This is probably nothing, but this game does use Denuvo for its anti-piracy protection. Denuvo is made by the same guys who made SecureRom, which was a terrible anti-piracy measure that messed even with legit buyers. Worst cases were it damaging motherboards and optical drives.

Lords of the Fallen is another recent game that uses Denuvo as well, and that game is a buggy mess as well. Who knows, this might have something to do with it.

I tried out the Western Approach for the first time - I had no banter after 2hrs (with party members who had never spoken together before), and the music was incredibly sporadic (only 3 cues?) - but there was at least combat banter. In my experience, it once again seems like music + party member combat soundset = party banter. If you're missing out on one of them - no dice. (Got hit with the Here Lies The Abyss glitch, too, so much fun has been had this morning.)

Popped back into Val Royeux - no music again, and still no banter.

Looking forward to another night of playing - err, experimenting. Gonna try starting a new game (PS4) and keeping track of success/failure of banter and music. Futile? Maybe. But if they manage to fix it, I'll keep a very early save so I can experience the game as it should have been. I'll report back any results.

Please don't bring Denuvo into this.  For one, I don't think that has anything to do with anything when it comes to this bug.  Otherwise, this would be affecting just about everyone.  As it is stands, it seems to be severely impacting only a small percentage of players.  For another, threads that talk about Denuvo get locked usually, so let's not go there, please.

I've been trying to keep my journal/codex/inventory 'clean' (make sure there aren't any quests, texts or objects with stars in them) and yesterday I had banter in the Forbidden Oasis. Today I had banter in the Exalted Plains, and I even had combat music and combat sounds I haven't had before. I suddenly felt very spoiled with all that glorious audio.

Securerom didn't affect everyone though when that was causing problems. But fair enough on not wanting to explore that possibility. I doubt its that anyway.

Do you guys have music in Emerald Graves? Just got here the first time and it's amazing.

Hey everyone. Time for another conspiracy theory. I know lots of us are having problems not just with dialogue, but also with music. Someone mentioned that maybe the script allows something to take precedence over dialogue. So as an experiment I've turned music and sound effects to zero, dialogue to 100. I've gotten three banters so far, and while it may be yet another fluke, it's something I feel like sharing. Mind you, it makes the game... eerie, to say the least, but if you really want to hear your boys chat, it might be worth a try.

Those reddit users who have been looking into the game's code looked like they were onto something. Hopefully the devs are onto that.

I wonder if there’s supposed to be non-scripted banter in quest areas? I was in

Okay, I just had something weird happen.

I did most of the Fallow Mires things with a party I never had together (VIv, Bull and Cole) and I had banter! Twice in the hour and a half  I was in there. Combat sounds were there as well  (I heard Cole yell something), no combat music though, except for the Avvar fight at the end. But other music happened.

Journal and codex were cleaned up.

Then I went to the Western Approach, had music. Did some exploring (no banter, with background music), before I entered the Tevinter Ruin in the north. Had people comment on stuff (rarely happens), no banter, no combat music, except for the fight at the end. That might be intentional though.

After I exited the ruin and finished up that part of the Western Approach, things quieted down. No sounds in combat, except for the usual atmospheric sounds. No banter and no music. Maybe it is surpressed for that area, but I don't really know.

I kept my journal clean throughout, fiddled with audio settings, but I didn't get banter back.

At least the temporary fixes work on occasion. I know that banter twice in an hour and a half is not a lot, but it's something. Cannot really place the banter in terms of where it is supposed to happen, because it was so generic (Bull asking Viv about her favorite type of magic, and Cole asking Viv about whether she feels spirits when casting magic), so it might have been from anywhere.

I suddenly got the Val Royeaux and the Skyhold music, but:
  • using the war room kills it
  • judging someone kills it
  • so far these are the only things that could kill it (I tried reloading, crafting, shopping, travelling, mounts, combat, conversations - both cinematic and not)
Skyhold background music behaved very strangely though:
  • it was the same very short (less than a minute, I think) piece of music looped infinitely - not like in Val Royeaux, where I got a long theme song that wasn't looped.
  • it continued to play even during cinematic conversations with advisors (which was kind of mood-breaking), still the same short piece looped
  • when I was judging the avvar chief, it was still playing, but it stopped looping, played the final theme resolution as I finished judging, and then music disappeared completely
  • when I enter the tavern, music fades and I hear the bard instead; music comes back when I exit the tavern. Which is a surprisingly normal behavior considering the rest.

I had Solas and he didn't say a peep. But I have the bug, so maybe somebody without might have a better answer.  ;)

What Skyhold music are you guys referring to? Not the "drums of Skyhold", right? Because that's not meant to play anywhere except the War Table.

Okay so last night I did the journal and audio tricks, went to a new location (can't recall the name off the top of my head, but it's the wintery place)... And had banter every 3 minutes or so the entire time I was there. Mind you it was mostly Blackwall and Dorian bickering at each other, so I got to the (glorious) point of wanting to murder them both.

I was going to post here last night and gleefully proclaim that those tricks really work. However... today I've been playing for about 5 hours, traveling between Hinterlands, Western Approach, and completing Here Lies the Abyss... NO BANTER WHATSOVER. Like, not a peep. Tried keeping the journal clean, resting, changing party members... Literally no one has anything to say anymore.  <_< So frustrating.

When I had that banter last night, the game felt "right." :( So depressing.

Played 80 hours and got maybe 12 banters. I almost never rode a mount. I would usually get two conversations in a row and then nothing for hours other than scenery comments. The only PC interactive banter I got IIRC was in the prologue talking about the Dalish with Solas. It definitely felt like Skyrim, if by Skyrim you mean running around in lonely silence. I started letting myself fall in battle just to get my companions to talk about it.

At least listening to the wind and the birds was relaxing.

For some reason the Val Royeaux music starts playing in the middle of the wilderness at times.

Yeah, I brought that up earlier. More often than not the game glitches and plays it everywhere, which is irksome to me since I'm flirting with Josie to the rhythm of the war drums but no biggie compared with the rest of our raw deal. :P

OK, so, question for those who have been to the Emerald Graves. Your humble topic creator only just got to going there for the first time tonight (gorgeous region, dayumn) and I did the mission with the villa that the Freemen bastards were holed up in.

While I was in there my party was quite chatty and it was all related to the quest. I haven't seen that happen basically anywhere before in 80 hours. I guess this is how it's... intended to be? Have any of you done the quest and gotten equally talkative companions for it? What a wonderful treat that was.

i...just don't know what to think anymore. 1 hr 30 minutes with nothing last time i played -- just jumped on again and had two sera+vivienne (absolute riot btw) and one cassandra+vivienne banter within 15 - 20 minutes. this is so bizarrely random i can't even tell if i'm still having the problem or not.

haven't been to the emerald graves, though. 90 hours and there are at least three regions i haven't set foot in and at least two main quests i have left to do. at least that's something to do when/if this bug gets fixed, assuming i...actually still have the problem.

I am not in anyway a game developer, but here is what I would do:

Two players who experience banter and do not experience banter start a new game - both get to hinterlands, where the banter should be activated 100% hence it cannot be exausted yet. Save the game. Play for 3-6 hours in the Hinterlands (maybe just standing still will be fine - since there is no banter activation points). See if there is no/yes banter. Save again. Compare the 4 saves on the technical/IT/whayever you call it level. (two before and after 3 hours for the non banter player and two for the banter player). Maybe do the same for the Val R music, combat music etc. (Again compare files of players who have it and not have it) If they cant recreat the problem, it MIGHT be on the technical level, but then I guess Bioware will need to collect the specs data and find a common dominator to begin with. But I doubt it has anything to do with PC specs sine this problem is on consoles as well.

Also it would be nice if Bioware actually tolled us if there is more chatty/less chatty areas. Like maybe Hinterlands is less chatty because it is combat heavy (bandits mages templars and what not)? We are not exactly asking them for any company secrets here,

Hey sorry I am not actually answering your questions, but I have a favour to ask if you dont mind. Can you update the top mesage with all the possible fixes for the banter and music? I know they are not 100% working, and are not actually PROPER fixing (more like blood magic which may or may not work), but I think for all the people who cant always follow this threat it would be nice to see and try. Thanks)

Sure, I'll get on that shortly. Right now I have something about that at the bottom (where the original message used to be) but it needs to be cleaned up and detailed, I agree. And probably pinned to the top of the post, too.
