Soooo, I may have found a fix.
I play DAI on the PC, and I originally installed DAI using the disks. My dad, however, bought the deluxe edition through origin and downloaded his copy. He also started his game without the English Voice Over Pack. His party banter works.
I uninstalled the game and reinstalled using origin download. I also deleted the folder for the English Voice Over Pack (it auto installed it.) You can find this folder in Origin-> Dragon Age Inquisition-> _Installer-> DLC and the folder is called DLC_EnVo.
This is my results. I had a party of Blackwall, Solas and Serra. I spent the entire time in a camp in the hinterlands and occasionally moved my character around:
1:49- Blackwall & Serra talk
2:08- teleported and rested
2:18- Solas & Blackwall talk
2:43- Solas & Blackwall talk
2:46- Solas & Blackwall talk
3:12- Solas & Blackwall talk
3:19- Serra talks to herself
3:44- Raised music volume
3:53- Solas & Serra talk
4:08- Solas & Serra talk
I also had continuous bouts of ambient music.
*Fingers crossed this fixed it*
Seems to be spaced out nice and evenly as well.
Too bad I'm on console. ><
with regards to the VO pack --
i never downloaded it, there is nothing in my DLC folder related to it at all. additionally, my friend is also playing inquisition right now; she installed off of the disc just like i did, and she is reporting normal amounts of party banter. if the VO pack is one of the causes combined with installing off of the disc, i'm pretty sure it's not the cause for every instance of this glitch that comes up.
Yeah, and surely since this is a multi-platform problem, it can't be the VO pack causing it?
You can find this folder in Origin-> Dragon Age Inquisition-> _Installer-> DLC and the folder is called DLC_EnVo.
Unfortunately, I don't have this folder, have not installed the english voice pack (I play with the french client), and I do have the banter issue.

Damn. I'll keep checking to see if it keeps working. For all I know, it was the reinstall. *sigh*
I also had my audio set to TV (even though I was using my PC speakers), which some have been reporting helped.
Is reinstalling through Origin the way to fix this then? My party has gone completely silent in the last 20 hours (3 days or so) of gameplay and it's making me lonely ![]()

I can attest to this. After further testing, i.e. screwing around with fast travel/mount/rest/audio, I discovered setting to TV gave me consistent background music, as well as combat music! I also had a few banters/comments trigger and I swear I almost cried because for a short time I was experiencing the game as intended and it was glorious!
This thread explains why I have little party banter =/ and have rarely heard in game music. Guess I'll put this game on ice until it's fixed really don't want to miss out on character development or music.

Okay, I have to ask since it's bugging (ha!) the heck out of me...
Is there anyone else who never hears any combat dialogue, like, at all? Many of you are saying you only hear them call out when very low on health or a companion has fallen, but I'm not even getting that. :/
I get the dialogue for people falling and low health (something like "help me!" or "cassandra no!"), but I never had panique reaction when set on fire for example (what does it even sound like?) and no after battle banter. Also no music and no banter (once every 5 years, I mean, hours)
I wonder if that's why stuff like lack of banter and music wasn't picked up by initial testers, because maybe they didn't realise what Dragon Age games are "supposed" to be like?
Some have tried with no success unfortunately... But your mileage may vary. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be one path to resolve the issue, which leads me to believe it'll be a tricky one for them to nail down...
If reinstall fixes it, couldn't it be a result of some game settings being reset or something? Like, if the problem is caused by the sound being set to something other than TV, for example, reinstalling might work simply because it sets it back to TV. Unless the settings are retained across installations...
Well, that makes sense, all in all they get SOME banter and perhaps it wasn't checked thoroughly.
Sorry for the off top but now I'm just wondering who was testing the tactical cam and what their imagination about DA games was
But seriously, I enjoy this game a lot, I just hope that our discussion will lead to something soon.
Let's not sidetrack into PC issues territory... but generally testing is quite structured, testing to ensure the right response to specific scenarios happens. So yeah, these things sometimes don't get picked up in testing as they are design decisions and the testers having gone through 1000s of hours of the game are totally used to them. It's not tested on completely people completely new to the system as that's not generally the purpose of testing (it should have been caught in design)
Wow, this makes so much sense now. I just thought that was the way things were. In my 80+ hour playthrough I heard banter maybe 10 times? It was so rare, which was really disappointing.
Just so much bugginess to this game... I guess it's a testament to how good the content is that I managed to finish at all. But man would I love to hear more banter

I play on PC and I get this issue. And I don't think it's game settings, as I have already started another play through and I have the same issue - almost no banter. Sometimes I can get a little banter if I save my game in the field and then reload it -- sometimes it'll spark immediate banter, but then I get radio silence again for the next several hours.
Just an FYI, I've had a LOT more banter since reinstalling.
What a pain.
How often are we supposed to hear the banters anyway? Did the dev said something about it? I hear 3-4 banters an hour and I don't know, but for me that still seems pretty low.
I though I was lucky, because I started a character and played for about 10/11 hours with just the starting 3 companions, and the banter worked fine. Then I subbed some of them out for the other characters (Iron Bull and such), and the banter stopped almost entirely, excluding contextual stuff.
I previously mentioned my save in the Hinterlands that gave me banter as soon as I disconnected the PS4 from the network. That was later debunked as it wasn't consistent. Out of curiosity I decided to see how much network activity is coming from the PS4 while playing. Every time you open the options menu, a few packets go back and forth. The servers were Amazon AWS, with the guise of river.data.ea.com. (This tells us nothing, just interesting for IT geeks) ![]()
Anyway - I found that the particular Hinterlands save gave varied results, simply by reloading. Sometimes it would immediately start with banter AND background music. Other times it would be its silent self. Unfortunately I tried traveling to Val Royeaux to see if I got music, which I never did. Now I'll try to keep reloading until I get banter, and just wander around to see how long it lasts. It's just curious that the exact same save with no other interaction would give different results.

Yeah I'm crazy about this game. I'd be OVER THE MOON if I got actual consistent banter and music on top of it!! ![]()

To test the music further, You can also try loading your save on such maps like val royeaux and you should hear the music playing after

If my game is really not bugged, you'll only hear the music when you enter the map or you load that map, or after you enter a new area then it will fade away after a minute or so . It's not something that's always there.
