I’d still really really like to have some pointers to how the scripts are supposed to be triggering. People are literally chomping at the bit (get it, mounts, ahaha?) to try to help resolve this problem. I can wear my “trust me, I’m an engineer” shirt, if it helps?

It’s perhaps overreaching a little to say that daily updates are deserved, but of course it’d be nice to hear about any developments.

I don't think it's at all overreaching. It's a game-breaking bug, as far as I and some others are concerned. Game companies make much of their profits on pre-orders, but it's becoming more and more apparent there's no point in pre-ordering when games don't work correctly on release. Assuming this wasn't a known-shippable (I'd buy that, it took me 40 hours to realize what was wrong) and no one really knew anything about it, then I think we should be informed on the progress of the fix.

On another note, some things that have prompted a dialogue for me, though none of these ever last long: Changing mount in the stables; traveling from Skyhold only! (quick travel in a zone does nothing) mounting, unmounting, and resting. Changing audio settings doesn't help at all. I actually got my first conversation where the inquisitor can interject today, so that was nice.

Have we received word from the devs on how often banter is normally supposed to occur or what triggers it?

Anyway, I tried both of the possible solutions that have been mentioned in this thread and here are my results:

11:03 Arrived at Exalted Plains
Mount, dismount, rest. Changed audio settings.
*There is NO music, just ambient noise*
11:04 Sera says ew, reacting to a bronto (?) carcass
11:14 Cassandra and Dorian banter
11:29 Set up a new camp. Mount, dismont, rest.
*Still no music...*
12:01 Cassandra and sera banter
12:22 Sera reacts to the environment
12:24 Cassandra and sera banter
12:27 Dorian reacts to the environment
12:38 Dorian and sera banter
12:45 Dorian reacts to the environment
12:48 MUSIC FINALLY STARTS (But only because of a dragon fight... I died after one minute :P)

Shouldn't music play when you first arrive at an area? All I hear is wind and footsteps... It's disconcerting.
And the fact that I didn't get any music for almost an hour (and only then because of a dragon fight, which has it's own special music) makes me thing there's a separate bug that's preventing music from playing... Because my companions bantered quite a bit after trying the aforementioned two solutions... I'd be thrilled if I could just hear some nice music in the background while exploring...

To anyone that does NOT have this unfortunate bug: how often does music play while exploring? Is it constant?

I had the "no banter " thing for a while , I think it depends on where you are?

I know I've taken Dorian , Solas and Cass in the Oasis and they talked a lot.

Things were quiet in the Hinterland (with the main group Solas/Cass/Varric) not much  talk in Crestwood either or the Mire.

I had a few banter on the coast between Blackwall and Dorian.

Not sure how it works exactly , I tried changing party members in quiet area , thinking maybe they had no more banters , but it didn't work.

I always have Dorian , and I had almost no banter with Viv , Sera , The Bull , Varric , Cole...

Soooo, I may have found a fix.

I play DAI on the PC, and I originally installed DAI using the disks. My dad, however, bought the deluxe edition through origin and downloaded his copy. He also started his game without the English Voice Over Pack. His party banter works.

I uninstalled the game and reinstalled using origin download. I also deleted the folder for the English Voice Over Pack (it auto installed it.) You can find this folder in Origin-> Dragon Age Inquisition-> _Installer-> DLC and the folder is called DLC_EnVo.

This is my results. I had a party of Blackwall, Solas and Serra. I spent the entire time in a camp in the hinterlands and occasionally moved my character around:

1:49- Blackwall & Serra talk

2:08- teleported and rested

2:18- Solas & Blackwall talk

2:43- Solas & Blackwall talk

2:46- Solas & Blackwall talk

3:12- Solas & Blackwall talk

3:19- Serra talks to herself

3:44- Raised music volume

3:53- Solas & Serra talk

4:08- Solas & Serra talk

I also had continuous bouts of ambient music.

*Fingers crossed this fixed it*

So here's test two. I used the exact same party as before and stayed in the hinterlands. This time I ran around and played (completed quests, got into combat, etc.) I didn't teleport, rest, mount, or change the audio settings (I did plug in my headphones, and the audio was set to TV), and results are:

4:46- Started game

4:50- Blackwall talks to himself

5:05- Serra & Blackwall talk

5:09- Solas & Serra talk

5:20- Solas & Serra talk

5:33- Blackwall & Solas talk

6:05- Set up a camp (did not rest)

6:15- Blackwall & Serra talked.

I also continued to hear combat noises (grunts, Serra yelling "Eat it!", Blackwall yelling "And stay down", etc) and consistent bouts of music.

I don't know what did it that worked for me, but there ya go. I'll try to keep paying attention to see if it stops working.

Interesting, this is a possible case as I've never downloaded the VO pack as well.

Neither did I as it's not auto installed on pre-orders (it appeared as an option post Day 1).  But I'm getting the bug.  Tonight I will try uninstalling / reinstalling and removing the VO pack if it's auto installed this time and see if that helps...

I'm not sure it matters, but Origin still thinks it's installed (as in if you go to the Dragon Age Inquisition page in the Origin UI, it shows it as installed.) I went into my folders and deleted it from there. Just so ya know :)

I really do hope this works for at least some of you. Serra and Solas bickering is pretty funny.

I didn't have the VO pack until I reinstalled the game in hopes that it might fix the non existent banter, so there you have it.

So I've tried the following fixes listed in this thread

  • Mount, dismount, rest
  • Travel to a camp then do it
  • Travel just from Skyhold
  • Change party composition

I entered the Western Approach at 30 hours played time, already wasn't experiencing banter. It's now 15 hours later and I haven't had any banter, at all. I've been trying to do things like gathering and war table stuff to avoid missing banter in story/companion quests. I've exhausted everything I want to to without actually questing so I think I'll wait till a patch comes out before I play anymore. The silence is boring.

i intended to go see if my VO pack was reading as installed but, as it turns out, it doesn't even show up on my list of addons & bonuses. i assume it's supposed to show up there and i remember seeing it when i initially installed inquisition on the 18th but. hm.

also, changing my sound settings tends to bring up some new music but does nothing at all for the banter, and the mount/dismount/rest trick seems to have stopped working for me, though even before it was flaky in its usefulness at best. i think i'm also going to put this aside until a patch or fix shows up to address the issue.

After many reloads of my "working" Hinterlands save - I get mixed results. I load the save, hear some banter - and go wandering. Indeed they do chat every 10 minutes or so. There was no discernible combat banter. The ambient music worked for the first few minutes, but eventually went back to silence - or confused. I'd enter combat and a few seconds of calm "wandering" music would play - that's assuming there's combat-specific music.

That said, when I do hear banter and ambient music - it's brilliant and definitely changes the game. Good gosh I hope this is fixed soon.

People mucking around with the audio settings - that's on PC? I assume there's no way for me to do something similar with ps4?

You can do it on PS4. Options - Audio - Dynamic Range Mode.

On PS4 when the sound goes blank I bring up the radial menu and it normally kicks back in when I close it.

I found that when you rest at one of the tents, you get music, the other you don't. Make sure you all try both tents if you are worried about getting the tent music.

The only other thing worth noting for me with the tests I ran yesterday is that I had deleted a lot of my saves so I only had like five saves for that character. Usually I save obsessively and have the max of 40 (on console). Without a tonne of saves I had banter. But I was doing the audio etc tricks too. Just thought I'd mention it.

I get a lot more banter than others and only use 5 or so saves - maybe thats a lead? Can't be sure - we are really just guessing :P

To chime in re: Val Royeux music, mostly it doesn't trigger. Occasionally when I have arrived it does fire off, then it plays once and doesn't return.

So there is supposed to be music in Val Royeaux during gameplay then? Can someone please link a video to this?

I have a little over 100 hours on my save file, and my party banter comes on often enough however, its usually just the same Dorian and Varric talking about betting on the odds of my success over and over. I also seem to experience a glitch during talk sessions where the voice is scrambled.

Now that I've more or less caught up on the thread, I thought I'd add a little more context - I'm not having the music problems that many others are describing, and I've definitely heard combat banter.  Strange how random it all seems to be.  The banter I've heard has been almost entirely between Varric and Cass who have had maybe 9-10 conversations. But the bulk of my 50 hours so far (more than half of it I'd guess) has been with Dorian, Sera, and Bull, and in all that time I've had one Bull-Sera dialogue, one Dorian-Bull, and one glorious occasion where Dorian tried to convince me that the name for the Forbidden Oasis in Tevinter means the soft downy hair on your ass (and I could successfully choose the dialogue option to accuse him of lying his face off).

Have tried all the suggestions on the thread while playing today (repairing the game, quick travel, mount/dismount, messing with audio settings, resting in camp) and have not heard a single bit of banter during my three hours in the Western Approach, alas.

If you have music, can you describe how it works for you? Like what is the behaviour of the music?

Here's the music that should play :

I'll try to make a video later showing that the music should play when you fast travel there or load a save thats in val royeaux. Any app that I can use to take videos of my game?

Didn’t have time for much, but spent about an hour and a half playing just now. Deleted the VO pack, did travel/mount/rest, toggled dynamic range… nothing, really. Blackwall, Solas, Varric. Varric had scripted dialogue in a quest, but other than that there was a single case of Solas and the Inquisitor commenting environment.

I just got pulled into the "War Room" (post launch support) to discuss this issue.  It's clearly affecting a lot of people and that it doesn't seem to be an issue for myself doesn't invalidate it for you guys.  I've passed along the workarounds as well as those give hints (for example, getting on the mount does actively suppress banter, while getting off the mount fires events to remove that suppression).

Further, it's also entirely possible that my tests needed to be longer in nature to fully realize the symptom.  Part of it was me seeing people say "I'm getting NO banter at all" so I load their save and I get a banter reasonably quickly.  But maybe if I had let it sit for a long time it'd have been more apparent that there'd be an issue.

Two things that would be a help at the moment:

1)

If someone has a PC save that is 70+ hours into the game and not had much banters that they would be able to email me (sooner the better obviously, though I know some people will be at work and whatnot) please send me a PM.  We want to start examining "Did they even attempt to fire" (there are flags associated with them to ensure they don't repeat) and stuff like that.

EDIT: I Have received plenty of saves now, thank you!

2)

Lets see if we can isolate parts of our workaround.  People seem to have some success with a combination of fast-travel, mount/dismount, and resting.  Do all 3 of these things need to be done?  Maybe only 1?  Maybe only 2?

Thank you.

I get banter  once or twice in several hours of play. It is almost shocking when you hear them speak, it's like the holy grail and I stop everything, that is how seldom it is.

But there is another issue as well. Where is the exploration music? This game is dead silence except the random nature noises, such as birds and waterfalls and steps and combat. There is never any music, hardly ever any banter. In fact I only get music when I fast travel to a camp and then some music kicks in and after the 2 min song is up, it is DEAD again. No music and just nature sounds. What gives?

Then there is the "interactive" choice in any banter where you can see a dialogue wheel pop up for you to interject a comment. No can do. The wheel is there all greyed out and you cannot select or do anything with it. What a giant fail. None of these things are working properly.

No music, no banter, no interactive dialogue in the few occasions of banter where it shows up it doesn't work.

Also Alan, did you for REAL actually load peoples save files on your own INSTALL and think that would show the problem? That wouldn't do ANYTHING at all. If your install is working it is in the actual game files and scripts, not a persons save file. Clearly it works for some people, but not others. A save file cannot change the actual install of the game files.

This is a really wide problem affecting probably half of all the players. Most just think Bioware lacked party banter in DAI, thinking the game is so big and long in duration.

Yet then you hear people getting banter every 10-20 min.

It is really annoying having this silence in the game, some banter every few hours. Then oddly you can get a few in a row and then dead silence for hours again.

This needs to be fixed, I want to play this game an enjoy and right now I feel robbed of a huge part of the game. I also do not want to wait for some Console certification of any patches. That is even more annoying knowing the PC patch just sits there for WEEKS waiting. That is really a slap in the face to us PC player, just like the UI.

Yes, Allan thought that there might be something in the game save data to test.  He wanted to check the save data first, and install hasn't made a difference to most of the folks in here.  One or two people have reported success after a reinstall, but I've seen a lot more folks say that reinstalling made zero difference.  It's easier to start with something as basic as game save data.

He has been testing his tail off and putting in overtime to get this done.  The requests for saves are just part of that process and I don't blame him for starting there.

This thread has largely been polite towards the devs and I'd like to keep it that way.  I'm pretty sure JeffZero would as well.   They've been helpful to us, so no need to snark at them in return.

BTW if able to replicate on working install with a compromised save that would tell you something as well, no? Leave no stone unturned and all that.
