This. I have diligently noted down every time I got banter - on the PS4 version, I though everything was dead silent but now on the PC I got banter almost exactly every 10 minutes (tested Hinterlands and Crestwood, after aquiring Skyhold). Until I went to the Western Approach that is - no banter whatsoever. I thought the bug had finally hit me, too, until I went to a different area - banter again, about every 10 minutes.

Strange.

I continued to monitor how my game behaved. After the almost incessant banter completely stopped after I got to the Western Approach, it stopped every where else as well. (Almost) no banter in the Exalted Plains, the Storm Coast and the Forbidden Oasis. I have since advanced the main quest a bit and changed the party setup slightly - no dice, almost no banter. I was getting some banter after resting etc., but these were rare occurences every hour or so.

I was getting desperate - did the Banter Bug ruin my save game? Offline/War Table fix didn't really bring the banter on. But then I traveled back to the Hinterlands... et voila, banter every 10 minutes again. At least for my savegame it seems that it really depends on the region if I get regular banter or no. Going to test further, I'll go to Crestwood and then to Exalted Plains again and see what I'll find. I'll be back.

For the record: I'm on the PC version atm and I don't have any audio problems except for the War Drums and missing music in VR. I do get SFX, combat cries and background music. Characters frequently comment on the environment as well. It is only the banter that behaves strangely. I do not have any banter in dungeons/ and special (main)quest areas, but that seems to be intentional.

ETA. Almost exactly 10 minutes in the Exalted Plains and I get my first banter. Huh. I did try the reddit fix beforehand (Origin offline, left Skyhold via Fast Travel at the War Table, VR music works). Now the Western Approach, where I had absolutely zero banter before.

Result: 30 minutes and no banter whatsoever. I think the Western Approach is seriously bugged. Does anyone else get banter there?

Switch to Crestwood: 3 minutes in, first banter. 10 minutes later, second banter (between Blackwall/Solas/Sera  )

Next: Storm Coast. 15 minutes in, first banter. Then 30 minutes nothing, inventory full, I head back - so one banter in 45 minutes. This could just be RNG, or maybe Blackwall's frequent environment commenting ("I like the sea", awww) counts as banter and resets the timer or whatever. I haven't been to the higer level regions yet, I'll report back.

Can anyone else confirm that the frequency of the banter is dependant on region? From now on, I'll do the War Table travel as described in the reddit thread.

First of all, thank you to everyone who has been contributing to work rounds to this issue. I hadn't given the lack of dialogue much thought until discovering this thread and reading that there one fix gave a user music in VR. Had no idea there was music in VR!

Would like to try the war table fast travel option BUT... I can't fast travel driectly from the War Room/Table. The option is always greyed out.... and I don't mean fast travel to VR... I mean anywhere. I have to exit the War Room to castle before I can fast travel which I think defeats the purpose of this work around.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

i apologize if this is slightly obvious but...you can't just click fast travel in the war room until you've clicked the area you want to fast travel to on the table. thought I'd mention it since that confused me at first.

I'm not sure if this hasn't been done yet, but what if we tried a save from a game that works? All we need now is someone, who is not affected by the bug, to volunteer their save game :D

Has anyone tried the bugged game on a different console or pc?

Ceratius - you mean like Ferlenden or Orlais? It doesn't become activate once got to either side of the table either there... and my only choices from there are missions. I would totally believe that I am just dense enough to miss something that obvious... but I am staring at the War Map now clicking away on **** but there aren't markers for locations here just missions.

If I access the travel through world map I know I need to dig down to the location I want to go do to get a travel option but from the war room it does seem to work... unless what I mistake as was the "War Room" means standing outside the door and using the main map function to do this.

You should first click the missions that unlock the area (they are shown as complete, but ignore that) and then fast travel. There are never markers for locations.

That's what I thought, but I didn't realize I can revisit some of those unlocked mission locations this way. Good to know. VR doesn't seem to be one of them. Do you have a mission marker that links to you VR like the workaround on the OP now suggests? The chantry one doesn't have a fast travel option.

Thank you for the help btw

Ohhhh... War Table jump to the Exalted Plains followed by a fast travel to VR... and the Orlaisan city has music... no dialog but music. One step at time a guess.

i imported a savegame-file from my boyfriend, who hasn't got the bug, into my game (pc). No banter. Could be coincidence though, can try again.

A friend pointed out to me, and I can't believe I hadn't noticed, but the characters rarely talk during battle either. I've heard, for example, that Blackwall apparently says the same thing as Garrus when he takes down an enemy, but for me they're mostly silent except when somebody is about to die ("Help Solas!"). I wonder if this is connected?

Omg yes, party members have lots of kill banter. End of every battle somebody should yell a taunt. For me it's my character half the time, the three NPC characters the other half of the time.

Unfortunately we don't get to hear Claudia Black saying "You will fall!", but that's a design issue, not a bug :P

Whoa... I was teleported ahead 80 pages!

I just wanted to stop by and say that I too have been having this problem with my PS4 version of the game, up until Friday when I noticed this thread I had just assumed this was how the game was meant to be, so I have been trying the suggested "fixes," others have been posting and pretty much no luck until I tried just signing out of psn so that when I started the game up it would not connect to origin as suggested by the reddit post a few pages back.

This has worked somewhat, I started a new save today and have noticed that I was getting dialogue with npcs in Haven that just didn't happen on my other saves, such as the templar women down by Cullen and the woman, Felsi, I think is her name, in the tavern(minor stuff, but I never got the few extra lines before trying this). When I got to the Hinterlands I was running around for maybe an hour and a half when I started to get banter between Varric, Solas and Cassandra, and I started to get it more frequently, as I am typing this, three separate banters just happened pretty much one after the other. But there is rarely any combat music, no battle crys, and the ambient music comes and goes randomly.

I would like to note that I am also ticking off quests items and codexes as I get them as well, but not sure if that is actually doing anything as yesterday(before I tried the offline approach), it did nothing.

Hopefully a proper patch will come soon though, as I would like to experience the game in all it's glory.

Popping in to say I tested the War Table fix. Got music in Val'Royleux for the first time (So pretty! Who knew?), but that was about the end of my success. Spent forty minutes in Emprise Du Lion and got one conversation, and while I was happy to hear it, I think it was just my usual fluke banter I get every day. I've been playing this game mostly non-stop on my four day weekend, I get maybe five banters a day, or five for five hours of gameplay. Doesn't feel normal, but who knows, maybe it's my perception.

I just had a quest item pick-up banter.

Picking up letters from dead enemies which queue a quest results in banter. Inquisitor will say something then party member will make a quip.

Specifically, on entering Exalted Plains and killing the first group of enemy soldiers, who drop such an item which triggers banter.

Check it out. May be repeatable. Dorian was the one specifically who spoke in my case.

Okay seems like going offline doesn't help either.... In the hinterlands i got 4 banters in offline mode then, weirdly, went to storm coast and nothing so far, not a single one banter. :/

Probably wasn't, oh well. This is, by far, the most puzzling bug I've ever seen in any game.

Worth trying again maybe?

As for the war table and journal codex "fixes".. no dice. I'm getting less and less banter as my game progresses. Since travelling via war table I've gotten even less banter than before.

Just went to Western Approach. Might as well call it "The Place Banter Goes to Die."

-Today's newest possible lifesaver comes courtesy reddit user spaceclarkson. Here's the official scoop: go offline from Origin's servers and then access Skyhold's war table to fast-travel to a location of your choice. From there, fast-travel directly to Val Royeaux. If things are going as planned, you'll hear Val's music. For many of us hit by these audio glitches, this may well be your first time hearing it. Anyway, go ahead and fast-travel to wherever you intend to play after that. Hopefully intermittent music will be more constant and banter will improve. One important note here is that in the future you'll only want to exit the war table by fast-traveling to a location. Testing illustrates a high probability that leaving it just to head back into Skyhold triggers the bug again, at which point I guess you'll just want to repeat what I've listed. ***

For this to work do we have to stay offline?

I think I've spent about 39 of my 40hrs+ on my severely glitched save completely offline (PS4), and unfortunately the problem has still very much persisted. I did have to laugh, as I think the 2/5 times I've gotten music from Val Royeux, I had indeed fast-travelled there from some other location that wasn't Haven/Skyhold. Will double check! If nothing else, keeping the game offline definitely improves framerate jutter, and I haven't had too many glitches outside of the main sound/banter/combat banter issue.

Thank you for all your hard work with the main page, Jeff, it's fantastic!

The main thing is fast traveling from the war table, some people have had it work while staying online but as with all the proposed fixes and workarounds this may or may not work for you.

Things I've done:

  • Updated my Realtek HD Audio driver audio driver (link).
  • Unplugged my internet (and disabled wifi)
  • Set the graphics to Medium during the Wrath of Heaven quest and audio to Night
  • Mark things as read in inventory, journal (including collections and completed quests), and codex about every few minutes after looting and whatnot
  • Accidentally went to war room in Haven and backed out
  • Explored and completed all Haven quests (again religiously marking things complete)
  • Set the graphics to Automatic and audio to Home Theater
  • Fast traveled via war room to Hinterlands
  • Waited an hour-ish at the first Hinterlands camp (never had been there before)

Results:

  • 4:15 Cass & Varric
  • 48:28 Varric & Cass
  • 50:30 Cass & Solas
  • 1:06:34 Varric & Solas

So aside from the first 45 minute wait, it may be fixed. I'm going to try playing with internet connected and report back.

I like how "it cant possibly be broken, because we can't replicate it" was their answer, and then i do one of the fixes here for the lacking ambient music fix and suddenly I'm noticing music I've never heard.

I thought this game was so music deprived for the last 60 hours or so that i've put on music once or twice to try and spice it up more.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the journal fix has pretty much cured my problem with banter, at least pre-skyhold.

i've had fifteen hours of playtime on my one file since it was discovered, and aside from turning off all of the origin notifications and settings, the only thing i've done is monitor my journal to keep it from being cluttered. my banter is almost consistently regular now -- i get it once every 5 - 30 minutes on average, though when they do come they most frequently come in really quick succession and a lot of the time when i load into my game i load into a conversation that appears to be ongoing. music plays every 1 - 4 minutes when exploring, even if i never hear it in haven/val royeaux. i've now been playing this game for over 100 hours, and i've had more banter and sound in the last fifteen than i had in the rest of my playtime combined. i detested some of my companions before, and now that the banter is playing i'm starting to feel bad about it xD

having said that, however, i do have times where i can go for an hour or more without banter, though as far as i can remember there's always been an environment comment or two in between. and i've only been wandering around the hinterlands and the storm coast -- this file's at 20 hours and i still haven't gotten to skyhold, and that might screw with it, who knows. no idea on whether the western approach will turn dead silent for me as so many reports say. i will be monitoring to see what happens.

here's hoping we see an actual, definitive fix soon. no matter how much banter i get the worry that it's only a placebo measure at best isn't going to be leaving my mind unless we get one, not to mention the massive number of people who are still having problems with this.

Fast travel from war table may fix the music, but not the banter. Tried many times with different maps.
As far as I can tell, the banter bug is fairly random, so the "fix" is usually a coincidence. If it is a permanent fix in your case please let me know :)

Here are my findings: I've been suffering from the no music/no party banter bug for quite a while (and didn't even know about it for the longest time). Since previous research showed (I can't remember the reddit link) that the the party banter triggers were fired in the code I didn't spend too much time looking into it, instead, I looked at the data files.

To my surprise there seems to be a patch in the $GAME_DIR\Update\Patch folder with a fairly small cat/cas file combination (on which the unofficial cat/cas reader crashes while trying to read it). So I tried removing the patch and here are the changes that I noticed: I got no music in the playable section of the intro sequence previously (even with the offline fix applied), but now I had ambient and combat music (EDIT: what I thought was combat music seems to be the ambient track, just louder).

Unfortunately there is a version check in the savegames, so I cannot test it with my old save, but it's a promising lead nonetheless. I am now rushing through the intro to get to Haven and try going around checking if at least the music is fixed. Also I'll try and see if there's a workaround for the version check in the savegames, but I'm not too familiar with the format, so if there are any experts that could help it would be greatly appreciated.
