That sounds like an extreme version to be sure. 80 hours and not a single instance? A new record. I'm really sorry to hear it hit you that hard. As for the lack of conversation options back at Skyhold... geez,  that's rough. It might well be a separate bug outright, though.

Well to be honest I got like three banters from Solas at the very beginning of the Hinterlands and became dead silent after that. Until I saw this thread I had assumed that Bioware didn't even put in banter or half of the party conversations.

Just once I would like buy a PC game at launch and actually have it work :(

I might have this bug (PC).

Sometimes they talk. Largely silence though.

I've played for around 47 hours and I've only had about 10 instances or so of dialogue between them. Is it supposed to be way more frequent than this?

I'd say so. Other players have mentioned having far more banter trigger for them throughout the game, and we've seen videos showing it firing off much more frequently, as well as options for the Inquisitor to join in at times, too.

Yep you have the bug. You're supposed to be getting banter every ten minutes or so.

I just realized before this thread I didn't even know your PC could respond to banter outside of Varric at the very beginning of the game. What the hell game have I even been playing all this time!?

I didn't know either! I'd guess those are relatively rare, though. If folks like us are seeing virtually nothing then it's no huge surprise we'd never hit those.

Like, sometimes in the neighborhood of "I've completed the game and spent 90 hours on it and in that time I encountered less than a dozen instances of it" levels of glitched. This appears to be impacting multiple platforms. Myself, I'm on PS4, I have 51 hours, I've switched my party around constantly, and no matter where I go, no matter what I try, nothing. Varric and Solas occasionally speak; that's it.

I know this isn't simply the game not having much -- if you're in a similar boat and think that's the case then I can tell you, you may be glitched, too. Other users have reported more banter here than in previous games, posted lists of their favorites, made YouTube videos of playthroughs in which companions virtually never shut up or at least chat amongst themselves every ten minutes. Some have even claimed the Inquisitor sometimes gets to chime in with player-selected cues -- none of this, any of this, has ever triggered on my file or the files of many others.

I tweeted John Epler about it. He stated that it sounds like a scripting issue. But let's get the word out here in the Feedback section. I know many posters on the other boards have reported it, so devs, if this thread should happen to get lost in the shuffle and no one else replies, please check there for confirmation.

in my experience certain companions have "more" dialogue with other companions.  Verrick and Cass will needle each other all day.  Viv and Sera the same (actually those two have some of the funniest conversations)... Iron Bull hits on Cass non-stop which is pretty funny as well... Solas has a lot to say to everyone who's not another mage~ the tevinter mage seems to hit it off with iron bull and verrick pretty well, him and viv have some interesting convos as well, blackwall is too dull to party with, and cole just talks to himself mostly.  Overall i found the parties get lively if you include pairs that talk a lot... so Cass, Verrick and Iron Bull will talk all day, while Solas, Cole and Blackwall will mostly be reduced to commenting on cole's random musings... leaving for some really dull conversation.

btw: in my experience Cass, Verrick and Iron Bull seem to trigger the most "banter" opportunities for the main character.

Indeed, I'd hazard to guess that you aren't inflicted with the bug. It's good to have outside perspective from some folks who are getting what is probably the intended package here. Many of us are basically never hearing anything, though, no matter who we bring. Or at best, it's an hourly affair, no matter the group. Certain characters you have mentioned have never spoken to another character on the field for me at all, and for some other posters that applies to everyone. I'm glad to have it reaffirmed for everyone that it's in there, in the game, somewhere, though. It just needs to be found.

Nah, we don't have official confirmation on anything like this right now. He or she is running off of what several other players have said in various threads on the forums, though.

10 to 30 minutes at the maximum probably. If you're 40 hours in and only heard a few unprompted remarks and never had a PC reponse you probably have the bug sorry :(

well I'm waiting for them to patch the PC u.i and tactical camera before playing so I guess I'll just wait to see what happens with this as well.

What? Your own character has banter with companions? I can't remember if this has ever happened at all for me when running around. (playing on PC, digital download through origin).

I am having this issue as well - about 45 hours in.  I was just talking about the game with a friend who has had to pause the game multiple times to laugh at the banter, and my perspective was that it was probably something Bioware decided not to do.  What a disappointment to find out that I'm simply missing out.  Its really hard to care about the characters when they're totally silent accessories.  I'd quest solo but I'd probably be eaten by a bear.  :(

I really hope this can be addressed. Hell! If I had any reason to believe that buying a new copy of the game or switching to a digital copy would work I'd do it in a heartbeat!

On the plus side if this does get patched I'll have a whole load of new (to me) content for my second play through.

Yea, for me, Dorian and Blackwall were squabbling about something (I forget what) and a dialogue option popped up for my Inquisitor during their banter. She responded with something like "you're such men!" in a sort of 'mom scolding squabbling kids' tone.  Was pretty funny.

Banters with Sera, Dorian and Cass are a scream, as the witty ones tend to pick on the straight laced Cass.  As is Varric and Dorian.  Haven't traveled much with IB but my daughter has and she laughs at everything he says (she's a big fan).

*Edit* To clarify, I play on PC, digital download and I can't get the companions to stop talking at over 40 hours played now.

That hasn't happened to me yet either in about 20 hours of play. I do get some banter but long stretches without anything.

Do you mind if I ask what system you're on? Disk or digital copy? What sort of Inquisitor you're playing as? Etc *edit* never mind

I also have this bug. I thought the game just lacked banter, and it's made me feel so incredibly removed from my companions compared to other Bioware games. I don't really have much faith in this being patched any time soon, however, considering it's not "game breaking" and from the official posts I have seen, Bioware is more concerned with graphical errors than story ones.

They've been pretty quiet in my game too. But I can't decide if it's 'too quiet.' I figured since the areas are so big maybe the devs made the triggers further apart so that you didn't run out of banter too early. I explored all the starting areas (everywhere you could before advacing the main quest) and I got maybe 7-10 banters. Does that qualify?

The more I think about it, the more this pisses me off. A whole swath of people are blissfully unaware, but for those of us who know, it's resulted in a lot of wasted hours where we are not getting the full experience. On top of that, there is no visibility on a fix, or any time line to resolve. It's exceptionally frustrating. Think about the amount of time wasted across all of our play sessions. I almost prefer agame stopping bug as then I would halt all play and wait for the fix. I'm not as patient as Jeff :)

No I'm feeling reaaaaalllly annoyed too.  I tweeted Mike Laidlaw about it, I want to hear the banter dammit that's like one of the main reasons why I love these games so much and I'm missing out. But at least we're not alone? :) Still though, super annoying.

Yes its almost enough to make me put down the game until they fix it.

The devs now know, but yeah, remind 'em a few times via twitter and the Origin page Allan supplied if y'all wish. Making sure they recognize this isn't an isolated incident is good thinking. Just remember to be polite and respectful, please!

I'm guessing it's more widespread than is maybe realized-- many people with the bug probably think it's how the game is supposed to be.  A cursory search of reddit/tumblr shows there are quite a few people noticing this issue.
