BioWare surely went for gender equality with this game.

Why in the hell is this post so long? Half of it isn't even needed to make your point, it's just a weak attempt at trying to show that this isn't the same complaining we are hearing over and over again.  <_< Well guess what, it is!

As said, I was not aware that this point was already made. I have already apologized for it. Please also let me apologize for my alleged "attempt" to be weak, it was not my intention to make it so.

Oh, come on. It's not like female audience in media is all like "Oh don't worry, appearances don't matter! The only thing that matters is the inside!". This is just a misconception. Women like handsome men as much as men like handsome women. Nothing new or mysterious here.

Anyway I don't want to get into a feminism / anti-feminism debate here as it would end up ugly, so I will stop here.

I like handsome men but I don't demand hot guys in latex because "fanservice". I respect people and just like I don't want to be trated like a doll I do not treat other people like dolls. I've seen enough bikini armour babes to never want guys go through the same ****

Fanservice for the sake of fanservice is bad, period. Especially if it goes against a characters' personality and concept

Still you could have summed up your complaints in a much shorter post. I don't wanna have to read about how this isn't what it is or how legitimate your arguments supposedly are. If they were legitimate they wouldn't need that, oh and no I am not saying I agree with Sarkeesian and her oppression Olympics brigade either. I think this entire discussion got stupid a long time ago.

Dear OP. You do realize that you're complaining about having the same number of options as gay male characters, lesbian characters and dwarf and qunari straight female characters? It's up to you whether you like your options or not. And that's why so many of us find your complaints to be silly. Because for a long, long time straight male characters usually had more options than the rest of us. And now that straight female elf and human characters have one or two extra romance options, some people act as if it's the worst thing that's ever happened to them.

So the romance options are unfair and not in your favor for once? Deal with it!

I agree with the OP and yes Sera looks like a truck ran over her. Such a cute personality and some designer had to go and wreck it with that goblin face. Should have modeled her after the voice actress who is incidentally gorgeous.

I just hope that the next game...Has equal options

And that for the women love interest, we will have an overweight NPC and a follower who looks like Emille De Launcet...

Then when the complaints come up, I  am going to tell them to...Deal With It !  I mean, its all personality right ?

^ This is why people don't take you guys seriously.

You want equality so long as "equality" means in your favor and not actually equal. You realize the irony, right? OP is asking for equality not superiority whereas your idiotic comment just set the LGBT community back 20 years.

Smooth move.

You want to talk about the personalities now? Good. Let's do that. And let's use the same type of hyperbole that y'all seem to like when you complain about Josie and Cass.

Spoiler

Clearly the female romance options are really bad and I demand to get new ones.

We get it, you're not happy that the two options you have aren't YOUR idea of pretty.  I think they did a great job of spreading things out though with the limited number of romances they could squeeze in.

Do you think every gay guy who plays this game wants a moustache ride or a giant qunari?  No

Do you think every lesbian wants a butterfaced elf chick or josi (who you dislike.)

Is every straight girl going to be into blackwalls beard?  I mean really... the whole "meat" of your post could just be boiled down to: i'm not attracted to the options I have, so i wish they had included more.  What does the fact that other genders and sexualities get a couple have to do with anything??

So its perfectly fine for Cullen, a templar who has been through, quite frankly a lot of shite, look like a male model with a 21st century trimmer to given himself that 5'o clock shadow ?

So it is perfectly fine for Blackwall, a tough, lone wolf warrior, to have a beard that looks like it was trimmed in a salon and waxed and a face that looks baby smooth ?

It is perfectly fine for these men to look like this...The men who are love interests...There is no argument about realism there...

But try suggesting that Cassandra, who is a warrior herself, should have a nice face without scars, much like she did in Dawn of the Seeker...and you get a virtual angry mob, full of righteous social justice hypocrisy, ready to accuse you and shame you that you on the trumped up made up charges that do not find Cassandra attractive...Even though in reality all you want is for her to get the fantastical warrior treatment that Cullen and Blackwall got...

Talk about hypocrisy...

I love this!  "A virtual angry mob!"  I love persecution complexes.

How are the #GamerGate burner Twitter accounts going?

I completely agree, but I don't think it's that big of a deal. Romances are nice but their not the most important part of the game, that and in any game not everyone will find any of the options attractive.

Also to the people pointing out that homosexual characters, and female elves/qunari also only get two options, how many people actually play as those characters? Homosexuals are a tiny fraction of the population, and dwarves and likely qunari are significantly less popular than elves and humans.

Hetero/Bisexual males make up the majority of the playerbase, with Hetero/Bi females making up a significantly large minority.

Being handsome and being in a bikini armor are two entirely different things - unless you only care about the body rather than a pleasant face, and in this case, I wonder who is the more superficial person.

As said, talking about straight options female characters get Blackwall, Cullen, Solas, Iron Bull.

Male characters get Josephine and Cassandra.

That's 4 vs 2. And the fact that "for a long time straight male characters usually had more options than the rest of us" is not a valid excuse to now invert the tendendy toward something that is EQUALLY WRONG. If you strive for equality, you must ask equality. Equality does not mean "let have females have their vengeance". That's hardly constructive or helpful.

I'd like to point out how this game lacks a typical "female" romanceable companion, where by "female" i mean "possessing the typical characteristics of female characters" (think Merrill, Leliana, Morrigan, or Miranda if we want to go with ME).

What are the "typical characteristics of female characters"? I'm trying to find the common element between Merrill, Leliana, Morrigan, and Miranda, and I'm not coming up with anything except "boobs."

Seems to me that BioWare is kinda "forcing" male characters / players to choose (if they want, of course) a necessary "out of the box" approach, since as said there is no "stereotypical" female companion.

Even assuming there's something real here, couldn't the motivation be as simple as Bio not wanting to write that kind of character again?

Sexy body, sexy face - a demand that a character has to be sexy is bad either way. Especially since that's how female characters get treated in majority of media. Sexist as ****

I care less about either. Personality and actions is what matters the most. I mean, I have this weird crush on Sten from DA:O and the first time I saw him in the game I though the was the scariest companion ever (and all qunaris in general till DA2). I am also not fond of bulky men. But I adore him, because he is my kadan

I think op just means all of those characters are very ''feminine'' whatever that may mean.

There's a big difference between complaining about not having enough options when you're coming from a place where you usually lack representation and options. This however is basically some straight guys being annoyed at not having the most number of options.

And for the record: I would prefer it if everyone had equal numbers. I really would, in fact I was very vocal about it on the forum before they revealed the romances. But that doesn't mean that I can't tell people who I think are being silly that they are being silly.

Where did I say they had a common element? It's not like you can compare Merril to Morrigan or Miranda of course - one is "cute", relatively shy and sweet. The others are more "femme-fatale" style, which is also a stereotypical female archetipe since noir moves were created. Like Cullen is the typical blonde, well-fit leader or Fenris the emo / white haired / tormented guy. They're all stereotypes. Point is, there is none of those "female stereotypes" in DA:I. That's all.

Considering your second point, that might very well be. As said, I only stated my point of view, which of course does not mean "absolute truth".

This has been Bioware's mistake.  I don't think "equality" should have much to do with their artistic decisions in general.  It never did until DA2, and then suddenly everybody expects that's how things must be from now on.  I have 0 issues with the number of options available to various sexualities and genders fluctuating game by game.  You can't win them all.  What I don't like is for the romances to be manufactured through some complicated algorithm to make sure everyone's choices are "just so."  What I want is for there to be lots of variety and choice among the LIs.  What I don't want is Dragon Age: Representation.

Again, you are the one bringin out the word "sexy". Why are you so on the defensive? I am just stating my opinion, there is no need to lash out at me like that.

See, this is the problem - everytime something like this is brought out, people get assaulted by oversensitive feminists that feel threatened and shout OMG SEXISM without trying to consider things from the other perspective.

Really, please chill. As said in my original post, I am all for gender equality in all media including videogames. I just believe that this is not the case with DA:I.
