I've already posted this before: The audio settings do nothing for certain areas of the game. It seems to be coincidental for anthing else. If it works out for you, great! But certain maps simply refuse to have anything happen.

Aaah, now it all makes sense. 80 hour playthrough with practically no banter and music on PC here. Real, real shame, as I did feel more disconnected from the companions than in previous games, as running around in almost silence for hours will do to you. Feel bad for the writers too who must have poured a ton of effort into writing it, if some people get 3 banters within 15 minutes. I do hope a fix comes soon. And will then start another playthrough of course.

Hello, I started playing as a human worrior, and had an issue with the banter (one banter every 3-4 hours). As an experiment, I started a second walkthrough with a Qunari mage, and went to the Hinterlands when it was avalable. There, while running around doing quests, I had banter every 20-30 minutes. I am not sure if it is helpfull, but it seems that the fault is not in the entire game (since two different saves behave differently) I am not sure if it is helpfull, but maybe you want to see both of my save files, and maybe find the difference between them? I am not a pro in coding and game developemnt, just trying to help. Also both playthroughs are under 60 hours (the human is around 35 and Qunari is about 4-5)

p.s. sorry for my english

PS4 here.
I've noticed this. Very low banter between party members compared to the previous games. Ever since I started a romance with Sera, I basically get no banter at all between them. I usually grab Cassandra and Sera and mix it up between Dorian and Vivienne. I'm an elf DW rogue.

Also occasionally I have to skip the conversation entirely because they're stuck and won't proceed to the next dialogue speech. (Especially with Hawke) but I guess this is an entire different problem.

One thing I believe that has not been explored ... maybe is it about Dragon Age Keep/Imported world state (vs default world state, which would explain the lack of problems reported by people that got the press preview version) ?

(or at least, some elements of the imported world state). Is there anyone experiencing the problem using default at all ?

Let me explain ... Apparently, the system that triggers party banter is way more sophisticated that the one in DA O or DA2 (which was basically all about crossing some invisible checkpoint in various maps). From what I can't gather from videos and people posting the banter when it works, the system seems to check a lot of various things and flags related to the character and world state : location, previous interactions, class/race and previous actions of the inquisitor, previous banter between characters, decisions, romance ... I can reasonably assume that the various data entries and flags from the DA:K world state are stored and queried the same way as those "dynamic" flags. Maybe something here is messing up the whole system : a bad data entry, overlapping or duplicated fields, overflows, indexing issues or what not.

I know it is only a wild guess, but it's all we have.

One last thing : compared to many other threads here and in other places reporting other issues with the game, this thread has been extremely civil, and a majority of the players have expressed sympathy and their will to help towards the developers. So let us help you ;)  I mean, would it be possible, to give us some insight about the way the system is supposed to work (how and when can you trigger the dialogue ? what exactly is tested ? what are the relevant data been tested ? I see a lot of people spending dozens of hours trying to test anything they can think of, from sound options to quick saves to horses, camping and everything, and it is truly heart warming to see the community trying to help each other and the developers that way, but maybe there could be a way to use the diligence and motivation of the fans in a more ... educated way. I'm sure I can leave my party idle in the hinterlands for one hour with and without me running half naked in my apartment singing "Sera was never", but I am not sure it would be very productive. On the other hand, I could probably check whether or not running to X location with Y characters would trigger Z convo. ;)

Ok, I thought I had solved the party banter problem after getting to Skyhold, but as someone else already said, the Storm Coast is a 'chattier' place. When I went there the first time it was so silent and lonely actually, but after arriving at Skyhold I returned there and it was rather chatty. Now I'm in the western desert chasing Venatori and, again, I'm travelling with the grumpy one, the introvert and the mute -.-

party combinations I tried:

Blackwall-Solas-Sera ---> nothing

Blackwall-Dorian-Vivienne ---> one banter in one hour and a half, Vivienne complains over BW's shimmering shield

Bull-Sera-Solas ---> nothing

I've missed the banter so much! It was a lot of what made this game so enjoyable and I hope we get a fix for this soon!

I always seem to get the banter going after I change the audio settings (dynamic range mode/subtitles/etc), but it works only for a while. The music and battle audio feel like they work better also, first time I heard my inquisitor actually panic when set on fire. She's always been completely silent before.

I have two characters, one of them has no banter, while the other one has it quite often. Both of them have dragon age keep imported world

So are Bioware looking into fixing just the banter? Or the music and combat dialogues as well? i think I've played around ten hours and the lack of music and banter totally kills the game for me.. I'm still at the point where I might be okay with starting again if they fix it. Wanted to change my little elf hottie's hair anyway.

I thought it was just me... After having changed the audio settings I'm getting the background music and the sounds of birds and water and stuff, but very little party bantering and my character never joins in. I'm playing on an Xbox 360. I really hope they'll come up with a fix for this or I'll be extremly disappointed missing out on such a huge part of what makes the game.

Meh, I turned the game off in frustration.

After an hour or so in Exalted Plains (is it just me or is there literally NO music here), and swapping out companions three or four times, I only triggered two banters. Changing the audio seems to do nothing for me. And btw I have never ever heard my companions call out anything during battle! The more stuff I read on here, the more I notice the problems my game has. :(

I'm trying to not let it get to me - it's still an enjoyable game after all - but the truth is, this is too important for me to ignore.

I tried the mount/dismount/rest a bunch last night and didn't notice a significant improvement.

Would it be possible for Bioware to post all the banter? That way we can see everything we missed without having to replay the entire game? I mean, I'm planning on replaying the whole game for my other world states, but I'm very sad that I missed all the banter for my cannon playthrough, and the only way for me to hear everything I should have heard is to replay a 50+ hour games making all the same choices.

Not 100% sure if I have this issue. I've heard plenty of dialogue, but reading some posts here about how they never shut up, well mine definitely aren't like that.

Right now on my first playthrough I primarily use Iron Bull, Sera and Dorian. I've heard some good banter, too much to count but it was always in the back of my head that it seemed like very little compared to the past few game. Like I'd hear them banter 2-3 times within 3 hours of exploring.

I don't seem to have it as severe as some people but other people definitely seem to have more than me so I guess I am affected to.

I love my current crew and it's a bit saddening to know that I may be missing out of some great dialogue between them all. Especially since I don't plan on using the same combo of companions each playthrough.

PC player btw.

Generally just swapping between different settings helps me for a while. Like when I travel to an area, I change my dynamic range mode to headphones. I'll hear music and banter for a while but at some they just stop and everything becomes silent again. Doesn't work 100% but with it I've definitely heard more banter in the last 4 hours compared to the 30 earlier ones.

The exalted plains was Dark Souls level quiet for me, just the sounds of footsteps and the ambient talking at the Orlesian encampments. It does make sense for it to be rather quiet there, though.

I didn't encounter any music problems, but the banter was almost non-existent until i reached the HIssing Wastes about 100 hours in.

3 banters in 2-3 hours would be great! I think that would increase their talkiness in my game by like 1000%. I had something like 4 proper banters (not talking to the Quizzy, and not the one-off lines) in just under 40 hours.

They are REALLY quiet in the Hinterlands.

I tried the 'repair game' feature in Origins, and then went back to play, they were chattier for a bit, then just kind of stopped (seemed to stop after a couple of fast travel trips).

Have tried the fast travel/mount/dismount/rest....nothing.

Fast travel/rest....nope.

Fast travel mount/dismount.....nope.

Just wander around mount/dismount, nope.

I think I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling. See if that helps instead of 'repair game'.

And thanks for tip re: IB. I'll need to start doing some stuff that he likes I guess......but at this point I think it would only be killing stuff since I have no convo options with him.

My apology if that has been mentioned already (thread is too long to read all the posts).

I happen to investigate recently very similar issue in a program - some event which is supposed to occur very often didn't occur at all, but not for every user of a program. It appears the issue was : as this program was heavily multi-threaded (as DAI, obviously), thread where event was supposed to occur was too busy with other activity, and since event in question was relatively low in priority, it did not get enough opportunities to fire.

That would explain random nature of this bug, as we all have different hardware, and why playing other people's saves doesn't necessarily make it to appear.

Just want to give a hand to fellow programmers investigating difficult to track issue, I feel your pain :)

And for myself, no I didn't see it, my companions chat like crazy making me laugh constantly. But I have very powerful rig ...

@BigZmey

The non-chatty system, I'm running it on is an:

i7-4910MQ @2.9GHz (overclocked to 3.4 GHz)

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

Geoforce GTX 980M 8GB

500 GB SSD OS, and the game files installed in the 1.5TB harddrive

I'll have to try and see if playing on my older system if companions were more chatty.

Ah, I thought I just wasn't doing the right stuff to trigger it. I don't really have music problems and combat sounds usually work, it's just the banter, kinda sad, anyone got any ideas how long this might take to fix?

Another thing you can try (if you haven't yet) is talking to Krem and asking him if there's any way the Inquisition can use the Chargers. Every now and then, Krem will suggest something, and it'll open up a war table mission. Completing these will also earn you Iron Bull approval.

(Since romancing Iron Bull was priority #1 for me, I made sure to investigate every avenue of getting his approval lol.)

Thanks, I send the chargers on ever war table mission that opens up for them.

I'll keep sending them and see if that helps.

EDIT: 28% re-downloaded. So I'll be able to see what a reinstall does for the game soonish.
