Ok I'll give my experiences with the bug so far, in case it might help.

First off, the resting, mounting, audio changing tricks have not worked at all for me. A game repair seemed to work temporarily, but I feel locations matter more than that other stuff.

I can't get banter steadily *anywhere*, but there are definitely some places where I can get it semi-regularly and places where banter almost never occurs.

Hinterlands is one of the semi-reliable places. When I was adventuring there, I would get banter at least once an hour, and sometimes banters would happen every 10 minutes (but only for brief spurts).  When I went to Western Approach, banter was almost completely silent.  I have had two banters there total, in several hours of play. Forbidden Oasis and Storm Coast seems to be very, very good for getting banters.  But again, its still spotty. I can only recall one time in the entire game when I got banters immediately after arriving at camp (that was in the Hinterlands, early on).  In "good" places like Forbidden Oasis, It will take 30min to an hour to get my first banter. But, sometimes, once I start getting them, the chain continues for 3 in a row or more.  Then other times I still have to wait another 30 min for the next banter (but that's still better than anywhere else)

I don't know if the music is really related, although in the places where I generally get good banters (good meaning one per 30 min on average), I also generally get good music queues as well.

I've never heard banter in Val Royeaux, but I do hear the music queue up half the time. I suspect this is because I haven't been willing to just spend 30 min on Val royeaux.

In my experience, combat makes no difference to how often I get banter.  I can run around just getting shards and doing no combat, and also get no banters. Conversely I can be in combat every few minutes, and still get banters (sometimes during combat).

Oh, and also: I am on PC, I own the Deluxe edition.

And I have never used the quick save in this game, if I save I always go to menu first.

I've been doing some testing on my own saves over the past few days and the results have been...interesting.

Mounting/dismounting, fast travel, resting, etc. has never worked to trigger banter for me before, so I decided to just try idling on a new save in the Hinterlands while I did other things and just ~observed~.

For one hour there was complete silence, and then banter started triggering every 10 or so minutes after for nearly 2 hours(!).

I got 13 total, and that's almost as many as I got during my whole first playthrough.

I loaded up my first playthrough then and tried the same in the Exalted Plains and Val Royeaux, buuuut nothing.
Then I went to the Storm Coast, idled, and 15 minutes in banter started happening again!?
When a bear attacked my party, I noticed the banter took a long time to start up again afterwards (~30 minutes).

Today, I did the same in the Fallow Mire - idled until banter - and after I triggered it I started running around, collecting crafting materials.
It kept triggering, but usually happening more predictably when I stopped to idle for a few minutes.
Getting into combat and even having non-hostile enemies near, though, definitely causes the banter to stop temporarily, even if I idle directly after. Around 20+ minutes each time.

SO I have a bit of a hypothesis (note I'm not a programmer, haha):
The game is checking the game state before it can fire off banters, and it's busy with other, higher priority scripts, as BigZmey suggested some pages back.
If exploring, looting, entering new areas, combat, etc. and the subsequent scripts are put at a higher priority by the game than banter, it would make sense as to why some people are only getting one banter or so every few hours;
You're just playing the game as normal, but you're also introducing new variables to the already-busy threads, which is causing a delay until it has an opportunity to 'catch up'.
Idling, perhaps at least for some, allows the game to clear the higher-priority scripts and finally be able to fire off banter.
Because you're not doing anything at all, you're also not introducing new states for the game to check for, so it's able to continuously go through the banters at the proper intervals without other scripts interrupting it - at least, as is the case for my game right now.

Mounting/dismounting, fast travel, resting, changing audio settings, etc. could be working for some people as they cause the game to clear the scripts, which allows the banter to fire off as it normally should before being pushed down the priority line.

That doesn't explain Exalted Plains, Val Royeaux, or the music, though.  Or why some people don't have a problem with the banter scripts at all.

/rambling walls of text i'msorry

It’s… less likely that it’s purely an issue of scheduling. It’s so consistent, and don’t forget that people are (and are not) getting the bug on PS4 too, for example—the hardware there is the same for everybody. So resource contention is certainly possible, but wouldn’t be my first guess, at least not as the direct cause of it.

Still, it’s very useful info that you gathered. There are various possible reasons for it, including perhaps world state flags that are cleared on interval (which happens since you’re idling).

(Now watch me be wrong about it. But without info, guesswork is all there is…)

And I have to say, it’s starting to get to me a little bit. I notice I have a hard time even trying to get into the game now. Even though a fix is probably not immediate, I might well hold off on playing my character, maybe restart with another… but all that diminishes the attachment already not built sturdy enough because of this bug.

I dunno, I’m annoyed. I wish I could at least feel like I’m doing something by testing things out but there are so many variables that from experience I know it’s almost pointless without some direction.

Can one of you who’ve managed to snag the devs’ attention try and see if they can give us a rundown on how the thing is supposed to work? Even a hush-hush briefing would be nice, if need be.

(Canadians, btw, celebrated Thanksgiving earlier in the year. Should be work as usual there.)

Guys, I have banter!!!
And music after 70 hours silence. I did what above poster suggested, turned everything down connected to online AND cleaned my journal and codex log! Got the double drum for finishing earlier quests and got a huge update on my codex because of that. Then I checked all journal and codex log to be sure all showed no new one.

Right away got music , banter for most places. Will check if everywhere is ok or not and how long it lasts.

What options are there for this for you, assuming you are PC? I am PS4... I can stop it uploading data to the Keep and turn off the auto login to EA servers etc. But not sure how I would clear the logs. I'll try anything at this point, it's been two hours now today since I got banter and I am feeling so damned lonely.

I haven't had banter for 5 hours at least.

And no music for like 3 hours (while wandering).

Ugh. The 'fixes' only work for a little while before the game is like 'LOL no banter for you!' :(  It wouldn't be so bad if we had music at the very least... but if it's a choice between music and banter I would pick banter every single time. I can play the soundtrack on my PC like I am doing atm at least.

Edit: Apparently talking about them behind their back makes them talk. Sera and Solas just had their first ever conversation! Only took two hours, I guess they're shy? Ha!

I tried to recreate this in Teagle's save and could not. Their save still has Val R. music.

EDIT: I switched backed to my save from their save, and now have music in my Val. R. I then quickloaded again, and teleported back to Val R. and the music was gone. I also realize from their save, that they get Skyhold music and I do not. Switching back and forth from their save to mine hasn't brought Val R. music back. The only thing I've been able to recreate is the loss of music in my own save from quickloading a quicksave.

Oh! I thought I was just getting the lack-of-banter bug, since music seemed to be consistent across areas for me - but I've definitely never heard any music in Skyhold. Interesting.

Playing on ps4. Everything that showed unread. Or marked unread. Checked one by one. All quests, finished quests, codex, inventory.

And in option menu under account uncheck everything. Hope it helps.

Still no music in Val Royeaux though

[1 Hour Western Approach Test - PC]

http://forum.bioware...ews/?p=17900038

^ Please Visit there to see my earlier post [bottom of page 51 of this thread]

I'm doing as many tests as possible, please beware... this post is going to detail everything I did over a 1 hour period and note down when music chimed in and when companions spoke, and what settings I was running at the time.

Test started at 17:06 GMT and ended 18:15 GMT approximately (69 minutes... heh... 69, heh heh).

Settings: Graphics all set on Max.

Audio: Headphones, Volume 100%, Subtitles for Conversation & Ambient.

GAME TIME: 68 hours 54 Minutes

Reinstalled Game (fresh install)!

System Specs:

Intel i7 4790K OC'd @ 4.7GHz
8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 2133MHz
2GB EVGA GTX 770 SC
Asus Z97-K CrossFireX MB

Driver: 344.75

VAL ROYEAUX

17:06:00 Loading Val Royeaux (10 Seconds)

Companions: Solas, Blackwall, Cole.

17:06:10 - 17:12:00 Running around - No Music

17:12:34 - Leaving Val Royeaux, Heading to Western Approach [Total Time Spent 6 minutes, no companion conversations]

WESTERN APPROACH

17:13:00 - Music (10 seconds)

17:16:15 - Music (15 seconds)

17:18:00 - Music (10 seconds)

17:18:50 - Exit Cave, Music played (35 seconds)

17:23:10 - Music (10 seconds)

17:24:00 - Went into Settings -> Account | Disabled all 3 options and changed Audio to HOME THEATER.

17:24:20 - Music (40 seconds)

17:26:20 - Music (50 seconds)

17:28:00 - Music (30 seconds, whats going on)

17:29:00 - Hopped onto Horse Mount and jumped off 22 seconds later.

17:29:57 - Music (18 seconds)

17:31:30 - Changed Audio to TV and music played for 30 seconds

17:33:31 - Music (42 seconds)

17:34:30 - Swapped Team to Iron Bull, Dorian & Blackwall

17:35:50 - Music (10 seconds)

17:36:40 - Fought NPCs

17:38:10 - Music (10 seconds post fight)

17:42:47 - Music (15 seconds)

17:44:00 - Changed Audio to HOME THEATER & volume at 80%

17:45:00 - Attacked Darkspawn outside of Griffons Keep - Companion Dialogue [Inquisitor: Where did they come from? | Iron Bull: We can find out.]

17:49:00 - No Music or dialogue for 4 minutes.

17:49:35 - Entered Cave below Griffons Keep, Music played for 40 seconds.

17:51:00 - Hide Helmet (I'm really getting desperate here hahaha)

17:51:54 - Still in Cave, spotted Well rope and climbed up into Keep, Music Chime for 4 seconds.

17:52:20 - Quick Travel to Lost Camp

17:52:36 - Music (24 seconds)

17:53:35 - Changed team to Cassandra, Varric and Solas.

17:54:00 - Changed Audio to NIGHT.

17:54:22 - Music (52 seconds)

I've noticed that... changing the audio settings somehow makes the music play longer? And then the time the ambient music plays reduces significantly over time. I don't know why. But I'm seeing a pattern here. Or maybe I'm picking at straws.

17:56:16 - Music (12 seconds) yeah something is definitely wrong here.

17:57:23 - Music (27 seconds) oookay.

17:58:48 - Music (57 seconds) a new RECORD!!!

17:59:50 - Disabled Anti-Virus for 20 minutes and restarted game.

18:00:50 - Loaded Game

18:01:00 - Changed Audio to HOME THEATER and volume at 90%

18:02:25 - Entered Griffons Keep via Metal Doors (main entrance), Music plays for 34 seconds.

18:03:25 - Picked up Book (codex) on top floor of Griffons Keep near Potions Table, DIALOGUE! Inquisitor says "We should be prepared, a cornered beast is dangerous" or something like that.

18:04:15 - Game Saved

18:05:28 - Music (30 seconds)

18:07:09 - Approaching Darkspawn Fume Cloud area north of Griffons Keep, music plays for 35 seconds.

18:08:30 - Music (22 seconds)

18:09:30 - Found Shard Skull Scanner North of Griffons Keep, post-scan music plays for 19 seconds.

18:11:35 - Changed Audio to TV and volume back at 100%

18:12:19 - Music plays for 44 seconds, but around 18:12:50 music crackles and pops, strange audio skip sound while I'm running back to Griffons Keep

18:13:50 - QT back to camp, music plays at 18:14:24 for 27 seconds.

18:15:35 - Travel to Hinterlands, cry to myself for wasting my time and go off to eat dinner.

Overall Game Time: 70 hours 11 minutes

So, there you have it. The ambient music plays intermittently as you explore through the region, but none of my companions, none of them whatsoever decide to speak to one another. There is no dialogue between anybody. I also noticed I do NOT get any "full tracks" playing, music cuts off after 20 - 40 seconds depending on what track it is, and there are several. I also heard one particularly lengthy track which did not repeat in the 1 hour I was mindlessly exploring Western Approach.

---------------------------------------------------

So here is a summary of what I did in the 69 minutes which didn't work.

1) Disabled Antivirus

2) Changed Audio settings

3) Disabled Origin Ingame

4) Disabled Account settings which upload data / feedback / login

5) Changed party members and idled for long periods of time

6) Constantly entered caves, structures to trigger dialogue.

7) Reinstalled the game

8) Rode on mount & dismounted. Manually hopped off horse, and then ran into bandits who shot me off horse.

---------------------------------------------------

Things I have not attempted:

1) Suicide (Ha Ha notfunny)

2) Changing my mount in Skyhold which I shall do before I run my 1 hour Hinterlands test.

The reason I did all of this was to find out whether all these other things people have done actually will work for me. They didn't. Unfortunately.

Back in another 2 hours or so! Wish me... luck.

Update: Running Tests in Hinterlands - Will Change my mount and will swap party members every 25 minutes. test will run for approximately 1 hour.

Update 2: I have suspicions that party banter is higher in Crestwood / Storm Coast and others have suggested I go there. I'll prioritise Storm Coast and get back to you all in the next 2 hours.

Today I was in the Emerald Grove and had A LOT of banter :D Once every 10 minutes or so...

Party: Blackwall, Dorian, Solas

I also heard the 'Orlais' music trigger a lot and even inappropriately while walking in the woods but... yay!

... ok the banter between my bf (Blackwall) and my best friend (Dorian) was not too friendly but I hope they'll get to like each other ç_ç

Oh I did nothing in particular, it did all by itself

Again, sorry for my english.

Hey, I think I found something that worked for me. I don't know if it will work for everyone or if people already know about it.

So, at moment I have music in the open field, Skyhold AND in Val Royeaux (YAY! FIRST TIME) and 3 Banter in one hour without doing something funny.

I disabled all functions under the option Account (Share usage data, always log me in, Upload yadada), didn't log in ingame in my account, turned off my Antivir and disabled Origin In Game.

This was one hour ago and until now everything is fine. Sometimes the music in the field will stop, but will started again after a fight.

Hmm so this worked for a few people. Can more people test this out please?

Right away got music , banter for most places. Will check if everywhere is ok or not and how long it lasts.

This might have worked for me.

I went into the journal and hovered over every single quest which still had a diamond icon next to it

This includes:

Active questions

Collections

and

Completed Quests

I then sat through a whole lot of 'quest complete' notifications with the accompanied SFX

I then went into options and into account and turned 'upload' on

Then I saved and exited to main menu and logged in.

Loaded and within 10 seconds Viv and Sera were arguing. This is the first time I've even heard Viv talk in the party.

Time will tell whether this was just an amazing coincidence...

Guess as the weekend is coming up we might not hear back till Monday hope I'm wrong though an update would be nice

Technically, it's friday, a working day. Also, Thanksgiving was a month ago in Canada.

I just hope that this silence means they are actively working on it.

I'll be honest, this is really testing my patience. They basically left us in the dark with a broken product.

Western Approach is one of more quieter areas for a lot of us it seems. Perhaps try Storm Coast or Crestwood.

Good idea. I recall Iron Bull & Dorian speaking to one another when I did his personal quest in Storm Coast, he mentioned how Dorian was good at fighting and I believe this was around the 62 hour point. I'll swap my test to Storm Coast.
