I have a dead sure fix... well, sort of...

Play the DA Inquisition soundtrack over your cd-player, MP3-player or Iwhatever. This way you can easily add any ambient music you think is fitting. Then come up with your own banter. Here's an example to start you off:

The Inquisitor: "Why is your head so small, Bull?"

The Iron Bull: "It's not. It just looks small cos my horns are so big."

Sera: "Yeah... they are. Don't they get in the way?"

The Iron Bull: "In the way of what?"

Sera: "Umm... low hanging branches... door frames? Aren't they a bit inconvinient."

The Iron Bull (glares at Sera). "No."

Blackwall: "I would think those massive pecs would be more inconvinient than the horns. I mean, can you even bend down to tie your boots?"

The Iron Bull. "Sigh."

The Inquisitor: "He he he..."

What is this about "no music"? Are you telling me there's supposed to be combat music? I never get that exccept in dragon fights. There's also not always ambient music, but this is usually so low-key that I don't notice it unless it continues for too long.

What music exactly is there supposed to be?

There's music for boss fights and for dragons and ambient music is supposed to play every few minutes or so. Then there's the short tune that plays when setting up a new camp and when resting. You should get music the first time you visit Val Royeaux and as for subsequent visits...well going there directly from the war table will get it to play again after you load in but who knows if that's supposed to happen or not. Going back to Skyhold after traveling to another zone from the war table will also play music but I'm 99.9% sure that's a bug.

I think as long as you get music during boss and dragon fights and you hear music play every few minutes when you're exploring then you should be fine on that front.

Right now just about everything about the sound and music seems to be a hot mess, I wasn't getting ambient music when exploring until I started traveling from the war table but now for some reason the combat sfx are playing almost twice as loud as everything else, and when allocating skill points the confirmation chime will alternate between quiet and really loud. The newish character I made suddenly has a chatty party while my other character gets the silent treatment for hours at a time.

For me, Emerald Graves seems to be the sweet spot for banter. I was half expecting my game to go back to normal after yesterday's luck, but today was just as successful. I laughed out loud when Cole said "The squirrels are watching me."

I tried some of the possible workarounds and clearing my journal was a bit strange.

In the tab for completed quests, roughly 80% of all entries were marked with the "new" icon, some were marked as read. I don't remember ever visting that tab, but i might just not remember looking at it at some point.

Then i went through the list and cleared all the "new" icons.

When i returned to the game, i got 2 minutes full of "Quest Complete!" notifications.

That suggests the possibility of those quests being in some kind of faulty state. I haven't seen anyone else mention this, so it might just be an isolated issue.

The rest of my post is just me theorizing about this and easily dismissed if the bug i mentioned isn't widespread ;)

In my case, banter triggering and trying to use one of those quests as the topic might just result in ingame silence if that causes some kind of error. That could also explain why one area works well for some people, while it causes complete silence for others. What if the whole party wants to talk about that awesome quest and everytime they try they bug out? Meanwhile, someone else didn't do that quest or it simply completed correctly and is in a valid state.

A main quest in a faulty state might just kill most of the banter for all areas.

It could also make the whole thing harder to reproduce. If i was tasked to find the cause for missing banter, the general course of action would to look if the banter trigger is firing and what could prevent it from doing so. If i didn't read about missing audio even if it is triggered, i'd probably equate "triggered" with "hearable ingame and working as intented".

Then again, this would point to a problem with the savestate and would be easy to reproduce with the saves they analyzed.

Hi Dulon,

That thing with completed quests seeming to "stack" as new despite being, well, complete, is the same for everyone and really perplexing. Finalizing them does seem to help move other things along, such as banter, for many of us. Keep tabs on it from hereon out; it's weird but sometimes effective.

Coming back to conform again HAVING music and banter and everything. Not glitched yet. 10 hours in the story. Not in Skyhold yet
Finished game in 90 hours. Restarted with qunari mage.

My bag of goddies that work for me for now:

-restart character creator as soon u noticed sthing wrong. Like no bartner, or music the very beginning of the game, as soon as u get your group. Needs to be checked and restart.
- From the 5 characters I tried 3 were buged. No music after the first cut scene if I opened the main menu when the first tutorial ask you to do that.Right away restart till it works.
-offline.
-NO manual save
-wartable travel
-asap clear codex, inventory, quests
-sleep in tent over and over again till hear the rest sound
-did not get the horse yet.

What I got:
-constant chat, max silence is 4 minutes in banter
-constant VARIED background music EVEN in inventory, only gets a little quieter but there is music there. There is only silence in music like for a minute and a half. No more than that. Music changes based on terrain. Hill, or village or lost fortress has different tunes.
-looks like quests can screwed if not doing it the order it was intended. Like in Hinterland mage-templar war clear it right away and could finish the requests that before could not.
-follow the level suggestions the game shows and visit the areas based on it.

Will get back to u guys when I get the horse and when I get to Skyhold.

BUT have to say it is a completely different game with banter and music. After playing like this have to say, I consider the sound/music/banter bug a game breaking one. I dare to say anyone who complains that the game is boring and just doing fetchquest, they must have this bug, because it adds a huge atmosphere to the game and u don't even notice how much time u spent on it.

Also experiencing how this game SHOULD play and what I had before ( had absolutely no music for 90 hours and bartner had 6) IF I get the bug again, I will STOP playing right away till we get a patch or a final solution for it. Once again I cannot describe it how different it is with bug or without it.

Agreed. I've realised that I can spend hours clearing the area if there is music and banter. Before, I maybe spent 30 minutes somewhere before getting bored and going somewhere else.

From what I experienced, I found out that sometimes rest music doesn't work. Is it triggering everytime you rest at a camp in your non-bugged character?

Also, there should be music after the very first cutscene? Honestly, I just can't remember.

I'll try this anyway. I think the real test is going to be Skyhold. If by that point your game is still fine, you're probably good to go.

Yes, every single time I rest there is music. Also in bugged version ,after we found out about the war table trick, I rested it saved I rested it saved. I waited and rested again till it had the music. Then I continued and had background music and banter for a while.

Yes, ardarn, it will be really interesting to see how your game behaves once you get to Skyhold. I wonder if you can escape the bug altogether by avoiding certain "triggers" (whatever those may be). This is just such a variable bug, it seems like no two players have the same iteration of it.

One last question: did you have combat music in the prologue and in the first hours in the hinterlands?

2 questions then:

-does Skyhold supposed to have music?
-should I get the horse? Really scared to get it.honestly.

I know it by heart by now.
U get your character. Go through bridge. Music starts to fade. Follow the path. No music. Fall down bridge. Fight-music. Up the mountain music fades. Get the team. No music. Get to the frozen lake, awesome music. Up the mountain must have banter. Choose the mountain path. Go through temple. Must have banter.
And follow tutorial. Any glitch or cuts the music. Restart.
and yes has epic fight-music in hinterland especially when get into the templar-mage fight after the first camp.

Tried a new character, all seems well so far. Just as you said. I have kept the game in main menu for a few minutes - still good. Will see how this goes. But thank you for the very detailed instructions!

I've tried at least 4 new characters in the last few days. All seem to have different amount of banters. Had one who had consistent banter, but I didn't like his face...

 Choose the mountain path.

Actually, funny that you mention the mountain path. The one character for who banter worked I had taken through the mountain path. The rest of them I chose to charge. Huh.

The only music I've ever heard in Skyhold is the persistent war drums, and I think that's a glitch. I don't know what Skyhold is supposed to sound like. I'd go poke around youtube if I wasn't at work on my phone.

Some are reporting that banter breaks after Skyhold, some are reporting that it comes back, most are saying that the war table travel fix only works from Skyhold...from a layperson perspective, it just seems like Skyhold is a kind of scripting threshold. So you might be safe if you're still getting banter and music once you unlock it? Totally grasping straws though.

The horse seems to affect some people but not others. If it worries you and you don't miss having mounts it might be worth skipping? I don't know if you need to have mounts at any time to advance the plot lol.

Ok. Will try to get to skyhold just to see. Really curious. And will not get that damn horse. That's gonna be a looooooong journey on foot.

Some guy on reddit hacked into his game and could detect the banter triggers going off. They went off just fine in both a bugged game and a "normal" game, the only difference was that in the bugged game the triggers didn't lead to any banter actually being played. That's probably why it's hard for Bioware to reproduce this: they see the triggers going off for bugged save games just fine. It's just that it doesn't seem to reach the actual output.

This is exactly how it "feels" the bug impacts in my game. Some of the banter I do hear seems to occur mid line or as a response to something someone else said but I didn't hear. My take on what I experience is that everything is triggering but something interferes with it actually reaching completion.

Even the whistle for my mount doesn't always complete. Sometimes it isn't synced with the visual action, sometimes there is no sound, sometimes it is perfect.

I am playing on the PS4, and I'm having a similar problem...NPC conversations are cutting off, or Im only getting half conversations..I also cannot seem to access player conversation options that are made in response to others speaking and that are only available for a short time. I tried every command on my controller, but I can get my character to choose the response dialog. Ive only gotten it to work once pressing R3, but never again.

Oh, I know that one. U mean u get the little bubble at the bottom of screen and u should respond. I need to press X for me to join in the conversation.
Or the one u should press R3? If no response, immediately open L1 item menu, and u can have the option to join in the conversation by pressing R3 again.
or if u mean that the conversation wheel is up but the conversation arrow does not show up, also u need to press L1 item menu and u will have the option to chose a response:)
Hope one of them helps. There are so many bugs to chose from:)

For me Skyhold didn't make a difference, neither does the war table. My broken banter is allllll about the zone. Western Approach and Exalted Plains = dead silence. Crestwood and Storm Coast = everyone feels like talking. And Hinterlands are somewhere in between.

This is in my second "let's try to fix the banter" playthrough.
