Haven't tried any of the work arounds yet since I didnt' know about them but banter seems to only happen often for me in the Hinterlands at least it did in my first run though it was the same two banters over and over but as soon as I switch my party or go back there I get almost nothing, or I'll get banter popping up and be interrupted by a companion commenting on the area we're in or even one case of the banter cutting off mid way for no reason, my second run was far more quite than my first. Hopefully that's not a trend thats going to start happening each run becoming more quite than the last, I need banter darn it, in a game this big with that much walking banter needs to be more often than it is by a lot.

Just wanted to add my hat into this thread. Definitely experiencing the bug, especially in the Western Approach. Have literally gone hours and hours of wandering around everywhere and no banter to be had at all.

How have things been with your game lately, Jeff? Any luck with the work-arounds?

A fair bit, generally. There are still total dead zones like the Western Approach, and I caught Cassandra/Dorian repeating their first and only banter earlier, but in a few spots and with the right party composition I seem to generate banter every 10-20 minutes. A lot of stuff stopgaps it, but it's a hell of a lot better to have any opportunities at all than none whatsoever, which is what a lot of people are still encountering.

At some point this evening I'm planning on using my PS4's record feature (if I can figure it out anyway) to showcase a two-hour block of Hinterlands gameplay; Conal -- the dev who made the update announcement -- requested that I do so via private correspondence. I debated mentioning it because, well, frankly I'd rather certain other people here, whose files remain more bugged than mine now seems to be, were asked instead. But we'll see. He said it'll help out considerably, so hopefully Vivienne's complete silence continues.

Same. Seems common. It's like the heat is too much for the cast to contemplate opening their mouths.

I'd be willing to pitch in. I really want to enjoy this game, but dialogue and banter triggers not firing properly damn near ruins it for me. I guess I could record it on my xbone's dvr.

An hour tonight, choose a party that I haven't had used before

Solas

Sera

Blackwall

My rogue inquisitor.

I played some in Hinterlands, Val Ramaar (spelling?) it was my first time in this area. Val Royeaux to visit some merchants.

Party banter once.

Also no music at all in Val Royeaux. Just environmental sound effects, nothing else.

This is on PS4.

So, here's the thing.

I started a completely new game (again *sigh) and I tried the mountain path / watch for music / resting music at camp / travel from war table... and the results have been amazing so far.

An hour with 7 banters. There was a 15 minute pause in the middle as well. That was when I didn't get the rest music. As soon as I did I've been getting banter every 2-10 minutes so far.

*Shrugs* I don't know what to make of this.

I think it's safe to say that most people start experiencing these bugs after the exodus to Skyhold. As far as I can tell I don't have that many problems with banter in the Hinterlands and Storm Coast before the attack at Haven. After that I'll get the occasional miraculous party banter or a repeat between characters that had already occurred in a pre-Skyhold Hinterlands.

For me Skyhold doesn't make a difference. I've had minuscule banter before Skyhold. In fact, I've had more in a different playthrough AFTER getting Skyhold.

Chiming in that I have the bug, I am less than 10 hours in (~8), and I started having this bug after going to Val Royeaux the first time. The entire time ever since hearing about the bug I've been leaving the war table via fast travel ONLY, and thought this could be a way to avoid it.

I've done all of the fixes in this thread and none have worked. I had at least quite a bit unique dialogue between Cassandra, Varric, and Solas until I went to Val Royeaux, and after I picked up Iron Bull. I THINK he might've said something at one point, but since then it's been silence. Same with everyone else I have picked up, and I probably spent an hour running around trying to find the clues for Blackwall's quest to recruit him.

This is all really disappointing, tbh. :( I'd like to not start over to see if it would be fixed in that save, but ...

Some background info: <10 hours in, Xbox One, Inquisition is still in Haven (pre-Skyhold). I've tried all of the fixes, tried them online and offline (incl. taking my Xbox off the internet entirely).

I hope there is a fix for this soon. :(

Of course as I post this, Cass and Vivienne are now making dialogue while I'm on my way to Redcliffe.

I can't even. I also still think my music is bugged (and when I was in Val Royeaux earlier to test there was 0 music). I wonder if I should try fast travelling back again?

I hadn't gotten that far yet, so bit a spoiler.

My game decided that I don't deserve banter anymore...again. Despite the fixes. Two hours, no banter in the Emerald Graves, and I used to get banter quite frequently in that area. Took a completely new party as well, Dorian, Viv and Solas. No peep. no music either.

The 'check off all completed quests/collections/etc in the Journal' fix worked very well for me. Feels like a completely new game. If this it hadn't worked I don't think I could even play this game anymore. Hopefully this patch comes out soon still.

I was getting banter when I first started the game. I didn't really notice when it just sort of faded into minor sprinkles here and there, mostly related to quests, but I didn't really get any banter when I was wandering around the Emerald Graves last night. I got one banter this morning after an hour or so of play, and that was right after finishing a side quest. I had put Sera in my party since I hardly ever use her to see if any banter would pop up, but that was the only one. I often don't get any music in areas. I got the Val Royeaux music this morning, but it didn't loop. It just played for about 2 minutes and then stopped and never started up again. Skyhold doesn't have music either, except when I fast travel there after fast traveling somewhere else from the war table. Then, Skyhold has the war table drum music. I mis banter and music :(

Even with the War Table workaround the Western Approach is totally silent. All I can hear is footsteps. Very sad. :(

StarcloudSWG, I had been wondering about this as well. If being near the bottom end of the system reqs was contributing to the problem. I started out my DA:I experience with a lot of crashing. That has settled down but this bug has popped up.
wonder how many other people have the same problem but run a high end system.

IE poor optimization leads to memory leaks leads to things not being properly loaded into memory.

I wonder if the developers have been using computers to test the 'missing banter / people / items' problem on machines with 8gb of RAM or less, on-board audio, and leaving their computers running Inquisition for long periods of time.

I've also noticed that I get more banter when exploring new areas... Running around the Hinterlands to catch up on stuff is done in silence now but crestwood is providing a smattering of banter as I move about. western approach is a barren waste land audio wise.. Must be all that sand.

Probably not be related at all but I get a lot of double codex enter notifications popping up. Bottles of Thedas in particular... Could be related since keeping my codex and journal "tidy" seems to help keep the banter flowing. Wonder if there is some weird stuff gumming up in the background.

It's not just on PC, though. I'm playing on PS4 and have the issues, too. I don't know how the console and PC specs line up, though.

Not sure if this is helpful, but due to unusual circumstances, I have to use a wireless bluetooth speaker with my laptop (long story). At any rate, when Iturn off the speaker and try to switch to my earbuds, the sound gets very strange.

Mostly it's quiet, but the sound can cut out...and then periodically I can hear music for a few seconds, then it goes away, then the music comes back. It's very, very strange. SO while I occasionally hear music, it's obviously not normal. No idea why it starts doing this.

Basically, it would look like: quiet ----> sudden music for a few seconds ---> quiet ---> more music for a few seconds ----> quiet

I don't necessarily seem to have much of a problem with banter, as I've gotten a good amount of it I guess, but the lack of music and this weird behavior when I switch from speakers to earbuds, etc. is pretty odd. Heh, until this thread and the other one, heck, I wasn't aware that there was supposed to be music. Fortunately, I like the quiet so it doesn't bug me too much as long as I can hear myself walking, fighting, etc. (environmental sounds do seem to work I guess?).

I``ve had a lot of problems With banter and audio acting strangly or not at all.

In addition to this I have also had frequent crashes, white fog, stuttering during cut-scenes, texture flickering and the GPU producing an immense amount of heat.

Now to allivate the graphics problems i switched to single GPU instead of the SLI mode I was running and lo and behold all graphic problems are gone. I now run this on everything at ultra and with the GPU only reaching 70 degrees (as opposed to 90-95 degrees celsius)

As an added bonus it also seems that music plays normally and I am getting frequent and previously unheard banter.

This also seems to work on buggy save made before I switched SLI mode and on a New character. Might be something worth trying for somebody else... at least for the jump in performance.

So it might be CPU/GPU bottleneck priority problem??

I also frequently clear my journal, at least for the completed quests...which dont seem to actually complete before I view them in that tab

my system is:

Win 7 64 bit, i7 3,5 GHz, GTX 690 GPU, Asus xonar phoebus sound card and 16 GB RAM.

Oh, interesting thought Benetleilax, I adjusted some of my graphic settings down at the end of the night yesterday for some other reasons, wonder if that is the real reason why my banter performance is better today. And this is why the I as a member of the general public can really suck at diagnosing and solving software problems ;) I muck about with multiple things at the same time and so who knows what really works or doesn't work.

*** updated *** with hardware stats

My ATI Radeon 5870 technically meets system requirements, but isn't recommended and is peaking at about 85 degrees Celsius.. That's well over 150 F ... And I am thinking that is a problem.

So here are mine observations.

I started new character completely offline, no keep data, not signing in, origin offline.Decided to update my realtek drivers. Also I follow couple of rules - always clear my codex and journal, so that there are no "stars". Also travel from haven using the war talble. In the hinterlands with the original group i was getting consistent banter. Went to the storm coast with Viv Cassandra and Sera (girl squad ftw). Had some bunter then it died. Then, when the giant kicked my ass, I quickloaded, and 2 seconds later cassandra commented on the Waking Sea, FOLLOWED by the comment on the sea by Sera. that made me wonder, so i played a bit, and quicksaved/loaded. I had three banters in a row. Played a bit again, quicksave/loaded - one enveremonetal comment followed by two banter.

Basically try going to the Storm Coast, stand close to the sea - quicksave/load and see what happens. I am not sure if being offline/no keep data/clear journal has anything to do with it, but i decided to do all of those things to be on the safe side.

The way I am planning to play now is quick save/load if i play a whole hour without banter. I havent tried other regions other then the storm coast though.

Regarding music, I have it come on and off every minute or so. But i figured it is the way it is suposed to be. Also no magical after-battle comments, but i am not even sure how often they are supposed to be. I mean are we supposed to hear Cassandra say "is everyone okey" after we kill one spider?))
