A save file cannot change the actual install of the game files.
Just FYI, if the triggers and/or conditions for banter are stored in the save files then yes, the problem could manifest simply by loading such a save file.

i have no idea what i did but after "in your heart shall burn", my party members do banter quite frequently (esp. when compared they almost didn't talk at all prior to that).
i don't really use the mount so not sure if it helps but i fast travel alot. so maybe that would open up more conversations?

So here's test two. I used the exact same party as before and stayed in the hinterlands. This time I ran around and played (completed quests, got into combat, etc.) I didn't teleport, rest, mount, or change the audio settings (I did plug in my headphones, and the audio was set to TV), and results are:
4:46- Started game
4:50- Blackwall talks to himself
5:05- Serra & Blackwall talk
5:09- Solas & Serra talk
5:20- Solas & Serra talk
5:33- Blackwall & Solas talk
6:05- Set up a camp (did not rest)
6:15- Blackwall & Serra talked.
I also continued to hear combat noises (grunts, Serra yelling "Eat it!", Blackwall yelling "And stay down", etc) and consistent bouts of music.
I don't know what did it that worked for me, but there ya go. I'll try to keep paying attention to see if it stops working.
I'm reinstalling without the VO pack now to see if that helps. Thanks for the idea!

Don't know how much this will help, but I have 2 separate files I've started and one seems to have the glitch while the other one does not.
I'm in the Hinterlands, and the one with the glitch - my female mage inquisitor - has been running around for about 2 hours with no banter at all.
Meanwhile, the other one - the female warrior - has gotten 3 banters within about 20 minutes. Both saves were run on the same system, same game, on the same day, which does lead me to think this is an issue with the save files?
I'm planning to remake my mage to see if anything changes, since the only difference between the two files are literally the class of the character.

We need to be careful to assume correlation where there might be none. Hell, I need to be careful of that. I did notice that fast travel helped spark the banter though.

This thread has largely been polite towards the devs and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm pretty sure JeffZero would as well. They've been helpful to us, so no need to snark at them in return.
I still can't belive that this hasn't turned into a witch hunt. I expected people to lose their **** pretty quick. I gotta admit: I'm pretty pissed off about it and I probably won't pre-order Bioware's next game, but I'm glad they working hard to get it sorted.
I'd be pretty upset about it if I were one of the devs as well. All that money into voice acting that is going to waste on a lot of gamers. I know the game has gotten pretty nice reviews so far but I imagine that the lack of music and banter has cost them something on a lot of reviews.

Here's the music that should play :
I'll try to make a video later showing that the music should play when you fast travel there or load a save thats in val royeaux. Any app that I can use to take videos of my game?
Okay a video would be great, or a link to a video with the gameplay and that music would be good.

I think it's because it's more of a general disappointment than anger. It's easier to remain civil that way. I've also noticed that, other than the quiet, most of us have been truly enjoying the game. We just want to see it reach it's full potential.
I'm also certain that this is driving the developers crazy. Few things can get under a programmer's skin like a glitch like this.

Seconded.

If my game is really not bugged, you'll only hear the music when you enter the map or you load that map, or after you enter a new area then it will fade away after a minute or so . It's not something that's always there.
I have something similar, the music will fade in for a flourish of about 20 seconds then go away. There is no consistent music during gameplay for me, wether that's a bug or by design we need to really know for sure. Incidently, I don't really have the banter bug every time I've tested the longest I have gone without banter is like 30-40 mins absolute max.

I get banter once or twice in several hours of play. It is almost shocking when you hear them speak, it's like the holy grail and I stop everything, that is how seldom it is.
But there is another issue as well. Where is the exploration music? This game is dead silence except the random nature noises, such as birds and waterfalls and steps and combat. There is never any music, hardly ever any banter. In fact I only get music when I fast travel to a camp and then some music kicks in and after the 2 min song is up, it is DEAD again. No music and just nature sounds. What gives?
Then there is the "interactive" choice in any banter where you can see a dialogue wheel pop up for you to interject a comment. No can do. The wheel is there all greyed out and you cannot select or do anything with it. What a giant fail. None of these things are working properly.
No music, no banter, no interactive dialogue in the few occasions of banter where it shows up it doesn't work.
Also Alan, did you for REAL actually load peoples save files on your own INSTALL and think that would show the problem? That wouldn't do ANYTHING at all. If your install is working it is in the actual game files and scripts, not a persons save file. Clearly it works for some people, but not others. A save file cannot change the actual install of the game files.
This is a really wide problem affecting probably half of all the players. Most just think Bioware lacked party banter in DAI, thinking the game is so big and long in duration.
Yet then you hear people getting banter every 10-20 min.
It is really annoying having this silence in the game, some banter every few hours. Then oddly you can get a few in a row and then dead silence for hours again.
This needs to be fixed, I want to play this game an enjoy and right now I feel robbed of a huge part of the game. I also do not want to wait for some Console certification of any patches. That is even more annoying knowing the PC patch just sits there for WEEKS waiting. That is really a slap in the face to us PC player, just like the UI.

Looking at the videos on youtube by bioware, the music will really fade away after some time, unless their game was bugged as well

Ha! Interestingly, I can pinpoint the moment when I lost music both in Skyhold and Val Royeaux.
Before the Winter Palace (roughly 40 hours of playtime): save games DO play music in Skyhold and VR.
After the Winter Palace (40+ hours of playtime): save games DO NOT play music in Skyhold and VR.
Anyone who can provide proof we are supposed to be hearing music in Val Royeaux during gameplay please do post a video evidence
Be super handy to know

Hmm that kinda sucks if the lack of music is *not* a bug, considering many of us don't have banter to fill in the silence. ![]()

Those who don't hear the music or banters, can some of you pm me your save file? I will see if I can reproduce the issue, so we can pinpoint if this is save related or not. Thanks

Soooo, I may have found a fix.
I play DAI on the PC, and I originally installed DAI using the disks. My dad, however, bought the deluxe edition through origin and downloaded his copy. He also started his game without the English Voice Over Pack. His party banter works.
I uninstalled the game and reinstalled using origin download. I also deleted the folder for the English Voice Over Pack (it auto installed it.) You can find this folder in Origin-> Dragon Age Inquisition-> _Installer-> DLC and the folder is called DLC_EnVo.
odd.. I have had to reinstall the game, and both times I installed it through origin due to my physical discs giving me an error, and origin shows that I had the VO pack installed, but when I go to the DLC folder the VO pack isn't there.
I'm trying to repair the game right now to see if that changes anything. I might just try installing from the disc again to be honest.

I do get banter whenever I have tested. I don't get music in Val Royeaux though - not at Skyhold yet so can't test that. If it helps I will post my settings:
Mostly low except High Mesh and Medium terrain/Grass - High Post Processing AA and PP Effects.
I have a 3.4Ghz AMD Phenom X4 965BE and an AMD 6850 1GB
I run windows 7, use comodo firewall and avast antivirus.

Ok so I've just spent from 14.34 to 16.15 in the Western Approach which is a new area for me. I took a mixed party that doesn't usually accompany each other and these are the easiest results ever.
14.39 - Blackwall makes an environmental comment
14.41 - Blackwall makes an environmental comment
16.18 - Blackwall suggests searching an area.
That's it for nearly two hours exploring. The silence is deafening.
Music is intermittent and there are no combat barks outside of injury.

It's probably because up to this point, the people who realized they have this issue and go onto BSN to figure out how to resolve it are big time fans, and are enjoying their game even despite the issue. So they are mostly disappointed and heartbroken, rather than mad as ****. Witness how many of us are willing to put in hours to test and document the results. This may change as we get more coverage and other types of folks potentially join us. In any case, this is definitely a bug, so it's certainly not an ME3 ending situation (i.e. can't sweep this under "artistic license" LOL)
Also, we have JeffZero and Natashina to keep us on the straight and narrow ![]()

Since we're trying to get as much data possible, may I ask what edition? Digital or disc? Standard or Deluxe? Also, did you pre-order?

Im on the PS4 and I have 107+ hours on the game. I have found it a bit quiet aswell. I noticed if you mount on your horse that the banter stops and if you hop off your horse immediatly you lose half the conversation. ive alson noticed the menu wheel for potions and such wont work or for some reason i cannot choose a different character. There was this huge glitch in the Hissing wastes where i hoped on my ride and camera froze but my character road off the screen without me O_o odd

Yeah, I'd say we're being ultra-polite, especially when compare to lots of other threads. That's the only attitude which pays off while trying to actually solve a problem.
'Potential' is a good word here, it looks like the game is unpolished in quite a few aspects. However, I'm still an optimist and I hope we'll be able to simply enjoy the game after a patch is released.
I will try the audio pack idea today, I remember this content was available via origin shortly after release so - well, who knows.
