Wait so companions are actually supposed to talk during combat? The only thing I got was at nearly 45h where I was in the Stormcoast, Dorian said something about everybody feeling alright after the end of the battle. Once. Nothing besides that.

The same has been happening with the banter and the music to me. I've gone 2 hours straight sometimes with total silence, just the subtle noises of the world I'm in.

So I just killed the dragon in the Hinterlands with Iron Bull, and when I got back to Skyhold we shared a drink. My Inquisitor asked about a Qunlat phrase Iron Bull shouted during the battle (something like "Taarsidathan Athlan"), which is that infamous "I will think of this later with great respect while giving myself sexual pleasure" line, but here's the thing:
During the battle with the dragon, Iron Bull never made a peep. I certainly would remember him shouting something in Qunlat... So this is obviously a bug, and even though it's not game breaking it IS ruining my experience and ability to immerse in the role play.
I NEVER hear any combat banter apart from the occasional "Sera" "Iron Bull!" but it often happens when those characters aren't even hurt and have full health... Which is dumb.

I had it worse. Bull wasn't even in my party when we killed the dragon and he still had that scene with me. Very odd. Still amazing though. My inquisitor was pretty drunk my the end of that.

There's no way reviewers did not have this bug (which—it's safe to assume—they did not notice).

It's a reminder that the amount of time you spend on a game will treat you differently. If I had rushed towards the ending attempting to get a review out in time, I wouldn't have noticed how little characters say between quests.

This is hitting all platforms though, including previous gen consoles.  So graphics aren't making any difference.  :(

Yeah, I realize that, but as my desperation grows I'm willing to try anything, even if it probably shouldnt work haha.

The only other thing worth noting for me with the tests I ran yesterday is that I had deleted a lot of my saves so I only had like five saves for that character. Usually I save obsessively and have the max of 40 (on console). Without a tonne of saves I had banter. But I was doing the audio etc tricks too. Just thought I'd mention it.

I have 100 hrs in game, barely any banter- can go hours without a peep. Music sporadic. So so very disappointed as I was looking forward to this game since they announced it :(

I normally avoid this meme, but it fits with how quickly this thread has grown, and with how much visibility has happened so fast.

That's good. IGN article regarding the issue is on the main page of the US website.

The more attention this glitch gets, the better.

So many comments on the various articles of people only now realizing how much did they miss because of this bug.

Same issue here.

Played for 70+ hours now, on PC, Digital Deluxe.

Things that are happening:

  • Ambiente music fades in and out
  • Bards sometimes don't sing (Didn't have that issue at first though)
  • No music at Val R. and The Forbidden Oasis
  • Banters trigger rarely, sometimes in short succession & even talking about stuff that hasn't happened yet
  • Combat sounds work for some companions, but only when they make the killing blow
  • No banters where the Inquisitor could chime in since Haven

I'll gladly share a Save with BioWare, how would I go about that?

Also, I adore the game, but this in addition to the VA switch bug, the misgendering bug and the buggy dialogue wheel freezing.....it just makes me want to reroll my character once this is fixed. If it ever is, 'cause "phantom glitches" like that are notoriously hard to squish.

.

I am experiencing the EXACT same bugs on Xbox One.

I think we deserve daily updates from Bioware regarding this issue. I don't want them to just say "oh we're investigating it". I want to know if they've even identified the problem and are actively working on a patch to fix it. I would like an ETA of when they expect it will be fixed. I assumed this was the sort of thing they were working on during the EXTRA MONTH they had when they delayed the game. Guess not.

Okay, I must have this bug too. I've been sad that everyone is so quiet.....where are these grate companion combos that are supposed to be happening?

I had a couple of banters in the Hinterlands and the Fallow Mire, but since then, only one character saying something.

Usually along the lines of 'I hate/like this place'

Only noticed a couple of times where music would not be playing, but I'd hit 'save' then 'reload' and music turned back on.

Also have had a couple of times when the Bard in the tavern would be 'singing' silently.

Do they still need our saves?

I'm also on PC, Digital Deluxe edition. 53 hours into game......I noticed the almost lack of banter after about 30 hours (not that they ever were very chatty).

Have my game set to save to the cloud.

Also to upload stats in Origins.

I've apparently got this glitch too. I'm playing on PS4 and i've got about 100 hours in game. I rarely get party banter- sometimes Solas and Cole will talk, and I've occasionally heard the others, but mostly I'm running around with silent companions.

This is compared to my bf's PC game (also about 100) hours and he gets a ton more banter than me. Though if there's supposed to be banter during combat, he doesn't get that....?

I hope this gets patched soon, it definitely detracts from the experience knowing that I'm missing so much.

I'm getting ready to see family for Thanksgiving, but I figured I'd let you guys know about my playtime last night.  I haven't been doing very much testing (I've done so a lot this week,) but I have been observing.   This is on a brand new character, that's just hit level 8.

As I mentioned earlier, banter seemed to come to a screeching halt after I saw Wilkes and exited through that little tunnel near Crossroads.  This was the case for about 90 minutes, except for a couple of environmental comments.  I finally decided to go do the mount quest, and start doing the Fast Travel/mount/dismount/rest trick.  That got the banter to start coming back, and I finally got to know Solas.

I don't hit up every camp, and since I find my unleveled butt going back to camp a lot anyways, I do the mount/dismount/rest when I'm there.  So far though, that seems to be the only workaround I've gotten to work so far.  If the banter starts dropping off, I hit the nearest camp and repeat the trick.  It's worked every time for so far.  Changing the audio settings only helped with the music looping more frequently; I hear it every 3 minutes instead of 5 minutes.

I only had one banter come up in Val R.  It was the one you get after you talk to the solider.  Otherwise, none of my companions had anything to say while I was there after the cutscene doing some shopping.  I've also never heard any music in Val R. outside of the introductory cutscene either.

I never heard the "phantom horse," before or after I got my mount.  There was a few times I thought I did, but it turned out there was a ram just out of my immediate view.  Mind you, this was in Hinterlands, so I won't speak about other zones yet.  I'll let you guys know though.   :)

I can say that at least by doing this trick, I have been getting banter now about every 10-30 minutes, and I feel like I'm getting to finally know my companions.  It's a lot more fun this time around for me.  I feel pretty fortunate overall that I discovered this glitch pretty early on.   I thought I didn't have enough affection with my companions, so the banter wasn't triggering.  I was very surprised a few days ago when I found this thread.  I was searching for ways to trigger banter and the search led me here.

Also, IB has NOTHING to say to me after the initial convo options at Haven.

I'm in Skyhold now, Everyone else has had some cutscene convos, and other convo options.

IB just sits in the bar saying What's up Boss? Good talking to you Boss.

Krem is more interesting. Would rather have him along as a companion than the tight lipped IB.

To chime in re: Val Royeux music, mostly it doesn't trigger. Occasionally when I have arrived it does fire off, then it plays once and doesn't return.

Ok, please let me report my newest remarks:

(No several quick travels from Haven to other areas, I just tried on sound options + mount/dismount + cut scene)

1) random camp in Hinterlands

- I tried messing with sound options ---> without results.

-Tried to rest ---> no results.

-I mounted/dismounted near the camp.  Right after my 3rd attempt, even before I managed to stand on the ground again  --> instantly Varric and Cassandra exchanged their typical love/hate remarks

2) The desert area in West Orlais :

- Tried to mess with sound options --->  nothing

- Tried to rest --> nothing

- Tried mount/dismount inside camp --> nothing

- Tried mount-dismount far away from camp ---> right after then Varric - Dorian banter occured

3) Storm Coast  -> I traveled to Hessarian camp. I talked to that guy there. Right after the talk ----> Instant banter between Varric and Dorian again

- traveled near the shore --> Dorian's remark about the sea.

After then nothing happened for a while so I stopped.

My additional remark: Could you please also note when you hear the music during gameplay ? In my case the music appears when :

- I mount/dismount

- A banter takes place

- I walk between particular places within one area (when the place's name appears on the screen)

- After I take rest

It seems that music appears in some kind of intervals though. Do you have the same situation ? It just lasts for a while in my case, then the music stops. After a break it appears again.

BTW I've never had any random combat talk between companions , apart from the ones which are sort of put into the plot.

This one isn't a bug! You just don't have enough friendship with him to unlock the next set of dialogue options. (Try taking him out dragon hunting, he'll love that.)

I tried my hand at some playtesting last night and had SOME success:

7:55 - I tried every concievable combination of the fast travel/mount/dismount/rest trick with no success. Traipsed around the Emerald Graves in total silence.
8:23 - Decided to try the audio settings workaround. Switched from "home theater" to "TV." Fast traveled to a new camp and switched out my party to Cole/Solas/Bull, a combo I haven't used before.
8:24 - BANTER!!! HOLY CRAP. Cole & Solas talk about the Fade, and Bull has his famous "weird ass poison" line.
8:27 - BANTER AGAIN!! Cole & Bull talk about Krem, and I am blinking back tears. I'm already learning so much about their relationship and their individual personalities.
8:38 - BANTER A THIRD TIME!! Bull & Solas talk about cool Fade powers. Solas is unimpressed. Bull growls "Demons sh*t up everything."
8:59 - After 20 minutes of silence, I FT to a camp and rested again. Then we stood around doing nothing, to see if being idle triggers banter. (Spoiler alert: It doesn't.)
9:03 - AMBIENT MUSIC for the first time, but only for about 15 seconds.
9:07 - Idling did nothing, so I FT back to a camp. Rested and switched out my party to Bull/Sera/Dorian. Traipsed around in total silence again. Mount/dismount continue to do nothing for me. Changing audio settings no longer has any effect.
9:31 - FT to new camp, switched out party to Cassandra/Dorian/Varric. Set off to do some harmless side quests (claiming landmarks), ended up fighting three giants and a herd of bronto. No ambient music, no combat dialogue, no banter.
9:56 - BANTER!!! Cassandra & Varric talk about Hawke and Fenris (my Hawke's LI) and I nearly fell off my couch. I wasn't doing anything to try to trigger banter at the time, so this was almost definitely a coincidence. Still, an amazing one, and I stopped testing after that and resumed normal play.

It seemed at first that changing audio settings was a fix; it immediately resulted in 3 instances of banter in 15 minutes. But then it was back to complete silence for 1 hour and 15 minutes, broken only by a rare instance of random/"naturally" occuring banter. So I have no idea if the audio settings thing is a really huge fluke (I have NEVER had so much banter in such a short period of time), or if it's one of those things that only works in a very specific set of circumstances that none of us have worked out yet.

This is a real bummer, but the fact that I got over 50hours into the game without really noticing it apart from "Man, I wish they talked more" means it's not a dealbreaker for me. It's hard to play while KNOWING that I'm missing out on stuff, but it also means when they fix it (please, Bioware, please fix this) I'm going to have a lot of fun replaying it.

One more going to stop posting about more articles now as there's getting to be more and more but yeah

PC Gamer have also made an article  http://www.pcgamer.c...lls-npc-banter/

Think theirs a fair few gaming news sites talking about this now
