I use tactical view almost exclusively. Is any mage specialization better given that?

Well, Knight Enchanter has button called "I win".

Knight Enchanter feels like a class for non-tactical view. It's very action based. Maybe I'm wrong though.

What i meant was if you choose KE then you won't need tactical view you will just hold attack button ;)

I play in tactical view by choice, not by need. That's why I enjoyed DA:O over DA2, it makes me think it's a strategy game, not an Action RPG.

No need to paly a KE, your've got Viv. Just build your Inquisitor so the AI can control him/her.

Rift Mage then. It is a very AOE based specialization so you will rely a lot on tactical view...

Rift Mage. Many people think that EK/Winter is the most powerful but after many testings I can say without a doubt that Rift/Fire is the most powerful combination (it is almost as durable as EK/Winter but with a lot more damage output) of all and, most importantly, it is very very fun to play (differently from EK/Winter if you want to be invincible with it).

You can cast spells all day with the mana reg passive in Rift, you have much reduced cooldown with the passive on Fire (so you can cast spells one after the other - Fire Mine every 12 sec or so is more than amusing), increased damage on weakened foes (i.e. everyone with the spells in the Rift line), great CC combos, weaken foes open up a lot of options etc.

Especially if you play with tac cam Rift mage is the way to go if you want to rely heavily on spells.

Fire looks like fun tree. But what has kept me away has been Dragons. The tree looks not as useful when fighting Dragons and there are 10 in the game.

The important in the fire line for the Rift mage is the passive that reduces cooldown and maybe Fire Mine (a very powerful combo with the increased damage on weakened foes and Pull of the Abyss). The rest you can decide to use whatever you want as you can cast spells all day over.

Care to share your build ? Here is my Rift Mage setup

  1. Veilstrike
  2. Stonefist
  3. Pull of the Abyss
  4. Fire Mine / Immolate (pick one)
  5. Winter's Grasp / Ice Mine (pick one)
  6. Chain Lightning / Static Cage (pick one)
  7. Barrier
  8. Firestorm / Mark of the Rift (pick one)

Is Stone Fist an impact detonator? If so, that's another point in favor of Rift Mage.

This is the last build I used:

1. Pull of the Abyss

2. Stonefist

3. Fire Mine

4. Immolate

5. Barrage

6. Chain Lightning

7. Barrier

8. Firestorm

EDIT: I forgot that later I removed Veilstrike because I thought it not necessary (didn't use it so much and there are already many other ways to weaken foes) so I switched it with Barrage for more damage output.

But I found well also with this one, skipping Fire Mine and focusing more on storm,

1. Pull of the Abyss
2. Stonefist

3. Veilstrike

4. Immolate (can change with Winter's Grasp)

5. Barrage
6. Chain Lightning
7. Barrier
8. Firestorm

If upgraded yes, it weakens and staggers all enemies in a radius.

What about Winter's Grasp...I know that Barrage is powerful but Winter can be upgraded to an AOE which is what Rift Mages are all about right ?

Winter's Grasp is more a CC spell (which you have enough of and its damage it too low).

Its good to see people getting over the KE fixation. I preffered Rift Mage from the start. Was a great on hard and is still great now on nightmare.

I like a mix of Fire, Lightning and Rift.

1. Fire Mark/Fire Mine (once you get more points).

2. Fire Wall

3. Stone Fist

4. Pull of the Abyss

5. Static Field

6. Barrage

7. Barrier

8. Focus ability

I like having 3 quality CC spells (technically 4 with Stone Fist) combined with strong single target from 3 different elements.

When me and and my bro Solas are in the same party its crazy town.

Either Rift Mage or Necromancer is fine, at this point it's up to taste and playstyle.

Getting the most out of Knight Enchanter involves a lot of tight skill patterns and mashing. Does not play well with Tactical Mode or the AI at all.

That is also why I am not a big fan of it. It requires you to be in action play...

Not all dragons use fire. Some use ice and are weak to fire (like the one in Emerald Graves), some use lightning and are weak to Spirit (the one in the Storm Coast). The only other enemies that are resistant to Fire that i remember are Rage Demons, which are uncommon, and Phoenixes which are only present in one zone. By contrast, most beasts are weak to fire, as well as Despair Demons and some mages. So no, you don't cripple yourself a lot by going Inferno.

Worse comes to worst, respec is dirt cheap, and you can just swap the elemental damage on your staff or get specialized dragon hunting gear. The crafting system is flexible for just that reason.

I'm a Necro/Storm mage(with some points in fire/ice)

Party make up is:

Varric-Ranged obviously

Blackwall- Best tank once he gets Champion imho

Solus- Pure Spirit/Rift mage.

Rarely have to use potions on Hard and mobs drop fast with the walking bomb explosions.

Add to that there are a fair few undead around (Exalted Plains, Fell Mire, etc) and fire is really good against them.

Fire resistance actually really stands out because it is so rare. An Ice staff combined with Barrage seems to handle those situations well.

Outside of Barrage and specializations Mages actually have a lack of good non fire hard hitting spells. I think a lot of it is because Ice tree is so weak.

So Rift Mage seems to win. Sad, as I like Solas too. Guess it's an one mage party now.

Barrier and taunt are good, so is lockpicking, but other than that I've found party setup to be pretty flexible. Two rift mages isn't bad in any way...I'd rather having Solas than Viv since she hates me so much. :/

either rift mage or necromancer's skills are quite usaful, knight enchanter's skill are fine too, except I never get the chance to use resrugant. My party just doesn't die much, so the large AoE of rift mage or massive enermy slow down of necromancer seems much more useful.

PS, I have 3 mages and one shield and weapon warrior in the team. The warrier is stuffed with guard, health and protection, he never dies and tank really well, while 3 dps burn down the mobs.
