Yes. I sat in Orzammar forever, running back and forth and changing out party members to just listen to them talk. It made them all so real, and hearing Shale and Sten's friendship made me feel guilty if I didn't have them in the party together. Nothing like that with Inquisition. I have no idea how anyone feels about anyone else, aside from Cole and Solas, who I've been lucky enough to hear together.

The relationship between Cole and Solas is one I was most interested in learning about. I've not heard a peep from those two. So disappointing.

Regardless of what Bioware does to fix (or not to fix) what is practically a broken game (at least in terms of character development which is, uh, kinda important for this company), I want to thank everyone in this thread for fighting the good fight and spending hours and hours testing and reporting on possible fixes. Thank you, because as soon as I realized I'd been playing half a game I was so gutted I haven't been able to play ever since so I've just been silently stalking all of you guys. Kinda like our party when we take them exploring.

OKAY, SO, I did one last thing out of desperation before I was going to quit for the day and it...actually...seems like I might have found something?

I play on PC, I've got two harddrives, an SSD and just a normal drive. I had the game installed on my SSD so I switched my Origin Games folder to my other harddrive aaand...

SUDDENLY! I have combat music, banter, AND combat dialogue. What??!
The music still cuts out, and Val Royeaux is still eerily silent, but it's an improvement!

Now I don't know why this wasn't the very first thing I tried.

BUT this could all be conjecture and coincidence, so...

I politely request all PC players try this, if possible, to help me verify if this works for anyone else, pretty please. :)

If it does consistently then we can work on maybe figuring out a way to help the console players.

EDIT: To clarify, just switch where you have Inquisition installed to another harddrive. (IE: C to E, or whatever). It does not have to be an ssd, I was just saying my own setup.

I think this is the list of things we've tried.  If we can nail this down, we can have Jeff put it into the OP.

  • Switching party members
  • Staying on foot
  • Exploring new areas
  • Doing different quests
  • Progressing with the plot
  • Talking to everyone while at Haven/Skyhold
  • Waiting to get the mount quest done
  • Reinstalling
  • Repairing
  • Disabling Auto-save
  • Disabling Origin overlay
  • Disabling cloud saves
  • Changing audio settings (like TV to Night)
  • Turning on subtitles
  • Avoiding combat, just staying at camp
  • Playing the game normally (i.e no being idle)
  • Created a new world state for import (I did that and you can guess how well that worked.)
  • Using the depressing default world state
  • Zoning in and out of an area (like Haven to Hinterlands back to Haven back to the Hinterlands)
  • Using the quicksave as little as possible
  • Not having many characters
  • Have the latest drivers/updates for those of us that are PC
  • Avoiding some quests (some folks have reported losing banter after smashing the first red lyrium crystal, for instance)
  • Making sure that the voice sound was all the way up
  • Had our save files tested, either by folks like Murloc Knight or by Allan
  • Unchecking our journal/codex entries.  Basically, marking everything as read.  There has been some success with this, but posters are currently monitoring to see if will slip back into silence like it did with the other "fixes."
  • For PC users, changing our installation drives from regular to SSD or vice versa.  A very few have reported results, but that won't help the console folks.
  • Fast travel to camp, mount, dismount and rest.  There has been some reporting limited success.  Two-three banters at the most before slipping back into literally 3 or more hours of total silence and barely looping music.

I think that's the entire list, unless I've missing something.

@Bone  I don't have the game installed on a SSD drive and I can't switch installation folders.  My C:/ is used for more critical programs, since it isn't very big, and is SSD.  My alternate drive is not SSD and has over 1.5TB of room left.  However, my documents folder is exactly where it should be on the C drive (as I know that having your docs folder in a different spot can screw things up,) and I'm still having this issue.

i don't have a ssd but i have two hard drives. i could try that?

first i should probably see if the success i had with banter after checking the codex and journal entries is still there or if it has disappeared while i wasnt playing.

Odd that cloud saving would do that seeing as it doesnt happen until after the game is closed or before its launched.

I got a bit of banter switching around party members and heading to the hissing wastes. Mostly sera to herself and a bit with vivienne

Yes that's exactly what I meant, sorry! Haha. Just switching where the installation is.

I'm on PS4 and had been off the forums to avoid spoilers. I had suspected something was wrong when I got only one banter after hours with (my much-anticipated) Team YOLO (and similar rates with other party combinations including none at all with several), but I only just came up for air the other day and found out that interactive banter had not in fact been cut from the game at the last minute. :( 70-some hours and most of the crit-path in, and I'm probably going to stop playing until there's a patch. :(

Have all of the bullet points in the post above worked for some subset of players, or is it just a list of things that are definitely not the solution?

EDIT: I've had no problems with background music, though, for whatever that's worth.

Most of those just don't work for anyone, except where noted.

they have worked for some. however, they seem more temporary fixes -- i'm not sure about some of the newer ones, like the journal or the switching from ssd to hd, but that's because they're newer and we haven't had a chance to see if any success from them remains at all or if it just vanishes after a while and goes back to silence.

Going to give this a try now! I have a similar set up, would be very strange if it works though!

I've been messing around a bit more. Clearing journal/codex and fiddling with the audio, the music now seems to fade in and out more often, but I'm still not getting any banter, been trying for about 40 min.

@JK81 Sorry that you feel that way.  However, I don't think we need to "wake up."  If you feel that BioWare isn't going to be helpful, that's fine, but please don't tell people in the Feedback section of the forums to stop giving constructive feedback.

It's very strange that it even worked for me! It could be another false lead, though - I just wanted to share it in case it works for someone.

At this point I think we are just clutching at anything that might be a possible fix. We've tried so many things and nothing sticks. I'm stumped.

Honestly, everything in this thread (and everything I've experienced in the game—including some long dry spells of my own when it comes to banter) sounds exactly like RNG.

All these steps are placebo. You're not "fixing" anything; you're just getting lucky.

And there is no exploration music. There are short themes and melodies that will occasionally play, but most music is scripted and tied to events or specific areas.

Guys, seriously, WAKE THE F*** UP. Bioware is not going to do nothing about it. This is not even an issue suffered by the majority of players.

I for one suspect Bioware won't do anything about this either, but your response isn't very constructive. I also dare say this IS an issue suffered by the majority of players, just given the massive amount of replies we've gotten on this thread and elsewhere throughout our community. I know a lot of people, my personal friends included, think Bioware is just going to take our money and run, and given EA's history, I wouldn't be surprised. However, I know what a community can do, in lieu of a responsive development team, and I dare say that all of us struggling through this together will find a way to fix this. It just takes time, and we don't want to give them time because this game is SO GOOD we can't stand the idea of waiting to play it. It's unfortunate, it sucks, but I really do think it will get better sometime soon.

I just fiddled with my audio bars and bumped down my sound effects about thirty points, while leaving everything else at 100. I'm actually getting some music now, especially during combat, which is amazing! Still no banter, but is it possible that maybe sound effects take precedence for some reason?

See, here's the thing: We don't know how much of this is "lucky" and how much of this is actually tied to this error.   Conal obviously hasn't been reading the thread, so we're tossing ideas out there.  We're trying everything, because maybe it will help BioWare nail down this issue.

There should be music for Val Royaleux and I'm one of the people that has never heard of it outside of that first cutscene.   I'm also one of many posters in this thread that had no idea that music at Val R. was supposed to be playing outside of the cutscene.

I would buy the RNG excuse if it wasn't for folks completing the game at 90-100 hours with less than 20 banters.

until i cleared out my journal, i wasn't getting music. at all. i mentioned it multiple times in my testing post because i was logging the 30sec to 1m 30sec clips that would occasionally play, and which i usually go for hours without hearing at all. i wasn't expecting some sweeping theme that never stopped -- i don't think anyone else was, but they might have been.

the steps might be placebo, yes. but there's really nothing left to do but poke at the game and see if anything sticks, at least until bioware comes up with a patch, if it does at all. nothing wrong with trying.

as natashina mentioned, this certainly isn't rng with that little banter at 100 hours, however. there are a lot of problems here that everyone is united together in having, and if it is the rng then bioware needs to fix the rng (if you can do that :P) if this many players are having issues with it.

I'm also experiencing very little banter.

The Hinterlands appears to have what I assume to be the normal amount of banter, but for every other zones, I experience no banter, or maybe just one, I can't remember exactly. Definitely not what I feel I should experience.

I mean, it should pop up every 20-30 minutes, right? That'd feel right I think.
