Is one generally considered superior to the other? What's the difference?

I honestly like my archer more but I see a lot of peeps play the hunter in the mp. The archer has more access to actual archer/bow talents while the hunter has access to stealth and better traps then what the archer has.

Archer seems to have higher single-target DPS while Hunter gets more aoe and other shenanigans. They're pretty different despite both using a bow and filling a similar niche in the team. As far as which is better, that's a matter of personal preference. Hunter feels a little weak on Routine when you've got overleveled/overgeared teammates slaughtering everything before your traps can matter, but it's much better at higher difficulties if your team is using a pull strategy. Archer is always going to be good.

Thanks for that. I'm wanting to play more ranged since my current characters are all melee, except my keeper but she's just a shield spammer, so I'll probably do archer first then ![]()

Well put. Although in my opinion the Archer is more versatile than the Hunter, especially on higher difficulties.

Have neither to 20, and it depends a bit on the build offcourse, but here is my impressions.
The Archer,
Backline fighter, straight up DPS.
Good dps against everything, due to rapid auto attack, but not great against anything.
Straight up auto attack, with extra high output skills every now and then.
Not much survivability when things go haywire, but has the higher constant damage when of the two.
The Hunter,
Ranged variant of the assassin.
Very mobile due to positional skills, but also looses some constant dps because of positioning.
Good for picking out both single target and groups of add mobs.
Should be behind the enemy lines. Good for kiting when getting aggro.

You mean ranged variant of the Alchemist? ![]()
You're all forgetting the most important difference... the Hunter gets bombs. Discussion over.

I'm looking forward to unlocking the Hunter soon, RNG willing, so I don't have to use mats, as I'm really interested in building an AoE Poison + Mine + Stealth + Explosive Shot Hunter. I think it could be quite interesting. Stealth for utility, running into groups of mobs to drop poison and mines, then explosive shot aoe on top of them.
I enjoy my Archer as more of a sniper.

I want to like hunter but long shot seems irreplaceable.
This exactly. Spammable Longshot is just too universally effective and Mark of Death trivializes big things. Hunter's good, certainly, but Archer's kit is incredible for what he does.
