Coming back to confirm after using Repair in Origin I've gotten regular party banter; at least 4 over the past 40 minutes or so (three conversations and a one-liner)-- a vast improvement over what would've normally been 1, maybe 2 for me. I had started out in one area and fast-traveled to the Plains, didn't use the <->, and the banter seemed to trigger fine. I'll keep testing when I have more time.

Before using Repair, I had already cleared out my codex/journal and used the war table fast travel method, but Repair seemed to work better on top of that. I'll keep playing later and if my banter stays good I'll try canceling away from the war table to see if I still get banter.

What's this repair business? Is it only possible for PC players?

WHAT--

INTERACTIVE? Shoot, that makes two of us then. I seem to be getting more banters now, I hope I get an interactive one soon, I didn't even know that was a thing. What on earth have I been missing??

I'm 45ish hours in and maybe twice got interactive banter. Each time I was completely gobsmacked.  The latest option was after Dorian and Blackwall wouldn't stop bickering (I'm headcanon-ing that they have a thing for each other), and I got the option to tell them off.

But yeah that was a glorious yet fleeting moment when banter worked perfectly. Gone now!

Possibly. I am playing on PC through the Origin client. An earlier post mentioned being asked to try the repair function and he said it worked for him as well. I may have spoken too soon though, it seems banter has pittered off again in the Plains after going well for a couple hours, now suddenly nothing for quite a while. I canceled away from the war table though just to see, maybe that caused it to bug out again. I guess I'll have to try again tomorrow after work.

Hoping to find a chance at interaction soon. The rare occasions Dorian and Bull go at it have been entertaining. :P

Oh man, I'm 46 hours in with party banter occurrences in the single digits. Clearing the journal seemed to help loads, as well as the mount/dismount. As soon as I tried the latter in the Plains, Cole and Solas started talking about the fade. Then Cassandra thanked Cole for finding her locket. This is after hours of a silent party. Thanks loads.

I play female human with brit voice on 360 don't judge my pc cannot deal.

I have been having varying experiences.  On my mage playthrough, I started out having plenty of banter, then hit a huge wall of silence, then had a lot of banter again, now..once again...silence.

On my new rogue playthough, I have not had a single bit of banter since the prologue was over.  It is....seriously annoying.

What of the listed fixes have you tried?

After recruiting cole and getting skyhold I had only one banter in the hinterlands, when usually I get 2 or 3 in a session. Is this normal?

What is this about "no music"? Are you telling me there's supposed to be combat music? I never get that exccept in dragon fights. There's also not always ambient music, but this is usually so low-key that I don't notice it unless it continues for too long.

What music exactly is there supposed to be?

@StElmo:
That depends on how long your sessions are. Also, banter is region-specific, so it may be you've exhausted the banter for your particular party characters if you spent a lot of time in the Hinterlands earlier. One of the main difficulties of tracking this issue is that it's hard to pin down whether any particular "no banter" period is the result of mechanisms working as intended or the result of a glitch.

Yeah I spent most of my time in the hinterlands because I'm worried about going through new areas with the bug and missing stuff.

Totally do right? I'm sure it would be pretty easy to patch in at some stage... one would think.

Theoretically (because no one knows exactly how the algorithm works), since you just got a new party member (Cole), you should still be getting his banter - not possible that it's been exhausted cos he's NEW.  But who knows?

I have this issue too. At first I thought the characters were just unusually silent for a BIoware game, but now by looking at other people's descriptions I realize I've been playing the game without music (ambience only) and hardly any talking. I hope there's a patch for this soon because I'm playing on the Xbox One and I don't want to miss out on anymore of Bioware's awesome writing or soundtrack. The lack of communication also makes traversing the world fairly lonely, your companions might as well not be there.

I'm curious as to why the banter glitch has to be reproduced to be patched. Can't they say eff trying to find out what is happening specifically, then just add certain trigger points, a la Origins?

People whose banter is working fine get a few extra trigger points. People whose banter isn't working fine at least get reliable locations for it to trigger. Why is this not an option?

(I could just be stupid, but figured I'd ask...)

Possibly the banter is triggering but it's the audio that's messed up. Wouldn't surprise me... I've had sound effects not syncing properly, Blackwall making exclamations about what he's witnessing in Val Royeaux while we're in the middle of a desert (or he's going senile :P )... Odd things like that.

That would probably require a significant effort given the size of the world and since it was not built from the ground up to have such triggers...

Some guy on reddit hacked into his game and could detect the banter triggers going off. They went off just fine in both a bugged game and a "normal" game, the only difference was that in the bugged game the triggers didn't lead to any banter actually being played. That's probably why it's hard for Bioware to reproduce this: they see the triggers going off for bugged save games just fine. It's just that it doesn't seem to reach the actual output.

Well they have to know what exactly goes wrong where before they can fix it. And with the complexity of the game, adding stuff like that could mess up a whole lot of other things. If it is even possible - the way the code is currently written may not even allow the change at all, or not without a whole lot of doing.

Then again, it may be entirely possible. Who knows?

They said in a stream that they're working on a patch but didn't say for what bugs exactly, here's hoping whatever this patch fix it would somehow affect our audio issues and hopefully solve them

Well in theory since they don't know what exactly is causing the banter bug, they might accidentally solve it when patching a different issue :P

I've noticed that my companions barely talk to one another. When I first noticed it, I didn't think much of it but now that I'm further in the game, they barely talk at all! And when they do it is so random or it's scripted.

I have also noticed that the background music is wonky. When I visit different areas I mostly hear the same music, like the same from the hinterlands, sometimes no music at all. I've found fast traveling from the war table helps a bit with banter and music, but when I return to Skyhold the drum music will play which is annoying because it drowns out dialogue. Does Skyhold even have music besides the drums??

I hope they can fix this, but it seems they aren't experiencing the same thing? I want to hear all the banter and the beautiful music!! Idk if this will help, but this has been my experience. I play on the PS4, about 85 hours in.

As someone with bugfixing experience, I can honestly say that hacking in temporary fixes is often the cause of more bugs. It's something you only want to do as avery very last resort.

You pretty much always want to be able to reproduce a bug, so you can fix the root cause without affecting other systems adversely.

We can hope! However, Mark Darrah recently said that this is being worked on but won't be addressed in the very first patch, because it still needs to be reliably reproduced, identified, etc.

So what DOES happen if you "exhaust" all the banter? In a game working as it should, with banter exhausted so to speak, do characters just go quiet? Or do they start repeating conversations?

Sorry if I've missed this, coming in 89+ pages into a discussion, it's almost guaranteed I've missed something.

No more banter if all of them are 'exhausted'

You won't know if you've run out of conversations but trying new areas and changing up the party should reliably produce banter for a while

I am secretly hoping any CPU optimizations done in this game will allow banter to execute more readily if it's a task prioroty issue. But I really thank and appreciate the devs for working on the issue to find the root cause. I'm terrified I might have it or will get it at some point in the future.

A suggestion for future games, or maybe even a patch: "Banter" button (e.g. left directional pad) - Inquisitor says "What?" and then your companions will banter if they haven't filled their quota.
