The EA Answer HQ contains several topics about the same problem: getting frequent 'disc is unreadable' error messages when playing on the 360: None of them seem to be resolved or even acknowledged by EA or Bioware. There are similar topics about the same problem on other forums.

This is not a matter of faulty discs or consoles. It is happening to a number of people, including me, even with replacement discs, and on consoles which play other games without error. The problem is not fixed by clearing the cache. I and others have tried it, and the problem recurs.

This makes the game unplayable, literally. One would hope that such a serious problem would receive some attention from the developers or publishers, or both, but so far there has been nothing. EA Answers is not answering, so I'm posting this here in the hope that somebody might notice it.

Can you install it? Do have hard drive?

I know that MS has altered their disc format (I took part in the beta). The new format opened up space on the DVD. It may be an MS format issue, and not Bioware's fault.

Maybe find out if the DVD is the new format, or old one. If you're 360 is old, and you didn't upgrade it, it may be the problem.

Thanks, but the 2nd disc cannot be installed on the 360. I have the first disc installed, there were no problems with that.

My 360 is relatively new and has a 250gb hard drive with plenty of space on it. It runs every other game smoothly and without any problems.

The same thing has happened to others, and the problem occurs with brand new discs and even new replacement discs. I think it's something that Bioware and/or EA needs to know about, because it means the game literally cannot be played. Mine crashes in the opening scenes after character creation, every single time.

I have the 250 GB model, which is the Xbox 360S, part of a holiday bundle with Skyrim(like 2 years ago). I haven't had such an issue with the game. Just my two cents. There is a myriad of other bugs and issues in the game, yes. Just haven't had that issue.

Can I just check whether there's any point posting here, or checking this topic? The problem has been reported multiple times on the EA forum, with no answer. That's why I came here.

It's a serious problem, because you cannot play the game at all. The disc is basically worthless. I don't want to waste my time waiting for a fix that will never come. So should I just return it for store credit and play something else, or is it worth waiting?

I'm sorry if I sound highly strung about this, but i've been so looking forward to this game for many, many months, and now I finally have my hands on it, it's broken.

If you're asking my point, it is more that it is most likely a similar model. With the same game. Which if identical could mean there even is a slight possibility that it could be the xbox unit itself, if multiple discs were tried, and it wasn't them. Granted it is possible it could be the game too, or maybe the install went bad, since a lot of the content is in the install. Just because more than one person has that issue, doesn't mean it knocks out those possibilities.  It is like taking two identical computers, both with same hardware, running the same OS and 1 runs the game while the other doesn't. You troubleshoot and knock out possibilities.

I appreciate you trying to help. But the thing is, this exact problem has been happening to a bunch of people all over the world. And many of them say they've replaced disks, cleared the cache, etc etc. Just like I have. But it makes no difference.

And it's been reported to Bioware and EA many times. And there's been no response. Zero. Not even 'we'll look into it and get back to you'.

This is a bug which actually makes it impossible to play the game at all. I can't get beyond the first few minutes. Isn't that a serious flaw? Isn't it an embarassing thing to happen to the product you've released?

I don't know - in my job, if my work was this distastrously bad, I think I'd be ashamed.

This wouldn't be a problem if we were able to install the play disk.

Had this problem once before. I deleted my disc 1 install content, re-installed it and then cleared my system chache and it's working again for now.

Thats my first guess is that it would be the installation itself. since that holds a lot of the data. For the OP, you said you cleared the cache, but did you try re-installing the game? Like the person above stated.

Thank you both! I uninstalled and reinstalled Disc 1, and it seems to be working! I've made it past the first big fight with no crashes, so (fingers crossed) it looks ok. So this story has a happy ending.

It would be good for this method of fixing the problem is publicised. I know a lot of people are struggling with it.

That was actually what I was trying to suggest with my second post, but I guess the wording was poor. Glad it worked :P. Probably something didn't copy over properly the first time, which is why it kept crashing in the same spot.  (Since that most likely has the bulk of textures and other things.)

Glad it's fixed for you, I'll try posting this solution elsewhere to see if it works for others as well.

Do you know whether this will delete save files or render them useless? I'm having same error as op however it wont let me go to places in the game except for hold, hinterlands and storm coast. Therefore I can't proceed in plot and I'm about 40 hours in. I want to try this and see if it works for me but worried it'll delete my save files or something.

My PC game came with four DVDs. Three were 8GB and the 4th 6+GB. This means they are dual layered.

Question for 360 and PS3 owners

Does your CDROM reader/player support dual layered DVDs? ie: above 4GB ?

No. Your saves will be fine.

Maybe find out if the DVD is the new format, or old one. If you're 360 is old, and you didn't upgrade it, it may be the problem.

Now, that's interesting.

Bioware's responsibility is to ensure that their game disc is properly formatted for the target media drive. Which means, at the very least, that the supported disc media format(s) are part of the system specs.

Dual layered DVDs have been in use on consoles since the PS2. Bluray is the one that is a bit "newer". But thats a 25 gb disc (roughly unless you get dual layer). The install disc for the Xbox 360 installs around 7-8 gb, plus the play disc for after you use the one Install disc (I own it for the 360). So it is dual layer, which is just fine.

People who do have the error probably have just some bad install files like the OP. And most likely need to re-install. Unless there is something wrong with the disc like rot, a bad burn, or scratched/cracked. Or the console itself though that would make problems more persistent and be there with other games as well.

I've cleared cache, used a blank hard drive, reinstalled- tried 2 brand new discs after exchange at shop... still doesn't work and all my other games do.
