Party Banter Silence/Near-Silence Glitch Thread [Update 11/30: An up-and-coming new workaround! And an OP design edit!]

I don't expect Darrah to be on top of everything we're saying here, and he's obviously not the specific one dealing with this issue.
I'm just frustrated because his tweets give me the impression that they don't think this is a *real* issue, and they are saying "investigating" but what they really mean is "confirm it's not our fault"....which is an approach that may not be helpful to us, ultimately.

I have one more question from those who got it to work. Is the music supposed to be continuous, or periodic?
I believe periodic, at least in the Hinterlands.

Periodic. Around every 4 minutes.

it's periodic from what i've gotten since clearing my journal. i can get 10 seconds - 1 min 30 seconds of music at a time, and then it goes away for a bit. it is by no means continuous, but that might also be a problem? if more people without it would show up we'd know more xD

To be fair to Mark Darrah, pretty much everything he's said is true. There will be some people who do not have this problem but think they do, as from what I can gather, the banter happens at a fairly random timeframe, and things like combat/saving/horse riding could result in no banters for an hour or two in a completely functional game. On top of that, I'm also sure there are people who have exhausted their companions banter, but are now concerned that they're being affected by a bug.
I mean, I've got a game that's got fourty-five hours into it, and I've had exactly three banters in that time. I'm more or less at the point where I'm not going to play again until they fix it. But considering that we fans are probably putting thousands of man hours into trying to fix it and haven't even come close (I've tried everything listed in this thread, as well as troubleshooting the problem myself to no avail), there's not going to be an easy fix. And sadly, with console patch certification, I'm afraid patches are probably going to be few and far between.
I wish just starting a new game, or even a completely fresh install or something could fix it, because damn. It's pretty game breaking for me.

They're "still investigating."
If they had Veronica Mar on the team, this case would have been solved
.
So I'm still unsure of as to what the average is.
Like just now I had TWO banters in two minutes! But before it was an hour between. So I'm just confused as to what the "norm" is...Has bioware given an official statement on the amount of what we SHOULD be hearing?

Not that I'm stalking devs on twitter or anything, but...
How did we ever not think of such an obvious reason behind this issue in all 60 pages of this thread?!
Cool, so I guess that Varric and Cassandra only have two bits of banter. I guess I just exhausted the only two banters we get. Three way conversations? Pfff, that's merely a rumor. I guess that Dorian and Blackwall only have two bits of banter as well. ![]()
You know, someone needs to do a livestream/twitch of their experiences with the lack of music and banter.

Yep. That's been my experience. I've polished off my first playthrough at 96, 97 hours, and in that time I heard a sum total of <10 banter events. Sucks.

Heck, I could do that, but knowing my luck, the second I started streaming, the problem would fix itself and I'd ruin everything we're trying to achieve here, lol.

I tested the game without the online settings and with the journal trick. It resulted in banter every thirteen and music every three minutes for an hour. I will try it again for a longer time at the weekend.
I'm quoting you again because I've checked off everything "the right way" this time around.
In the span of 12 minutes I got Sera commenting something about an area, and a long exchange between her and Cassandra. I also got some music in the Hinterlands. I'll play around a bit more and see how it goes. You REALLY might be onto something. ![]()
I'll also point out this has been my first comment about and area from one of my companions. 26 hours in.

Go for it anyways. If it doesn't work, the devs have some solid proof. If it works, then that's another idea to toss onto the pile. ![]()

This might have worked for me.
I went into the journal and hovered over every single quest which still had a diamond icon next to it
This includes:
Active questions
Collections
and
Completed Quests
I then sat through a whole lot of 'quest complete' notifications with the accompanied SFX
I then went into options and into account and turned 'upload' on
Then I saved and exited to main menu and logged in.
Loaded and within 10 seconds Viv and Sera were arguing. This is the first time I've even heard Viv talk in the party.
Time will tell whether this was just an amazing coincidence...
Since going back to the Western Approach (the above argument was in the Hinterlands) there has been no banter.
The only thing that has been said is a comment about sand from Sera. Been playing since I posted the above (2.5 hours)

Yeah and those mythical "interactive banters" the devs bragged about? I got exactly ONE of them, during the prologue. That's it. There should have been at LEAST one per companion and preferably two of those over the course of a "100 hour game"

That's just depressing. Sorry, we're all complete idiots and didn't think of switching out our party - oops our bad.
The funny (and sad) thing is, even if I didn't think to switch around party members, I still wouldn't have exhausted all the banter!
...I love all of you.
We love you too.
I'm a little offended by those latest tweets. This is a serious glitch that is affecting my enjoyment of playing the game and he's been so dismissive. ![]()

I'm trying not to to read too much tone into his tweet. It could be dismissive, but it also could be just him trying to be concise. Twitter isn't the best place to gauge tone in text.

I can demonstrate that it's not a matter of perception with the following example:
Being the perfectionist that I am, I have trouble finding the 'right' look for my characters. I tend to start, play for a bit and restart at least twice(sometimes way more v.v). Just so that my character ends up looking like something I could spend the next 100+ hours playing with. My first venture into the Hinterlands was amazing and part of that was, yes, the banter. There were two instances right from the get go, where Cassandra, Varric and Solas interacted. The music was something else, immediately cementing my believe that I was going too spend waaaaay to much time in the Hinterlands. But alas, my character had 'glossy lips', which irked me enough that I ended up remaking...
My next encounter with the Hinterland was barren. The banter didn't trigger. At all. For over 90 minutes at least. I had a context sensitive reaction from a party member, but that's it. It was, and unfortunately still is, a noticeable difference.
From then on I have tried various ways of triggering banter, but always find they 'die out' or simply don't trigger at all. And when I say 'die out' I mean that two companions who haven't said anything to each other over the course of 30+ hours, barely speak three lines. Val Roy? Deadlands, as far as music and banter are concerned. Other areas vary; some never get banter, some minimal, triggered by a 'rest/mounting trick' that doesn't last. I've tried restarting, reinstalling and screwing around with some settings. I've tested our various 'methods' and thought up theories to explain it. Nothing worked, or offered a permanent fix.
I get that by now there have been multiple theories and 'fixes' that might seem like a matter of perspective. A bunch of wild guesses. We are grasping at straws here, yes. Some theories and fixes might sound ridiculous even. But I believe that's because we simply don't know; we don't know what causes this, how the mechanics behind it work(or should work). So gathering info, keeping logs and sharing what we learn is all we got at this point.
I hope Bioware gets to the bottom of this and doesn't pass it off as a matter of perspective, but takes it seriously. I'd say they have so far, so I'm trusting they will get cracking and try to figure this out as soon as possible.
... After spending time with their family over the Thanksgiving weekend, of course.

You guys might be onto something with the journal thing-- I've noticed the little "check" noise happening in the background when I haven't updated or finished a quest while resting, fast-traveling, wandering around... remember thinking it was odd but didn't give it much thought. I'll test tonight and report back!
edit: Hmmm, did all of you also restart a bunch of times before deciding on a character? I must have done it like four or fives times. Could that have something to do with it? *grasps at straws*

[Storm Coast Banter Test] - Appx 3 hours
Okay guys, I did a major test on the Storm Coast which lasted... a long time... and it yielded some interesting results. I'm pretty damn tired right now but... here we go!
Party: Cole, Blackwall, Solas
19:27 - Enter Storm Coast
19:27:55 - Music (30 seconds)
19:29:30 - Dialogue! Cole: "One by one..." Blackwall Response.
19:32 - Music (18s)
19:34:22 - Fought undead, music plays after (15s)
19:35:48 - Music (44s)
19:39:00 - Enter Mountain Cave SE of Blades of Hess Camp | Dialogue! Cole & Solas discuss, Blackwall says he doesn't understand.
19:39:50 - Music (24s)
19:41:00 - Audio Settings changed to HEADPHONES, 80% Master/SFX, 100% Music/Dialogue
19:41:20 - Music (10s)
19:42:00 - Exit Mountain Cave SE of Hess Camp.
19:42:50 - Music (28s)
19:44:55 - Music (22s)
19:46:00 - Toilet Break, hey I'm human! (120s)
19:49:40 - Approaching Coast near Sea, music (20s)
19:51:00 - Blackwall says "Everyone alright?" No response, I assume this is a combat phrase.. odd.
19:51:10 - Music (8s)
19:53:40 - Fought enemies inside cave, battled for 50s
19:55:00 - Music (20s)
19:55:45 - Heading to "Morrins Outlook"
19:57:07 - Music (5s)
19:57:21 - Dialogue! Solas doesn't seem like a Soldier according to Blackwall, they discuss soldier stuff.
19:58:08 - Music (28s)
19:59:50 - Music (35s)
20:02:06 - Music (10s)
20:03:05 - Heading towards Great Cove area
20:03:25 - Music (39s)
20:05:20 - Music (37s)
20:06:13 - Music (7s)
20:07:58 - Music (17s)
20:09:10 - Music (19s)
20:11:10 - Avoiding Combat and gathering items
20:14:40 - Kill Bear
20:15:10 - Music (25s)
20:16:40 - Enter Great Cove
20:17:00 - Music (30s)
20:17:45 - Paused (1 minute)
20:19:06 - Music (10s)
20:19:40 - Enter Long River
20:20:20 - Manually Rest at Small Grove Camp
20:20:35 - Wow, rest music finally played!
20:20:45 - Music (20s)
20:21:20 - Companions changed to Cassandra, Varric & Solas
20:22:00 - Cassandra says "It's done", I think this is a random combat phrase, same as Blackwall before. Very odd as no enemies near, nor any combat initiated.
20:24:11 - Attacking Hurlock & x2 Ghouls, Cassandra says "Hurlock will put up fight, stand ready!"
20:26:00 - Hurlock defeated
20:28:00 - Approaching Driftwood Margin Camp
20:28:15 - Music (41s)
20:28:55 - QT to Storm Solitude Camp
20:29:40 - Music (20s)
20:30:30 - Dialogue! Cassandra apologises to Varric for the "table" incident.
20:31:15 - Making way to Mountain Cave on SE of Blade Hess Camp (to possibly trigger dialogue)
20:32:30 - Great Cove entered
20:33:30 - QT Storm Solitude Camp
20:34:00 - Companions changed to Cassandra, Dorian & Iron Bull.
20:36:50 - Made it to Mountain Cave, no dialogue triggered.
20:37:30 - Music (20s)
20:41:05 - Resting at Camp
20:47:50 - Loading Val Royeaux
20:48:20 - Val Royeaux No Music
20:49:00 - Back to Storm Coast
20:50:00 - Opened Journal, selected all of the Completed quests which had a yellow * next to it. Did the same with Current Quests & Collectables.
20:50:36 - Cassandra shouts "we are victorious", again, strange dialogue considering how I'm not in combat at all.
20:51:30 - Music (30s)
20:52:22 - DIALOGUE! Same area as 19:29:30 (West of Storm Solitude Camp) between Iron Bull & Dorian.
20:53:20 - Dorian complains about being too close to the Sea Coast, making him seasick.
20:55:00 - Another odd dialogue shout by Cassandra (Victorious, as in 20:50:36)
20:56:08 - Reached Morning Outlook
20:58:00 - Music (80s) A super new record for ambient music!
21:00:45 - Companions changed to Sera, Solas & Viv
21:01:00 - Rest
21:02:00 - Sera says "good on us, yeah?" another strange combat call.
21:03:30 - Kill some Darkspawn
21:04:10 - IDLE TEST TIME! [Wears Lazy Hat]
Note: At this point I know that the music works, I'm purely waiting around for Dialogue to begin and note down the times while I stay still. There are no "full themes" that play in the Storm Coast, however. Just small snippets of music during this period, which I can't be bothered to note down anymore haha
21:12:00 - Companions swapped to Dorian, Viv & Cole - Please Note, I have NEVER used this party combination before, ever!
21:17:15 - Journal, Codex and Items all checked.
21:26:30 - Dialogue between Cole & Viv
21:33:00 - Dialogue between Cole & Viv
21:45:30 APPROXIMATE! - Dialogue between Cole & Viv
I decided to run around and do things for about 20 minutes and then stopped moving again, and then all hell broke loose.
22:03:00 - Dialogue between Cole & Dorian
22:05:00 - Dialogue 2 minutes after between all 3 party members, ridiculous!
22:07:00 - Dorian & Viv dialogue, oh my god something is happening to my game, suddenly everyone is talking with each other!!!
22:13:00 - No dialogue so far. It's just music every 2 minutes or so.
I really can't tell how or why everyone is suddenly talkative with one another but on average the dialogue happened every 20 minutes.
On the other hand, I think at this point in time I have exhausted most of Varric, Cassandra & Solas' dialogue. I am assuming that I must progress more in the story before they speak to each other.
Well, that's as much as I can do for today. I'll use the same settings I have just now tomorrow when I go to the Hinterlands. I think Western Approach has no dialogue, perhaps some sort of script in that area prevents actual discussions from happening. Anyhow, hope this helps.
For reference, a nutshell of what I did to achieve these results:
1) Audio - Headphones (volume level is irrelevant)
2) Origin Ingame Disabled
3) No Launch Commands have been entered (60fps, debugs etc)
4) Ran around killing enemies, idling, no questing.
5) Checked all of my Journal & Codex to make them "marked as read" so to speak.
6) Swapped companions when I felt that I had not had a particular group used before (Viv, Cole & Dorian is something I've never done).
7) Game repaired on Origin
8) Latest Video Drivers.
TOTAL GAME TIME AT THIS POINT: 73 HOURS AND 7 MINUTES
Tomorrow when I am in the Hinterlands, I will use the following groups:
1) Cassandra, Blackwall, Cole (30 mins)
2) Iron Bull, Varric, Vivienne (30 mins) and simply idle as much as possible to test out two things: Dialogue & Music only. I shall use the same settings as I did for the Storm Coast.
Till then everyone, keep testing and figuring stuff out. I'd like to think this might be helping people.
