What are the pros and cons of various weapons types? Longsword vs axe; greatsword vs greataxe vs maul; that type of thing.

Eg I've got the Fereldan Captain Longsword from the beginning of the game. The inventory screen says it's a level 7 weapon and does 69 dps, with 62 damage per hit (I think). I could replace it with a common raider hatchet, which does 83 dps and 57 damage per hit. Is there any reason to stick with the sword? I'm guessing these aren't the only stats that weapons have.

Hi hong,

This is a great question, and I put a lot of thought into it myself while wandering around collecting herbs and stuff.  (no spoilers below).

Ultimately, I came to this conclusion:  there's a trade-off.

If you go through the ability trees, you'll notice that ALL the damaging offensive abilities have their damage calculated by your weapon damage, which is intrinsically tied to the weapon you are wielding.  While stats no doubt also factor in, DA:I has placed a much larger focus on gear than other RPGs of late.  You can have amazing stats, but your damage output will suck if you are using starting gear.

That said, there are two main stats you are presented with when you click on a particular weapon.  In your case, you have your Captain Longsword and the Raider Hatchet.  The Hatchet has a higher DPS, but a lower base damage, achieved by having a faster attack animation.  When an ability in any particular tree calculates the damage it will do, it does X% of Weapon Damage.  That "weapon damage" is not DPS, but the base damage of the weapon.  In other words, if you wanted to maximize the damage done by your warrior's abilities, stick with the longsword.  If you want to maximize your warrior's basic "R" semi-auto attack, give him the hatchet.

When would you like to do one of these, though?

For instance, I currently have recruited several warriors into my party.  One of them is a sword&board, and as a result, has three low cooldown, low stamina cost, but highly damaging and disruptive abilities available to them(shield bash, payback, and lunge).  This warrior will always get a weapon with high base damage, regardless of its DPS.

Another warrior I have completely devoted to a more support role.  This warrior has spec'd down the entire battlemaster tree, and I use his upgraded warhorn abilities to cause serious problems for the enemy. But because my support warrior lacks any abilties that rely on weapon damage, I will always give him a weapon with higher DPS than base damage, as it will be his only source of damage.

With regards to Greatswords/axes/mauls, I have not figured out the intricate differences between them yet.  In DA:O, there was an armor penetration difference between these weapons, but the actual stats for DA:I have not been analyzed yet.

That said, you'll notice there are two damage types for two-handers:  AOE and regular.  Regular seems to do more damage in general, AOE, is... well, AOE.  AOE again, I'd give to a warrior reliant on his basic attack for damage, while mauls I would reserve for one who has plenty of abilities.

mauls are more pure damage. they are going to have the highest single base damage of any of the weapon types.

This is exactly it. If your character's damage output is reliant on basic attacks, use "lighter" weapons, with more DPS than per-hit damage. If you barely ever press R (or whatever button it is for consoles), use a maul.

Cool, thanks. I'm S&B so I'll stick with the sword. (Is it just my imagination, or do S&B abilities recharge much faster than 2-handed abilities? My button-mashing seems to be more effective with this guy than the 2-handed warrior I played a few hours with.)

Mauls are single target damage, while Greatsword/Greataxe are AoE. I've also noticed swords appear to have a longer range than axes.

I thought the axe dps was higher because they have the bleed % haha. Don't think I've seen an axe without the bleed status on it.
