Let me start off by stating that I am REALLY enjoying this game.  I have invested (censored to keep the OP from realizing he has spent WAY too much time, weeds have grown OVER his home, and he has not had an complete nights sleep since purchasing the game) - and have been enjoying every moment of it.  There is still so much to accomplish in the game, and I couldn't be more happy about the the world BioWare has provided here.

That said, why is it that the party members will - most of the time - fail to do a thing until either I attack someone, or I get attacked?  I can understand that this may be a way to prevent your party members from getting involved in a battle that you would rather not partake in at that moment, but there have been many times when I have seen my party members completely ignoring an enemy even when we are in the heat of battle.  Admittedly, I normally use the tactical camera to focus all of my party members unto the most dangerous enemy and then leave them to naturally move within the battle on their own, but this has been touch and go at best.  Sure, they'll focus on the biggest threat at first, but once that has been taken care of, there have been plenty of times when I am running towards the next enemy on the field while noticing that my party members have all apparently stopped to enjoy a mid-battle tea session.

Again, this is a very minor gripe - but it can get a little humorous to be in the middle of a battle and notice your three party members just hanging back and enjoying the show instead of actively participating in it.

Yeah Varric is pretty lazy in my game.

With default behaviours I found that the AI typically just targeted whatever you were attacking.

Beyond that I've only occasionally had issues where I entered combat after taking a route that completely broke the AI's pathfinding, so they just stood on top of a cliff and watched me fight.

I haven't encountered this problem with my party, but perhaps it has something to do with targeting behavior? For instance:

  • As a Rogue, all DPS has their behavior set to attack my target so that no matter where I am on the battlefield, my ranged attackers are always engaged with an enemy. If I choose not to engage an enemy, I'll ensure that the rest of my party's attacking the same target using the radial menu.

Otherwise, I've never had a problem.

Its some what annoying, but I'll take it over Origins where they always ran off to attack an enemy, or the enemy engaged first before I could set my part.  At least now I can set them all up, then use the throwing knife skill from a distance to make them engage

Perhaps that has been my issue, and I need to invest my Rogue character into at least one ranged attack.  As it is, I have been going stealth and infiltrating the enemy so I can immediately hit the group with some poison and set the table for the rest of my party.  It is likely a matter of me not using my ranged characters most effectively by starting off the battle and then jumping in as things progress.

I'll have to play with the system tonight and see if I get better results.

I set the AI to defend Cassandra, but if I pull an enemy no one else does anything (because nothing is attacking Cassandra).

Yeah, this is quite annoying if you play as an archer/mage; by the time my warrior gets to a target to taunt I already received a lot of damage

I am hugely enjoying the Tactical Camera (playing on PS4). I miss the more detailed tactics, though. However, pause-and-play is my main playstyle and the Tactical Camera is perfect for it. I especially love how it's now paused by default so I can have a cup of tea during the big fights and just press the trigger to progress time incrementally. Overall it's my favourite combat of the series. Of course I have a few problems with it too, though, namely:

I have to disable all close-combat abilities for ranged party members, otherwise they'll too often run straight to the enemy. So no Caltrops for Varric and no Mind Blast for Solas. Solas should only use Mind Blast as a last-ditch method to escape the fray in the unfortunate circumstance that he gets surrounded by enemies. He shouldn't running up to enemies to cast it on them.

The ground cursor is a bit wonky when moving it over different height levels of terrain. EDIT: Scrap this one. After 45 hours of playtime I finally just got a tutorial message telling me to use R3 to switch between different height levels...

Selecting Hold Position from the radial wheel doesn't seem to do anything. However, double-clicking the ground cursor to command a party member to hold position works great, so wasn't really a problem after I found out how to do it properly. I shouldn't have been forced to look for a workaround though.

I still haven't worked out how Defend Party Member works. It seems to have unpredictable effects.

Non-controlled party mages spam Barrier unnecessarily over the (generally ranged) party members who least need it.

Otherwise great though.
