Just so people know: I'm fairly certain the Templars to the West video is completely unrepresentative of typical gameplay for even bug-free people. Music seems to work properly in my game and that area (Lake Luthias) features constant battle music but only during that quest (it's the area where the mages and Templars are fighting just outside the refugee camp in the Hinterlands). Once the quest is resolved, the battle music does not play anymore. It is one of the only areas I've found in the game that plays music constantly: people shouldn't be watching that video thinking that this is what the game is like for people who don't have the music bug.

An idea I had is if someone could make a video where they can show what it's like for us in Val R.  Perhaps if they showed that next to a video that is silent in the city next to one with the music, that might help push things in the right direction.   :)

Ah, ok, I didn't think about that. Thank you for the clarification, I'll try to look for a better and more representative comparison :)

No problem, though it was interesting that the VGFAQ video seemed to be on Xbox 360 and didn't have music. So maybe last-gen consoles aren't supposed to have all the same scripted music that other versions have in certain areas. Or, like you thought, VGFAQ just had the music turned off.

Nah, it isn't anything like that. I'm playing on PC with a good rig and I get the same.

Same here, it allows me to play on tweaked ultra so I doubt it might be that issue.

This afternoon's playthrough saw four bits of banter in a bit over two and a half hours, one of which appears to have been from a contextual trigger.  Two of the remaining three pieces of banter took place immediately after each other.  Finally, at one stage, Cass began what I think was going to be another piece of banter, but the audio cut off after the first word.

There were also five pieces of contextual commentary provided by companions, two of which appeared to be bugged and probaby shouldn't have occured.  Characters occasionally speak during battle (and quite commonly declare it's over) including the inquisitor.

I traveled across three zones and never used a mount, though I did indulge in fast travel.  I have subtitles on, but they never appear when companions banter or comment.  Worth nothing is that I don't usually bring Varric along (as a dwarf rogue, I find another rogue in a party to be too micro-manage-y).  I do, however, usually roll with Cass and Bull - in large part because the devs at PAX AUS talked up their banter.  Their sole  banter to date was when Bull has told Cass he liked hitting things, and she agreed that it was good :(

One thing I am wondering about is my tendency to spam the search key as I run to flag resources.  When Cass's (possible) banter bugged, I had just hit the search button.  I might try later on restraining myself from being quite so spamy and see if that helps.

Exact timings are below.  May contain slight spoilers for Hinterlands/Storm Coast/Crestwood

In Val Royeaux I have the classical theme play over the loading screen for 20-30 seconds. Once the area is loaded the theme continues to the end, but it doesn't loop and I don't think it's supposed to. Since the theme lasts just over a minute I hear about 30-40 seconds of it while in the area, then it stops. There is a bard in the cafe in Val Royeaux and the theme music would conflict with her singing.

I really don't think the theme is supposed to loop in Val Royeaux since it's not exactly background music and would get a bit overbearing and drown out background NPC chatter. I could be wrong and maybe I am bugged, but I think people might be misinterpreting what the music is supposed to be like in Val Royeaux.

Fair enough and good point.  :)

We should really take this to the Music Bug thread, but do you mean you get no music in Lake Luthias even when the Templars and mages are still fighting there? Because after they are done fighting the music stops in my game in that area and I'm sure it's supposed to. If you're not getting music there even when they are still fighting then that's definitely a bug (not that you need me to tell you that I'm sure).

Since the music there is scripted and not random, it might at least be a lot more straightforward for the devs to bug-test that area.

Yeah, on the other hand the only time I heard the theme in game is when I first got to val royeaux... Subsequent visits had no music at all...

The latter, I asked on their video and got this answer:

"we turn off the music on all videos to avoid copyright problems. But, we also experienced some issues when the music is on."

I'll try to upload my own gameplay, since looking through YouTube channels for comparisons was probably a bad idea. I don't know what sort of audio settings other people are using.

Sorry I'm not trying to dig it in, I just think it's important people know what the music is supposed to be like so that they know they're not just imagining things. I have problems with party banter and sometimes I wish people who don't have banter problems could be more specific about what the banter is supposed to be like.

Tried out the journal trick and it I've had four banters so far. Dorian and Blackwall just had their first conversation in my 55+ hour game.

Says something that I woke up at 5:30 am, and the first thing I do is check this thread. I had hoped there'd be some good news but... Sighs. Thanks to everyone for listing the ideas and the methods that worked for some! I am trying changing the disk right now, this time I'll do a detailed written gameplay (which will probably be 'user suffers two hours of maddening silence!).

Sorry to bother if it's already there, but did you put these on the list?

- Repair Game

- Disconnect Origin (from the Origin software itself)

- Uncheck on Origin Settings (agin, from the origin software itself)

The last two gave me the initial music cue, though nothing much, but it seemed like an improvement.

Clearing the journal resulted in (finally) hearing background music (~15 seconds snippets with 3-4 minutes intervals).
When battle starts, background music doesn't stop which makes for an interesting effect :/ No other combat music, but followers started saying things when the battle is finished.
(I also cleared the codex, but I feel like the journal gave me the music, since it started playing when I was only halfway through clearing the journal)
That didn't restore banter, however: I got one conversation immediately after loading a save with cleared journal, and after that nothing (walked all the way across Hinterlands 3 times, one environment remark and that's it)

Then I tried account settings. "Share usage data" didn't change anything at all, but unchecking "Always log in" worked, more or less: I got three banters with 10 mins intervals in Hinterlands, 2 banters + environment remark with 30-35 mins intervals in the Mire (that was probably the first time I got banter there at all), changed party, got another 2 banters with about 30 mins intervals, then 2 banters with ~20 min intervals on the Storm Coast.

For Val Royaux, I think you are not bugged when the whole theme plays once fully, each time you enter the area. Then it is over and doesn't loop.

For bugged people : the theme plays once, the first time you enter Val Royaux (with the quest, chantry representative, templars and all). Then no more music ever for the whole playthrough.

Was this confirmed by the developers?

Seems a little bit odd to me, since you can spend quite some time in the game and have to visit some areas more than once.

Did you guys watch bioware's storm coast gameplay video? There are 2 parts of it and I watched both just to check if there are banters and I don't think I heard any.

No :/ If only developers could confirm anything. We are all in the dark, trying to figure things out.

I just played for around 3 hours ... Most of it collecting shards and closing rifts in the Hinterlands.

- I picked up Iron Bull as a party member for the first time and wandered around with him and got no party dialogue whatsoever.

-Now I have no music in Val Royeaux at all

-The music in the Hinterlands usually starts when I enter a different area and the name of it pops up, then fades away after literal 3 seconds or so never to be heard from again.

-I tried clearing my journal. To my surprise when I went over my completed quests to make sure they were cleared and left my journal again, I got about twenty notifications for completing the quests. I don't understand that. When you complete a quest, it should simply finish, right? I mean, I got the rewards and it registered the first time that I finished them. Yet going into the journal and highlighting each completed quest makes the notification that I completed it reappear.

-Sadly, clearing my journal didn't help. I only got two banters in an hour from Cassandra and Sera, although I suppose this is slightly better than before since I'd never heard from Sera. Interestingly, the banters popped up respectively after I finished two quests (sealing rifts). Then it was quiet for another hour and no success with bringing in new party members.

-I tried mounting, dismounting, resting. None of it works

-The audio went completely mute about 2 times during combat, with no ambient noise of footsteps or voices. After I went into my radial menu it fixed it.

These bugs are excessive ... I might have to return the game if it's not fixed.

One thing I notice is that my CPU is under heavy load with this game. I have a high-end PC so it should be able to handle it. Nevertheless, it's quite high up there in CPU usage. Could it be script lag??

I changed my audio settings to TV and that seems to have fixed it, maybe. I got several banters and music while running around the Emerald Graves earlier today.

Ah, well I had the Val Royeaux music play when I entered the city for the FIRST time, but since then it hasn't played at all. So I guess it's only supposed to play once. Aright. I can deal with that.

I'll do a Hinterlands test this evening once I have more time [looks guiltily at mountain of paperwork]

I believe it's supposed to play EVERY time you enter the city, it just won't play on repeat, ie after playing when you enter the city, it will stop. But it will play every time you enter. That's my understanding. There is a YouTube video earlier in the thread that shows this....

I also tried unchecking share usage data etc. and it didn't help restore either the music or banter.

Have the majority of these problems too, playing on Xbox One.
Problems seemed to start around getting my first horse, like a lot of people.
13 hours in and almost no banter since that point.
Lots of background music and themes before, now just tweeting birds with the odd musical riff when I enter a new area.
Val Royeaux problem also present - had music on the first visit, now complete silence.

Using the journal lcearing tricks suddenly gave me more background music for a brief period, but it soon disappeared again, and none of my characters bantered.

So I never post on this place, ever, BUT I had this glitch big time and was freaking out. I'd played a solid 80-120 hours on a couple files and when I stumbled on this thread I realized why I was so bored during the smaller missions. NO one talked.

Tried the audio fixes and that didn't help. Out of desperation I uninstalled and reinstalled the game and uninstalled the deluxe edition stuff, just in case that was clashing somehow. AND SOLAS AND VARRIC TALKED TO ONE ANOTHER. They've NEVER done that in any of my playthroughs aside from scripted stuff. So far, in about four hours, I've gotten around five little ambient events, which is more than I used to get in like 12 hours.

Moral of the story: uninstall and reinstall and maybe uninstall the deluxe edition stuff too. I have no idea if that's what the issue is but it worked for me, and with luck it'll stay fixed. Hopefully this helps.

EDIT: I also never had any ambient music either, but now I do.

EDIT 2: Got 2 more party banter events in 30 minutes, even after I got my horse (which someone said seems to be a point where people start having issues).
