Okay I found something kinda odd in my last stream. I was messing with my sound settings and decided to mute all sound effects, have voice audio at 50% and music at 100%. I completed some quests with no audio other than people talking and smatterings of music that lasted a few seconds each and then I placed a Landmark and to my surprise I heard the "quest complete/Landmark Placed" sound effect twice and the same happened when I marked a bridge to be fixed in a mission. Which I find somewhat odd. It's probably nothing but after testing a couple of others it seems like that tone is under music in the audio settings, Just another point of interest I guess.

Link to the highlight (I must have accidentally muted my mic at some point so I was prattling on to myself for an hour for nothing xP)

http://www.twitch.tv...oblin/c/5587630

00:00-00:50 first two instances

07:00-07:30 Music muted

(19:40-20:45 Weird bleeding pyramid easter egg?)

31:00-31:40 Recreation of first instances

33:15-33:45 Muted music again

Hey everyone. I have the same problem with missing banter and music. I get some, like maybe once an hour or something. I've replayed the first ten hours a couple of times now and I notice that I get the same banter and the same music over and over. Maybe this problem we all seem to have isn't so much a programing error, rather it has something to do with the files missing.

Those of you who play on PC, is it possible for you to check and see if the sound-files are actually there or not? I play on Xbox 360 myself so sadly I have no way of checking this myself.

If it is a case of missing files maybe Bioware could just make them available for downloading?

Hi, I have a PC dvd version, tried messing with files and unfortunately it seems our problem isn't about them. Even when I copied all of them from last dvd into core directory, nothing changed. And yes, some "music" and "sound" named files are among them.

Ah, damn. Oh well, it was worth a shot. Thanks for letting me know.

Always willing. Yeah, I think it was a good idea itself to check it, actually it helped me with other EA - distributed game (newest Fifa).

If there is a problem with the engine (someone said that in some sripttesting on reddit the banters triggered, but weren't audible), increasing the rate won't do anything...

But I've the subtitles always "on", so if they weren't audible, I should have been able to read them.

BTW I've recently realized, our checking off remark (journal and codex fix) should probably refer also to equipment. All in all, these weird stars are visible there unless you click on the line.

I checked off everything there but I didn't see any difference banter wise. Eeh.

I made a video with my save, and Teagle's save showcasing the fact that he has Val Royeaux and Skyhold music and I do not. I'll make other videos tonight to document my lack of banter, combat music, combat... grunts, zone music, etc.

Thank you very much. I didn't knew there was any music in Skyhold. o.O

I’ve started recording on Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv...past_broadcasts. There’s about an hour and a half from Emerald Graves now; I feel like I had a touch more luck after the Journal clearing trick, but have no idea about the soundscape otherwise. Someone want to peek at it?

Time from the start:

0 h 08 min | IB + Viv | Right after changing party in camp. Topic was something related to events from the Mage quest. (Backlog?)

0 h 10 min | Cass | Comment about the Dales
0 h 30 min | IB | Comment when clicking Astrarium
0 h 39 min | IB + Viv | Banter right after a fight

(0 h 45 min – 1 h 5 min quest area, quest-related dialogue.)

(1 h 15 min, rest, party swap, standing around)

1 h 25 min | Cass | Comment about the Dales (a different one)

1 h 29 min | IB + Sera | Banter right after another party swap

(Fight in a camp here somewhere, but not a quest)

1 h 56 min | Var + D | Banter while exploring

So my prediction that reinstalling fixed things might have been a bit premature. It's definitely better than it was, and I'm trying all the workarounds but sometimes, after I've been in a zone for a long period of time the banters just stop. Like... I was in the Forbidden Oasis last night and the banter was triggering fairly regularly (once fairly soon after another banter) and then eventually (after maybe an hour/two hours or so??) my guys just... stopped talking to each other. They'd say stuff about the environment though, still.

Yeah, this is exactly what my game sounds like. Just background noises. There's a reason why I hate going to Val R....

Did another two hours of playing. Clearing journals and codex, off to the Exalted Plains. And within about two and a half hours, I got two banter! Two! That's a record for me. It was in my still-in-progress save.

One banter happened after walking and fighting for an hour (I took the camp of the Freemen and closed the rifts around it), on my way into that Fort in the middle. Right after I defeated the corpses and the arcane horror- bam, Viv and Sera have a fight. And it was in context, as they talked about Halamshiral (just completed it).

Then I went off to get Viv's Wyvern heart and defeated the dragon there as well. Nobody talked the whole way, except Bull who remarked that he is standing in a lot of water. Right when I finished the dragon fight, Viv started talking about how Bull needs a new eyepatch. It sounded a bit out of context, so I assume some of the lines were cut off, as the timing of the banter was just very off.

Music wise, a bit of music while not in combat, primarily at the beginning of my play. Then a bit of combat music at the beginnig of the dragon fight, then silence there as well. No combat yelling from companions, my character is the only one shouting.

So reinstalling fixed nothing.

Just played for a little over one hour, first time to the Western Approach, so everything was new. I'm 17 hours in and switched my party a bit, so the banter surely isn't depleted.

Got banter once in those ~70 minutes. It was between Cassandra and Sera and it seemed like very basic stuff, like what I'd expect to occur shortly after I recruit Sera, which was maybe 8 hours ago.

Didn't feel natural.

Also, as a side note, I don't seem to get any music unless right after combat. It's like no music for 10 minutes, combat (no music), combat ends, music starts. Then a minute later it stops again.

Okay Bioware obviously isn't seeing the problem, my party is following the trend of banter happening every like..  30 minutes, and then not at all. Even when I go to new areas they rarely talk.

The background music also stays silent for long periods of time.

Hi all, after following this topic while out of town for the holiday, I'll be in front of my computer tonight and ready to test some of the workarounds to see if I can trigger some banter in my main, 35 hour save file. Don't know that my testing could really be all that useful after 75 pages of testing, but if anyone is interested in what happens if you try a particular workaround on a completely un-messed-with save, do let me know.

My son is putzing around on the Storm Coast while I clean. He is mostly just jumping off cliffs/swimming and laughing at the noises they make while they die. I'm mentioning this because I have heard 5 banters in the last hour while I am cleaning. Sera has spoken more to his character than she did to mine in 70 hours of gameplay where I always had her in the party. I give up trying to figure out what's causing this. I suspect the people guessing that banter is assigned lower priority or getting messed up as the game processes things are correct. But uh, there's another "idea" for people who want to try to trigger banter.

If the devs can't reproduce this issue, can they post the systems they are testing on with the specs? Is there somewhere where we can submit our command prompt systeminfo? (I know that won't help the console folks...)

I mean, my point is, what do they need to know for troubleshooting purposes?

I'm really kinda annoyed but how they say "silence is goooolden" but seriously my brother also got the game and he has no bug, I did the unmarking of everything and I believe it made thing a bit better, more music and some banter.

Don't know if another bug but sometimes in menu or choices I can't click anything with my mouse I need to do it with the keyboard.

Just wanted to add my experience (deluxe version on 360):

I didn't know there was a glitch but had thought to myself, while playing the game, that it was a shame they'd obviously cut back on party banter.  I assumed they were spreading the content out over a wider area.  I had heard perhaps 10 instances of banter in my 55 hour game.  Now, that's a guess and could be affected by perception, but it's one of my favourite parts and when it did fire off, I'd always stop to listen to it, so I doubt I'm underestimating by that much.  It was something I considered rare.  I also wasn't getting consistent background music, though of course, I didn't know it.

Having tried the journal/codex/online settings, I noticed a huge, immediate improvement.  I started getting regular banter, usually every 10 or so minutes (though sometimes as much as 20 mins or as few as 5) as well as background music (lasting for 30 seconds or so every 3ish minutes as others have described).

I tested the areas I had access to at that point: The Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Fallow Mire, Crestwood, Exalted Plains and Western Approach.  Western Approach gave background music but no banter (again as others have experienced).  All the other places gave both background music and banter.  I played for about three hours, but about 40 minutes of that was in the Western Approach, which as noted, still seems broken.  In the 2 hours 20 I spent in the other areas, I got 10 pieces of banter.

At this point, even if I'm wildly underestimating my previous 50+ hours there's obviously something odd going on.

Anyway, I did all that last night.

Tonight I've logged back on and played some more to see if it had stopped working.  I'm pleased to report that having tested Fallow Mire and the Hinterlands, they still provide banter at regular intervals.  I haven't gone more than 20 minutes without any banter and it's usually more frequent.  I also just opened up Emprise du Lion and my party is very chatty.

I haven't gotten to Forbidden Oasis, Emerald Graves or the Hissing Wastes yet.

I am not getting music in Val Royeaux.

I am not getting specific combat music.

I am very sporadically getting combat dialogue.  My party do make noises when they're lit on fire, etc., (and have done throughout my playthrough) but I don't generally get comments about going down or the combat itself.  I've noticed a slight increase in this since the fix, but only slight.  As in maybe two or three instances.  I don't know if that's because of the fights I've been in or if it's because it's still somewhat glitched.

Someone mentioned they found dialogue died off after a few hours.  That hasn't been happening to me, but I also haven't gamed for more than ~4 hours since applying this fix.

However, as long as this holds, I am now happy with the state of the game.  I consider one non-bantery area and the loss of a few combat phrases acceptable in the way the game-wide party silence absolutely was not.

Thank you so much to all the people on this thread who worked to find a solution that is working for at least some of us.

Semi-related musing since I can’t play right now; I wonder how things would go if you rarely changed your party? As in what the expected experience is if after the first 10–20 hours you’ve basically found the team you go with and then do a let’s say 100-hour playthrough with more or less the same 3–4 people all the time.

It’s mostly curiosity for me, but given that I’m playing a DW Rogue, if I specifically wasn’t trying to include everybody, I’d either constantly be leaving out Cole (another DW Rogue) and either Iron Bull (or at least I haven’t been able to make him stay alive as a tank) or Varric and Sera (if you prefer IB over ranged damage).

That's kind of the problem - it seems they don't even have a ballpark guess of where that could be coming from.

At this point I'd set up a webpage if I were them, where people experiencing the issue could put in various data and then look for correlations. Like, maybe it's down to class choice, quest order - things like that.

Come to think of it, I'd even go a step further by letting people upload their saves and writing a simple parser for for those save files to extract all relevant information into a DB and run analytics on that.

I had various party constellations in my first playthrough. Now in my second one, I mainly stick to Varric, Iron Bull or Cassandra, and Viv or Dorian. I'm a mage. I got more banter in this playthrough, but not much more than in my last. It's 10 vs. 15 times of banter right now, so not significantly different. So sticking to one party didn't really impacted my game.

At this point I feel like I'm spending more time shooting at the banter cave than actually playing the game. But I'm determined to at least get the banters about relationships between companions that trigger the extra dialogue later, before my game is over.

One of the reasons I'm so sure that things changed after the fix applied is that I played my first 50 hours with close variations on a core team of Cassandra, Solas with Varric, Sera or Iron Bull as the third person almost always.  And yet, after the fix was applied ti was Cass and Solas who started firing a lot of banter, followed by Cass and Varric, making me think there was a lot that I should have heard early in the game, when that's your mandatory party, that I never did?

(I know you weren't specifically asking as it related to the glitch, but semi-related to your semi-related musing...?  :P)

My game seems to be getting more messed up as time goes on. Now I have absolutely no music anywhere - Exalted Plains , Hinterlands, Val. R, etc. No combat music ever. Very infrequent banter. Even ambient noises cut out sometimes. Sometimes the bards will sing, other times it's just subtitles with no sound. So weird.
