Okay, so. Cole and Varric had their first convo in my game today (after two hours in the storm coast) and it felt kind of in media res for me (I had never heard them interact before and it sounded like they'd already built a rapport);

Spoiler

so I checked one of those party banter compilation videos and found the banter right in the middle of it. As in, it's not their first banter in the game. That got me thinking; do you think that when (if?) this issue is fixed, we will have all the party banter we've missed (as in, I've played 30 hours but I'll get to hear every party banter from the very beginning) or we will have lost a chunk of it on the way? Because that haunts me.

(maybe that was their first banter though? if anyone knows for sure let me know, please)

OK, so, question for those who have been to the Emerald Graves. Your humble topic creator only just got to going there for the first time tonight (gorgeous region, dayumn) and I did the mission with the villa that the Freemen bastards were holed up in.
While I was in there my party was quite chatty and it was all related to the quest. I haven't seen that happen basically anywhere before in 80 hours. I guess this is how it's... intended to be? Have any of you done the quest and gotten equally talkative companions for it? What a wonderful treat that was.

I think that's quest scripted dialogue and that is a separate system. That has worked for me consistently. Other similar places are e.g. Valammar.

personally i have no clue...if characters are having banter that should happen after a different line of banter, it suggests that either we've skipped that banter or it triggered wrong -- but people are getting repeats of the same lines and no lines at all and hearing banters start rather abruptly in what appears should be the middle of the banter, and there is just way too much happening to know what exactly is going on. i'm not a tech person (though i aspire to be one) but...it really depends on what's causing the problem, imo. maybe they're triggering silently, maybe they're triggering out of order and that's somehow causing some problem...maybe someone else has more insight into this, but i don't think we know enough about the problem to tell? if they're not being skipped, logically they should play, but then again there is little about this problem that seems logical considering all the factors and the temporary workarounds and all of the things it effects.

now that i've talked myself in circles, i personally don't know if that's cole and varric's first banter; they've never talked for me, though admittedly i haven't had them in the party together too often.

For some reason the Val Royeaux music starts playing in the middle of the wilderness at times.

Please document this and post it

maybe they're triggering silently, maybe they're triggering out of order and that's somehow causing some problem

Interesting thought. Dammit this glitch is so... complicated! It really sucks because party banter is what separates Dragon Age for a lot of us from stuff like Skyrim.

At this point I'm hoping that whatever patches they come out with in the near future will inadvertently fix the banter as well.

There's some like the VR theme in Emerald Graves at least. Not sure it's the exact same. I chalked it up as being in Orlais…

Sadly my last session today was a whole lot of silence. On the upside it's recorded.

Banters are randomised, surely. They're not always in the same order. Though I imagine some are linked, so you can't get a specific one without the preceding conversation.

Also, a question: Is there *definitely* supposed to be combat music during non-mission combat or special encounters such as dragons? Because some people seem be assuming that there is, but I'm not so sure.

I mean, early in the Hinterlands there's combat music during some of the Templar/Mage fights, but I think this can be treated as mission-specific.

the only time i've had consistent combat music was during fights with dragons. additionally, i did have combat music for a while right after i cleared my journal. that was around the same time as i was doing the templar/mage quests in the hinterlands, however, and since then i don't recall hearing it, for what that's worth. someone without the bug can probably shine more light on it, though.

Major edit to the OP. Went off memory (forgive me, I'm on my phone as usual) and will happily add to/alter what is currently listed as y'all advise.

A couple of things:

1 - When you're clearing out your journal make sure you clear out *everything*. The first time I did it I didn't realize there were sections for 'Collections' and 'Completed Quests'.

2 - Completing that horse racing quest in the Hinterlands seems to have had some effect. I completely ignored it at first because I didn't really want to have anything to do with the mounts but then I saw some one on reddit say they had done the same thing, went back to complete it, and started getting banters again. So far I've had a few banters after completing it, not as many as I think should be normal but more than I've been getting for a while.

And for my completely uneducated guess as to what's wrong: there's a RNG or script that's meant to fire off at certain intervals with a set chance to succeed. If it succeeds, we get a banter, if not, well no banter. For most people the chance to succeed is high, for us with the bug it gets borked and the chances are extremely low. Most of these 'solutions' happen to reset that script or RNG, temporarily giving us banters at regular intervals. For a lucky few it stays fixed, for the rest of us it eventually breaks again.

Just reached Skyhold on my 2nd playthrough, and banter has miraculously returned to me ! I don't know if it's permanent yet, but I had 8 banters in the space of 2 hours last night and 7 banters over an hour this morning (!!). This is almost more than I had in the course of my first playthrough, which took 70+ hours.

I'm not sure how it happened, though I know I've seen some people mention they were getting more banter after getting to Skyhold. I've tried pretty much every method I can think about, but I had pretty much stopped trying when the banter returned, so I don't know if any of them helped or not. The only one I was still doing at the time was making sure that quests were being correctly completed.

I wonder if these are scripted banters? Similar to how in the intro level, there's always a banter between your main character and Varric by the campfire guarded by a Greater Shade. I've never not gotten that party banter (although sometimes I can't participate in it) even though I rarely hear banter outside of that. There's a few more places I've seen across multiple starter area playthroughs where I ALWAYS hear banter, usually quest/area-related (such as my first time entering Val Royeaux), which makes me believe that they must be different from the normal travelling banter. This is just my experience though.

...wait. there's supposed to be banter between your character and varric by a campfire? in the prologue? that you get to choose an option off a dialogue wheel to respond in?

...guess i should go visit val royeaux, then.

EDIT: still nothing. also, is music supposed to play in haven?

Yes music is supposed to play in haven, it's a snare drum military feel. goes from quiet to prominent throughout

Yes, but it's an optional encounter, since it's off the main path. You carry on along the frozen river until you fight three shades, and Varric or Solas asks you about your origin, and you have a chance to give your opinion on it.

For example, if you're a qunari, Varric mentions how they had qunari in Kirkwall but he guesses you're Tal-Vashoth. If you're an elf, Solas asks you about the Dalish. If you're human, Varric guesses that you're from the Free Marches by your accent.

Yes, it seems like there is supposed to be specific companion banter for almost every quest that involves exploring something like a villa, mansion, cave, etc. For me, this type of banter is much more reliable to trigger, but I've still gone through a few places that feel like they should be rife with quest specific chatter and have them say only one or two things.

Maybe it's a human-only thing? (I haven't tried any other races yet, and the banter is related to your race). When you first meet the group, and you go and fight the Greater Shade (right after you get the tactical mode tutorial, in the area with the burning buildings you can enter), if you hang a left it leads up a the path to a campfire. Every single character I've made (6 so far) have gotten banter at this spot and entering Val Royeaux, but no music and exceedingly rare banter outside of that. I'm not very far in the game because I want to play the full experience with music and banter so I just keep rerolling characters and doing content I've completed already, so I can't attest to stuff in later levels, or if me getting that banter is just a fluke.

Obviously I don't know for sure, but what banter I have heard does not seem to progress unnaturally. I get things from early in the game, as well as things commenting on recent quests, but the fact that early game banters still trigger, makes me think that banter simply isn't firing, as opposed to be missed out on. However, I think some people from reddit who are checking the coding for us are saying the banters are firing, but the audio isn't playing. So... I don't know. Honestly, with everything I've missed, I wouldn't mind starting over. If this bugs gets fixed, I know it will feel like a completely different game.

There is a "war drum" music/audio that can glitch. It's the background sound for the War Table, but sometimes it gets stuck playing outside the War Table.
