I know people have said this a bit more eloquently, but it really is understandable that there are sound/quest bugs. In previous games, the music area triggers/combat soundest/party banter had nothing to compete with. There were, of course, quests - but nothing so remotely frequent. You could go thirty minutes to hours without completely anything. I never realised how different it was until I just happened to pick up a shard, pick up another shard, and then picked up some sort of herb  - that triggered three quest completion sounds in less than a minute. I set off my loot/radar ping to check something else. I ran into a spider den (that was a shock!) with about seven spiders. Killing them all it must have filled up my requisitions in one go, whilst I also happened to level up. There's a hell of a lot going on sound wise, along with all the questing/levelling the game needs to keep track of. (Normally that much isn't happening in the space of a few minutes - it was a bit of coincidence I ran into so much at once- but all the journal/codex talk made me think of it.)

I've had party banter trigger as combat starts as well, so sometimes the trigger hierarchy order must get mucked up. Or banter coincidentally starts to trigger just as combat happens to trigger.

It'd be quite a shame if the changes to DAI's game design (Skyrim-esque) over DA:O/DAII damaged such a core component of the series. Narrative and character development via the companions has always been the strength of the Dragon Age games. How do you fix something when the player can have so much going on at once? I'd be happy if the banter trigger was the first priority over any sound in the game to get it to work, but the devs understandably may not feel the same way.

Ugh, I'm 90+ hours in, and not only do my party members not talk, but when they do, they're repeating the same lines...I've heard the same convo between Varric/Cass like a billion times, but little else.

Make sure you put that into the dev's thread about this issue.  Conal very clearly stated that dialogue should not recycle in the same game.  It obviously is for you and for others, but it shouldn't be happening according to him.

If the devs can't replicated it, is it possible they could look at video evidence of the problem?

Spiritmuse put a link to his twitch recordings into the dev thread.  He's got hours of silence as part of his recordings.

Ugh. Reloaded my very first save to start my main campaing again after I beat the game and had some wonderful banter between Varric and Cas in the hinterlands. then I got sera and only had one, with Solas, in about 4 hours of exploring. Saaadface.

I didn't notice my lack of banter really, until I read this thread. I also have a noticeable lack of music. I don't think I've ever hear Skyhold's soundtrack. I did get music for a minute or so in the Hinterlands(after calling/dismissing mount), but it stopped abruptly after I autosaved.

I can't say if it's fixed my banter yet, but I went through the journal/codex and cleared everything - at the very end, I had four quests auto-complete! (Including that bloody drufallo. Buffalo. Whatever the bugger is.) It doesn't matter if it doesn't fix the banter issue, quests not completing is another problem in itself. I didn't realise it had even been a problem, as I thought they were always completing - always got the noise.

Poor ol' DAI seems like it's trying to pat its head whilst rubbing its stomach whilst trying to complete quests and keep track of herbs and banters and and combat and music aaaaaagh. I can very much see why it'd be having problems.

Well, I can tell you one region where I got banter, a good deal of it also.  Exalted Plains.  Running with Sera, Dorian and Cass...Dorian and Sera are constantly bantering back and forth.  Cassandra is quiet.  Given the amount of banter between the two snarks, I can imagine I am missing a huge amount in other areas.  I can't say it is *silent* but what I have here from Sera/Dorian tonight is easily 10x what I have received in TOTAL in my playthrough so far.  I love the banter, so I hope there is more hiding in there somewhere! =D  It's been the only thing that made looking for this last letter for a quest tolerable lol

I have to stop getting ahead of my self - I just spent two minutes watching quests auto-complete, they hadn't finished from earlier. It was a good 20+ quests, they kept going and going and going. Sir Woolsley! Champions of the Just! The horse quest! Things from the very beginning of the game that had never completed! It seems I got the experience at the time, but the quests never completed.

i think they complete at the time, but when you read the 'quests completed' log they complete again for some reason? as far as i can tell it's only the ones that have the 'new' entry icon in the completed log, but not every quest that goes there has it and i don't understand what causes some to complete twice while others only complete once.

I sure wish I could get Cass and Varric to say ANYTHING to each other. So far only Sera and Vivienne banter much at all.

I had 159 hours of gameplay on my main and maybe three party conversations, one being in the very beginning when solas asks about the dalish and the other about the fade-rift-slowing-time-at-the-entrance-of-redcliffe. I only found out it's supposed to be a bug when i came to the forums to complain they had gotten rid of party banter.

OKAY, SO, I did one last thing out of desperation before I was going to quit for the day and it...actually...seems like I might have found something?

I play on PC, I've got two harddrives, an SSD and just a normal drive. I had the game installed on my SSD so I switched my Origin Games folder to my other harddrive aaand...

SUDDENLY! I have combat music, banter, AND combat dialogue. What??!
The music still cuts out, and Val Royeaux is still eerily silent, but it's an improvement!

Now I don't know why this wasn't the very first thing I tried.

BUT this could all be conjecture and coincidence, so...

I politely request all PC players try this, if possible, to help me verify if this works for anyone else, pretty please. :)

If it does consistently then we can work on maybe figuring out a way to help the console players.

EDIT: To clarify, just switch where you have Inquisition installed to another harddrive. (IE: C to E, or whatever). It does not have to be an ssd, I was just saying my own setup.

When you say combat music, like in random encounters? Video evidence would be awesome.

Ahh, that would make sense. It definitely wasn't every quest, it was just a bizarrely large amount of them!

I did get some new Sera/Dorian banter, and some new music I haven't heard before from the Oasis. Could be related, could understandably be coincidence.

I was going to play tonight and try the journal trick, but I think I need a nap first.  Didn't sleep well today, but I'll try this for myself later.  Could be luck, could be a legit idea.  Either way, I'm down to try after some sleep.

Uninstalling the game, then reinstalling WITHOUT the Voice Over pack seems to have helped me.

You can apparently see if it installed here - C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\__Installer\DLC.

(Thou shalt always make a backup...)

Also, it seems conversations trigger in new areas instead of ones previously visited. Maybe that is a contributing factor?

Ambient conversations of NPCs seems to cut off party banter too. <_<

The codex / journal / item thing seems to work for me so far, it's hard to say yet though. I have been playing normally on a completely new character. Just got Sera and she already had 3 conversations with Varric and one with Cass (in around 30-40 minutes of gameplay) Prior to recruiting her the conversations were a bit patchy, but nothing too horrid.

This is probably luck, just as it has been with all other "fixes" we tried.

Music is playing very often, I assume this is how it should be. Combat dialogue is sparse (although I don't know how often that should happen and how it should sound) and combat music has been... strange (same thing here though: no idea how this should function) Still no music in Val R.

Will see how it goes, but I'm not feeling very optimistic about our latest "fix." I wonder how many more we can cook up before we simply give up.

I find changing the audio back and forth from TV to headphones or whatever makes the music start to play again, but nothing makes these characters talk.

Wow. Seems like DAI has all kinds of audio bugs. I was just going to come in and say that I very rarely get companion banter. It seems to only be Vivienne that gets to say anything. I should probably start keeping track of who exactly trips banter.

It isn't bothering me too much, since I usually beat the game, then go on the wiki and binge on everyone's transcribed banter, but it is still a little too early for that. Have the dev's given us any updates recently?

Reporting in to say that:

  • Journal trick seems to have helped A LOT on my 80+ hour save. Got 2 banters in about 24 minutes, including combat dialogue (Killing blow only) and environmental comments as well.
  • Music cues come steadily every 2-3 minutes
  • Combat music happens with dragons but not so much in other fights
  • No music or banter in Val R. yet

Once I've finally beaten the game I'll roll a new Inquisitor and keep the Journal reading in mind.

There's DEF. something wrong with the journal though.

  • It keeps tracking finished quests
  • It "completes" them multiple times
  • It doesn't lock them in as complete unless you re-read the updated journal

This COULD prevent story related banter from firing because the scripts they're tied to aren't activated and when they finally are by reading the journal, later quests take precedence and loads of banter are shut away without ever being heard. I.E. The Fade quest banters are happening to me NOW, that was the last main quest I completed before going back to side questing.

Devs, check the Journal. Test scripting references and triggers. Just a shot in the dark from me though.

I tried the journal trick tonight and like all these fixes, it seemed to work temporarily (2 banters in the first 20 or so minutes) and then everything went back to silence again. Sigh. Right now I'm getting background music in really short bursts that last under 10 seconds.
