From the reddit thread, as I think this is fairly important.

At this point I'm starting to think that the lack of banter REALLY is correlated to the lack of music.

agreed. when i had no banter i had absolutely no music -- not for combat, not ambient environmental music. i actually still have none in val royeaux, but banter is playing regularly right now -- three triggered in the last 20 - 30 minutes -- and every 1 to 3 minutes i'm getting little bits of music that i NEVER heard with any regularity before; maybe once when i loaded up the game, but that faded away to dead silence very quickly. i am also getting combat music, even before my group notices enemies and pulls their weapons out.

I haven’t really seen much of that. One or two people chiming in that it seems to work for them.

Edit: …And just as I type that, I see. Replying over there. I don’t read reddit for a multitude of reasons.

(Edit2: I’m actually kinda irritated that (evidently) their own Feedback forum isn’t the primary place to actually contact them.)

It seems certain parts of Reddit accuse the Bioware forums of being toxic/cesspool, which is a *hilarious* claim from 4chan's cousin.

This also proves that yes, we are supposed to be hearing banter at least 4-5 time in the span of an hour. At least.

Uh, wait, they have developers walking through the debugging there? That’s great.

Not great for those who read the official forums, you know, but in general.

He is a regular user. I should have said that, I'm sorry.

I just thought it was useful information.

Ah, OK :) There must be a way to access the scripting engine then… do you have a link, I’d like to take a look?

They find all the talk of romance and such in the character threads to be annoying I suppose. Which is fine.

Calling them 4chan's cousin is a little much though. The place is fine. Some weird jokes. But I've seen few enough bigots.

Well updated my realtek audio drives for the second time after clearing my pc and finally the music feels like it's working as it should. I think. I get a lot of ambient music everywhere I go and rarely any longer pauses, though Skyhold is still silent. The banter is still missing (normal settings, 3 hours running around doing quests), so I don't think the music and the banter are connected. I'd still rather have a fix for the banter bug rather than for the music.

Couldn't they decrease the time between banters and see if this helps or  add some obvious trigger locations that we can click on.  I really hate missing half the story.

I see a lot of diddling with the PC version—none of you are forgetting that this happens with the console versions as well, right?

Remember: This has not been considered a 'problem' officially, but it has been noticed by console players too. It could be they just fumbled with the banter; something noticed only by the sheer number of people playing the game for extended periods of time after release.

 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Quick report:

Played pretty much normally last night.  Did a few quests, recruited some agents and farmed some deepstalkers and dragonlings.  I did clear my journal and codex (got a few quest completes notifications to previously finished quests as well,) and I did do the mount/dismount/rest routine as I got into camps.  I wasn't going back to camps anymore often than I needed to in order to either heal or just get to an area quicker.   I didn't futz with the audio settings either.  I also quicksaved as I normally do, which is to say frequently.

I played for a little over two hours.  I had new party members as well, so I put Iron Bull into my party when he was recruited last night.  I bombed around with Varric/Solas/Iron Bull.  For the record, I love Iron Bull as a two-handed tank in battle.  Anyway, in that time, minus about 10 minutes to go pick up Vivienne (so around an hour and 45 minutes, and that was just before I called it for the night) I had one banter.  It was between Varric and Iron Bull.  Otherwise, mostly quiet outside of occasionally looping music.

The only instance of battle music kicking in was when I started to get a little too close to that dragon in northeastern Hinterlands.  I did not get close enough to aggro her (thankfully, as I'm level 9 and would not have survived her,) but it was enough to get the music to kick in.   Otherwise, no battle music, and no hints of music in Val R. later when I went to go window shop for new gear (I'm a bit broke and a bit underleveled for it at the moment.)  Not even a few seconds of music before fading out either, as what happens when I exit the Chantry in Haven.

I will honestly say that while this bug/glitch is rather depressing, I am still having great fun with the game.  In fact, I stumbled across a choice I didn't notice before, and got more agents this time as a result.  The banter I do get is very savored and oftentimes, extremely funny.   I'm looking forward to this issue getting taken care of, as I know it'll make future completions of the game that much sweeter.

This is exactly what I was thinking! Why not just increase the banters' rate or add triggers? Sound easier to do than trying to identify a bug if they cannot replicate it.

Okay, after some more time testing realize i only have banter after fast travelling to camps/zones. Sometimes 2 times in five minutes or so, after that nothing anymore. Tried that by running around/staying idle for almost 2 hours.
Had some seconds of music in the hissing wastes again (hissing wastes is ironically the most "lively" area for me) in the middle of nowhere. The only thing which is working fine is the music during dragon fights.

If there is a problem with the engine (someone said that in some sripttesting on reddit the banters triggered, but weren't audible), increasing the rate won't do anything...

Had a few more after a few hours attempts today. Actually got Blackwall and Vivienne to banter, of all people, then oh, 50-65 minutes later Varric and Sera. Yee haw, working as intended for sure. Two banters in three hours.

After I got to Skyhold and I talked to everyone, I started getting a lot more banter in my characters.

Previously, even if I tried talking to everyone, they barely spoke to one another.  Now, they can't shut up :P

I think this is part of the problem. I had plenty in the Western Approaches. I have times I fire up the game and I get lot of conversations and other times I get very little. It might be some odd mix of party members, areas and time of the game that affect how many conversations you get but I don't get consistent silence but it seems like the game session is either chatty or silent for me.

My party members seem to say more if I'm stood/in the same area for some time. I was at the Mercenary fortress in the Hinterlands, it's the most conversation I've had since being in game. I had about three different conversations in the space of 10 minutes. Otherwise, while I'm roaming around or what have you, i'm lucky to have 1-2 an hour. I'm on PS4 btw

On the very rare occasion I do hear combat music, this is an example of what plays.

The music in this game is very beautiful. It's too bad we don't hear it very much! Now I just think back to Dragon Age 2 when the music would cue perfectly and the banters would flow very organically. A lot of people give that game crap, but at least it didn't feel lonely.

This is random encounters or boss/quest fights?

Skyhold's introduction alters many variables. You aren't the first person seemingly cured after its acquisition. Congrats, I hope it continues. For others the bug manifests AFTER Skyhold, so that is no bueno. And for many more (myself included) it doesn't appear to do anything.

PS4 here.

My party is quite silent almost everywhere, but in the emerald graves, near Redcliff, and in the Oasi. (that's the most talkative place). The music play very little, only when Dragons are there.

I've notice the problem started after leaving Heaven and going to Skyhold. Even the Coast was ok before. :/

This. I have diligently noted down every time I got banter - on the PS4 version, I though everything was dead silent but now on the PC I got banter almost exactly every 10 minutes (tested Hinterlands and Crestwood, after aquiring Skyhold). Until I went to the Western Approach that is - no banter whatsoever. I thought the bug had finally hit me, too, until I went to a different area - banter again, about every 10 minutes.

Strange.
