?

Great to hear! Did you retain the same save files or did you start an entirely new playthru?

So now I'm about 21 hours in, past Skyhold and have explored more of the Sword Coast. None of the new areas yet since I need to build upon power.

I had Blackwall, Solas and Cole with me at first for about 30 minutes. No banter. Then I switched my team around to Blackwall, Bull and Sera for another 30 minutes. I had one banter between Blackwall and Sera in that time.

So eerily quiet. :(

Did you start a new character as well? I actually deleted the game off my console and reinstalled hoping it would make a difference, but nah. I don't really want to start a new game, but if that seems to fix the issue then.. I dunno.

Yeah, what Milky and Han's copilot said. Do you mean you deleted and reinstalled the game, then booted up your old file? Because I tried that as well and it didn't work, but if it worked for you then maybe I can retry.

Also, I really doubt this has any bearing, but I have the Flames of the Inquisition pack. Do other people with this problem also have it?

I’m glad for this thread. Something feels off for me. It’s definitely not a lot of banter; it’s hard to say specifically but I’d guess that over the 60–70 h played, I’m probably somewhere around two to three dozen dialogues—and I switch my party around pretty consistently.

It’s certainly not every few minutes, or even every half hour.

I haven’t noticed a huge variance by region. I basically never use a mount. (It’s not timer triggered off dismounts is it? :P)

Of characters, I’d say that Sera initiates conspicuously more banters than anyone. It could be that as much as half of mine have been with her. (Realization: that’s probably why I like having her around so much. She feels more alive than the rest, aside from her personality?)

PC, digital d/l, English. I have all subtitles on. I play with headphones so it seems unlikely that I’d just not hear it.

ETA: Does anyone with this problem have a twitch or similar that has/would record gameplay? I don’t know if it’d be useful for debugging. I’m also happy to stream if someone from BW wants to watch, let me know and I’ll find the time.

yeah, my is pretty rare as well in Hinterlands.

But it is pretty common in Forbbiden Oasis where they talk like 5 mins apart.

i prefer the 'specific locations' to trigger than the random one because i don't want to miss anything. Though I admit, i sometimes cheat and move around the area many times to finish all party banters.

and yes, if u have Sera in your party, the conversations open up more. Most of them commenting on her craziness.

Thanks for the info on what might be things working as intended. It sounds like you haven't been impacted by the glitch if five minutes apart is what you're seeing in the Forbidden Oasis. That's good! But definitely not what we're experiencing.

I deleted and reinstalled the game again on my PS4. It doesn't seem to have helped, as before, and also for 10 minutes most every sound effect was lagging by about a solid minute and the music didn't kick up until just now. Yowza, ha. I dunno if that's just, like, the game reacquainting itself with my file after being reinstalled or something, but it happened when I tried this last night as well. Probably unrelated, but weird.
