What, you mean how the person you sacrificed actually had to run backwards from the exit/inquisitor to fight the giant spider demon?Hawke already sent Corypheus to kingdom come once, doing it a second time wouldn't pose any greater challenge. The moment Hawke got involved the story should have taken a different turn.
And that scene was really poorly storyboarded. Nothing looked even remotely dangerous, nor did there appear to be any reason for leaving Hawke behind. It isn't even clear how Hawke was killed in that scene, or if he even was.
I agree with you on most points. This was the only seriously important choice in DA:I, and it was likely included simply so that the game could have a seriously important choice. There weren't any other dark ritual/ogb/warden dies type choices in the game.
Other possible important choices in the game (hardening Leliana could have serious consequences, or picking the divine) aren't as simple as picking Hawke/Stroud/Alistair/Loghain to die. And the paths to achieving those outcomes are not clearly outlined. One of them can be affected by something as simple as your choice of chantry related dialogue options.
