3/26/15 - I finished my Dalish rogue's story and am now on my female Qunari mage. Still having fun. My general final thoughts can be found here: Thoughts through patch 5. I thought it would be less cluttered this way. Yes, I know it's been a long time since I started but that's the way I roll. Seriously, I am always amazed at how fast some of you get through a DA game. I don't think I ever spent less than 100 hours on a DA2 playthrough!
From November:
First, I want to be clear: I am enjoying the game overall. There is a learning curve (at least for me) so I expect my opinions to change in time, for good or ill. These are just my thoughts on the game so far (which isn't very). I am only in the Hinterlands. I will edit these posts rather than add replies in order to keep the categories together and hopefully make more sense. I will turn on the 'show edited' option when I do so just in case somebody reads this. I aim to be polite, okay and sometimes a little bit sarcastic, but never mean or downright rude so if anything comes across that way then please take it as bad communication on my end.
12/14/14 - I like the game. I've recruited everybody but Cole so far and find that I am liking (or disliking) some people more than I anticipated. I've even planned some future romances based on banter that's taken place (as part of their character, of course) and which world-state to use for some (it doesn't matter for all). 9/15/2015 - Now on 4th playthrough and 4th romance. Fun times. I like Cole and I like how they introduce Dorian and Cole depending on whether you ally with mages or templars.
Off topic but ---------------- There is one world-state I really want to use for one of my Inquisitors but not until I know the plot flags are correctly transferred into the game from the Keep. It's a world state where Alistair was executed at the Landsmeet and Loghain died killing the Archdemon. I started with that world-state but then had doubts that is was correctly translated so I switched to my current game. The history of the Fifth Blight, Vol. II doesn't mention either event, just that Loghain was sentenced to execution. That gave me pause because I would think that either when talking to Threnne (Loghain fan) or the history would reference these events. I hestitate at this point to read the forums because so many of the topic titles are spoilers for me. I would appreciate anybody letting me know. 9/15/2015 -Never found an answer to this, but am playing it right now. Hopefully all will be reflected as I wish.
Tactics
Still getting used to these. I'm glad there are preferred tactics but I do miss deciding on the order for myself. In DAO I even downloaded a mod which gives me greater flexibility when setting tactics for my companions. I like the challenge of setting up my people to do what I want when I want.
12/14/14 - I've more or less gotten used to not being able to determine the conditions under which a certain ability is used. I do still miss setting up my own tactics per teammate, especially with AoE abilities and when they are fighting in close quarters. I am playing nightmare and friendly fire is on, if anyone is interested. I haven't healed the breach yet, having fun exploring, and I've avoided dragons so far.
Healing has been a big thing for people, and I understand that. I can also see the point of not allowing you to spam potions or taking a healer with you all the time. A new feature in DAI enables you to 'revive a fallen companion.' This is interesting because you do have to think about whether to use it or not since you are under attack while reviving your friend. But is it any more or less a 'cheat' than carrying 99 health potions?
12/14/14 - With both magical and non-magical revive abilities I don't miss healing spells as much as I thought I might. Each mage has barrier and revive. I also give them each one spell from fire/frost/electric. So far it's working out. I also find that if I give each person a regeneration potion at the beginning of a battle then fewer healing potions are used.

DISLIKES
· Why can’t mages automatically consume a mana potion? What’s the point of the mana/stamina reserve setting if it doesn’t trigger drinking a potion? If not set up in the attributes for each character then maybe something in the main options menu under gameplay:
o regeneration potion à regenerates health à use when health <50% (player sets the percentage)
o mana potion à regenerates mana à use when mana <30%
There aren’t that many potions to which this would apply, are there?
· Why can’t I select all my party members at one time and direct them at the same target or location? 9/15/2015 - found out that I can target somebody and hit 'y' to have my party members attack that one while I either attack it or switch to a different one. I like it.
· I WANT SOME SORT OF TACTICS. I finally reached a difficult battle (difficult for me, anyway. I’m sure for some of you it would be easy-peasy), I’ve been playing on nightmare w/ friendly fire turned on. This is a battle I can’t turn away from until I get stronger or avoid entirely. It’s after closing the Breach and Haven is attacked. Unless I want to wander around the Hinterlands, the Storm Coast and Fallow Mire until I level up some more . . . but that would be tedious since mostly I would be killing random outlaws and creatures. I’ve done everything else I could do.
I definitely miss setting general behaviors to be ranged, aggressive, etc. And I would certainly like to be able to set each companion a short hierarchy of enemies to attack (1 - nearest visible mage/2 – highest rank/3 – attacking Dorian). Even if I couldn’t specify which tactic to use, just prioritizing the enemies would be a big boost. Actually, let me be completely honest, I don’t just miss any real tactics I feel like I’m being forced into battle with one hand tied behind my back. Certainly this one.
When I heard that you could only use 8 of your abilities at a time I was concerned but I was willing to keep an open mind. Never did I expect that I wouldn’t be able to decide when and how to use them. Now that I’ve been unable to work around the tactical limitation I have to say that this is one aspect of the game which I feel is a giant step backwards. Preferring my companions use some abilities over others just isn’t enough. Most of the time the lack of my determining tactics is a minor inconvenience and not even that in short skirmishes. I feel Bioware has hijacked control of an important part of the game. This is a conclusion I come to only reluctantly because I do enjoy so many other aspects of Inquisition.
