Verric... the devs clearly hates him... he is a potion sponge!

So, my standard party is usually Cassandra, Verric and Dorin. I like to slide down cliffs, or jump off edges.

Cassandra and Dorin does not seem to mind my chaotically acrobatic movements but Verric always end up hurting... anyone has that problem? Is like I just resupply in camp and jump slide down from the camp, Verric would be the only one half dead when I reach the bottom... and I have to heal him up...

Dwarven short legs? :(

Cast barrier first?

I notice he takes a lot of damage in fights, but I assumed that was a Rogue thing, never occurred to me that it might be a Varric thing, as I don't use the other Rogues.

I've found he's pretty squishy across the board, and despite using Bianca mostly, still tends to find himself in melee range a lot -.-

No... he is half dead not from combat.... just following me down a cliff and he is already half dead. There is no combat...

Barrier should still protect from fall damage.

Poor Varric.  He is, perhaps the MOST fun character of them all.  Also, the most useless, IMO.  Squishy, weak, and slow.

Is it bad that my only contribution to this topic will be: Varric

What I noticed with him when ranged is that he runs in to drop caltrops... I just took all of his short range abilities off the AI control and that seemed to make a difference.

While I had him respeced as dagger wielder, the AI kept moving him in front of the mobs and into cleaves, which it seems to do less often for Cole and Iron Bull. I don't know if it's specific abilities that cause this bahavior but i have to manually move him when he has short range abilities enabled to keep him out of harm's way.

It's no that he's squishy it's that the Ai sucks and there is no ranged behavior. He is constantly in range of all attacks. He is a constant problem in my group and he's the only rogue I have optimized for my group. Even with solas being a full time barrier bish in my group him and varric are always standing in the thick of sh. I'm constantly repositioning them and then they creep right back into melee range.

Am I the only person who NEVER liked Varric in my party? In DA2 and DA:I he is just ineffective all around. He has some okay banter, but he is just weak and not a valuable asset in my party. I will definitely talk with him back at the keep, but he is only in my party when he is required to be, never by choice.

I have Cole and Solas take random damage when I travel around on flat ground. I have no idea what the companions do in the background, but they seems to take fall damage without falling.

The funniest, when I slide down slope, none of them take damage...only me.

The AI overall isn't that smart.  I am playing a dual wielder who does far more damage if i am behind the mob yet Cassandra (my main tank) is always turning them so we are both in front.  I have no idea why this keeps happening with her yet Blackwall doesn't seem to do that (he has his faults too).  I notice that Solas is always up in melee range yet Dorian and Viv have no trouble staying back.  And Cole well I am not even sure what he is trying to do other than constantly die.  Question I didn't see how to change this but is the AI programmed to always attack my target?  Is frustrating when I think Cass is tanking a alpha while I run around and kill archers then the next thing I know I am getting slapped around because Cass is chasing after me and the mob is chasing after her.

Cole's got the same problem. It's hilarious when he's in the party because almost the instant combat begins, everyone's like "Hang on, Cole!" "Someone help Cole!" "Cooole!" Cole also dies in the shallow water a lot, too.

Nobody gives a crap about Varric. "Somebody help Varric!" Never heard it.

Its kind of funny, everyone's talking about how bad Varric is in battle, but OP is talking about just sliding down hills

Despite how much I like him. I gave up on Varric since early on. He just has the bad sense to always be dying from stupid incidents while walking (this can be avoided by using the giant elk to ride) or being dumb in combat. I gave him all the stealth and unthreatening upgrades, besides upgrades to constitution and he somehow still managed to get killed a lot, but not before wasting all the party's potions.

Sera is a better ally on the field and she is actually fun to have around.
