Well, my game seems to be "fixed" thanks to the War Table trick. I'm also clearing codex/journal/inventory just in case.

This is the third day I've achieved banter and combat dialogue as well as first time I've had INTERACTIVE banter. It was glorious!

Banter really is essential to gameplay because outside of it, companions don't really interact much. It's difficult, if not impossible, to gauge their relationships with eachother. For example, today I completed Iron Bull's personal quest, and during some banter, Solas was trying to comfort him, saying that "You have the Inquisitor... and me." It was a really sweet moment between the two of them. Missing all of this is a killer. The devs really need a figure out a better way of triggering banter. ><

I have a dedicated sound card (Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music, and my drivers are up-to-date) and definitely have the problem.

Darrah's tweets that someone posted earlier make me think my guess about it being a problem with RNG that's tied to whether or not banter's fire off isn't far off the mark. I think that either the game's meant to have something like a 1-in-5 chance of a banter firing off but for us with the bug the RNG gets borked and it instead becomes something like 1-in-50, which is why we still get them but just extremely rarely, or it stays 1-in-5 but the game mistakenly thinks that it constantly comes up negative even when the RNG produces a positive result for firing off the banter.

Regardless though, even if we accept BioWare's "It's working as it should, you've just run out of banters for that part of the game!" response, by their own admittance we shouldn't be getting repeated banters, yet many report (myself included) that they are, so the banter system is definitely, beyond any doubt, bugged for certain people.

I'll accept what they said if they tell me they've only recorded 1-3 banters for each companion, across regions.

For me, the bigger problems is the music right now. Can anyone conform that background music is supposed to play longer than 10 seconds when exploring the hinterlands? I cannot image that as music is fairly consistent in multiplayer matches, constantly playing in the background.

It is really taking enjoyment out of exploring, besides the banter bug... Combat sounds are the least of my worries, I've had them pretty regular, but Cassandra constantly shouting out isn't really that immersive.

Anyone got any hints about getting constant background music? I am not in Skyhold yet, so the war table fix wouldn't work for me...

I loaded up Teagles save briefly, music in Val Royeaux was playing and I fast traveled to the hinterlands (didn't do much more, don't want to spoil myself) - I only got 10 seconds background music, then fading out after about 2 minutes it started back up again for 10 seconds...

Is this how it was designed?

If I'm understanding this right, then it reinforces what I thought about the banter not triggering based on players not meeting certain triggers in game. All my banter has pretty much dried up in the Hinterlands. I'm not at Skyhold yet. I did a heap of quests in the hinterlands and went to Val Royeaux. I thought maybe I'd used up everything Cass, Solas and Varrick have to say to one another at that point in the overall game.

Has anyone else noticed that when your party banters they get the little yellow "box" with some dots next to their character icon on the left-hand side?  (at least on PC)?

I'm pretty sure I've never seen the yellow boxes show up and NOT heard anything.

I wonder if the devs have seen any of that on the videos that people have taken (they probably need a video plus save games and look at the logs and they should be able to see that the game SAYS it triggered banter, but video shows it did not)?

But given the last twitter comment that it's entirely likely to go 30 minutes without banter...well...that just stinks.  So I guess my 2-3 banters a night (that's the highest I've gotten it lately) is "good" since it's over 2 hours of gameplay.

I started out with lots of banter, then went almost totally silent, and after trying every fix listed except role a new character/game once/hour is about as good as I've gotten.

sigh

Reading all these posts, at this point I'm pretty sure the fans are closer to finding the exact reason and fix for this bug than the devs. Bioware can't even replicate the damn bug on their end. How sad.

No more day 1 purchases.  <_<

That dev post on it not being a bug and the fact that they probably won't do anything about it is so dispiriting to me. With the new swtor expansion coming out I'm dropping DAI for the moment.

Yay day 1 purchases! I waited a week after it came out to purchase it, hadn't heard anything about any ridiculous bugs, and then get slapped in the face with this bug. SIIIIIGH.

Gotta love lack of dev conversation on the issue. So many people keep defending the dev team, when all it would take to smooth over some of the anger and disappointment would be the dev team being more open. It's not that hard to write a forum post.

Yeah, it's just really weird that user reports are so different on the music aspect. A couple pages back a user stated that he is now having constant and consistent (albeit low volume) background music. I would love that, I think the sound track is great when exploring the hinterlands - I play on a home theater system on my TV, but I am mostly just hearing my own footsteps... In Haven too, before my game glitched out there was no music at all (I could listen to the bard in the tavern), now I constantly have these weird wardrums in Haven (the bard is now silent, even when standing right in front)...

I don't know, there is some much weird stuff with the audio - music, banter, combat battle sounds, silent bards (loving the songs by the way) - it just takes you out of the immersion. I just want one giant fix-all-audio-in-this-great-game-patch... That should be my christmas present this year:)

Yeah, I agree, it is really weird, and the thing is, nobody knows what it's supposed to be like (is it constant, intermittent, are there supposed to be drums in haven, music in Val Royeaux, the list goes on and on and on) and it'd be nice if the dev team could clear up what things should be like especially considering the conflicting user reports.

Fascinating. Catching up on this thread while my party just hangs out, silently after playing in silence for an hour. Then they kill a lurker automagically and have two banters.

Maybe I just won't play. I'll just stand around and wait for banter.

OMG - *spoiler* A certain character anticipates Lurker attacks and comments. That's it. Part of my new session plan. Let everyone stand around and chat while I watch patiently.

Damn.

And another one.

Four in 10 min while I do diddly squat. This is my official contributions to the cause. Try all the fixes, then stand around and let some people attack you and the banter will flow.

--

Just to throw more clutter into the mix. Could play style affect banter? Could a propensity to do anything but just run around and interact with the world interfere in the banter prompts. Typically, I check the map, journal, codex etc A LOT. I use the tactical camera and I tab out of full screen to check the prima guide etc. I know banter isn't on a timer per say but well I am grasping at straws. My party has ventured on to the Western Approach to do some SOMA and would you believe it, they can banter there too while watching the sand blow by. Well twice. But twice more than never before.

Yeah, I had like 25 hours worth of my party just standing around in various locations and occasionally running around in circles and whatnot when I was testing stuff last week. Pretty "cray-cray." Every time I look at my total file time I have to consciously subtract all that in my head.

Have there been any new tested-and-at-least-marginally-approved solutions in the past couple of days? I haven't had as much time to read every post as I'd like because I'm heading into finals week.

I made a new character and imported new world stats from the Keep. That seems to have triggered some things. I had beautiful music in Haven when first exiting the cabin, and I've had banter between characters that never uttered a word before, and some post-fighting banter too. Sadly still no interactive banter, the darn dialouge wheel just won't highlight, and no banter coming from my character, and no during battle banter either. But it is still better than what I had before.

Today I spent two hours in Crestwood and got a total of two true banters. Since there were a lot of other conversations going on (environmentals with characters responding to one another as well as NPC quest convo's with companion responses) it didn't feel too empty. I also spent two hours in Western Approach, however, where the number of environmentals and quest convo's was not very high and also got two true banters total. That was a lot of silence. I had not been in either zone before, and I picked characters who had not yet bantered together. I am still playing without "fixes". It's all on Twitch (where I am slowly becoming more systematic lol).

As for music, during main quest events and dungeons I get consistent music, but when just running around in zones it's intermittent. It would be nice to get confirmation of what is the intended amount of music, as I am not sure that this is actually bugged this way.

I'm a little into a new game (testing while my other 20-hour game waits patiently). Even with traveling from the war room, marking all codex/journal/inventory as read, no mounts, resting at camp.. not a lot of improvement.
If that had worked for me, it would still be pretty tedious and take me out of the moment. Guess I'm going to put this one aside until it's fixed. :( That doesn't mean I won't continue to obsessively check these threads! ☺️

A couple of page back I said it is working now properly for me. Had 3 interactive banter too.music comes and goes evey 2 minutes for 10 second. Did not get the horse. And now no ghost neigh either. Today I make my way to skyhold. Very very curious about it.

I restarted the game and was very conscious about it. If had any problems in tutorial I restarted again. What seemingly helps a great deal for me is sleep in tent over and over till I hear the sleeping music.
Beware: from the 2 tents only the main tent with the Inquisition pole has music

So looking at the latest tweets from Mark Darrah, I'm starting to wonder if my game is even bugged at all. I'm only in the Hinterlands. I went to Val R once and that was it.

I get music maybe once every 2-3 mins. It goes for about 30 seconds or so. In Haven, the music is constant. Its pretty loud war drums when I first go there, but it slowly turns into a background drumming. That bard girl plays and sings for me.

As for Banter, I got two in half an hour in my recent test. I was just wandering around the Hinterlands. Interestingly, I got one banter seemingly as I entered a new part of the zone I hadn't been to before. The banter didn't relate to the zone, but yeah. In Mark's tweets he said you "can use up everything two people have to say to each other at a time". I understand this as maybe new Banter doesn't unlock until certain zones and plot triggers are encountered. It would make sense for people who have dried up banter and are just doing sidequests because they're not wanting to advance the story any further in case of missing banter.

And this:

@BioMarkDarrah so if im resource gathering and dont get banter in a new location with a party combo for 30 mins it could be random chance?

@LinksAwake yes. In fact, that's not even that unlikely.

So then going for 30 mins without banter is normal then? If you think about it: 3 hours worth of banter dialogue recorded and they're probably 30 secs each. A lot of that is going to be spaced out over an expected playthrough which is what? 80-90 hours or something?

I think they would've been better having some low-key music in the background and a more reliable banter system, but I think I'm not bugged.

I'm 10 hours in, but since the banter/music bug has had me all worried, I haven't played and I've lost track of the story and everything. I'm not entirely hopeful that we'll get a good fix for this anyhow. If we do, it'll be January or Feb, and I'll be gearing up for Witcher 3 by then. I think I'll just restart now and hope for the best. I want to change my little elf hottie's hair anwyay.

Ardarn, you're doing the Maker's work with all of your restarting, lol. Hope your game is still fine after you get to Skyhold.

JeffZero, when this thread hits 100 pages, can we have a party? ...A pity party? Aha...ha...haha...

Well this is disappointing I just found this forum and tried every possible fix written and nothing worked. I'm on a PS4 I've played the game a little over 20 hours and have had 3 total convos. There's also virtually no music in any of the worlds.

Here's a question: I noticed the fix using the war room just says sky hold. I'm not there yet I'm still at haven. Does this quick travel war map fix only work at the war room in skyhold, not haven?

That only works from skyhold. But can u do me a favour and try to rest in camp till u hear the resting music. It did help me to jump start at least the background music.

I just responded above but then saw your post here. I'm confused with all this skyhold talk. You mentioned hope your game is fine after skyhold. Is something with the bug fixed by the time you get there? I have no idea how close or far I am to that area
