@Jester: and Fire wall for that matter also ignores FF. All enemies ignore FF. For FF to be something I feel is done right a LOT of things have to change. Chain lightning needs to not pick friendly targets, Fire wall needs to actually you know, HARM your own forces, and enemies need to start hurting them selves.

I honestly don't remember how FF was broken in DA2 as to why you think DAI version is better but its currently broken.

I like friendly fire when I *want* to kill my companions off. Used it to great effect in DAO on a dark warden.

Playing Nightmare + FF here.

My advice: don't use AOE abilities. I haven't killed my own party a single time yet. Just use mage for barrier and support instead of AoE lightning and you'll be fine.

If an implementation of ff effectively makes it so that the best tactic is not using any aoe abilities, then that implementation of ff ****** sucks.

I have it on, but my main problems with it are:

1. AoE templates are inaccurate. Spell effects will extend significantly (well, significant if you're placing them danger close) beyond the visual indicator. See Immolate, both mine spells, Pull of the Abyss, etc.

2. There is no indication in writing as to whether or not a spell causes friendly fire. Every description will refer to the spell working on "enemies", regardless of whether or not it is subject to the rule of friendly fire.

3. What spells actually cause friendly fire seems random and arbitrary. Chain lightning causes fire, while AoE Stone Fist does not. Pull of the Abyss affects both enemies and allies, but Veilstrike can be spammed without any worries, but Lightning Bolt will knock back everybody close to the main target, friend or foe. There's just no consistent logic here.

PotA is amazing for that.

I like FF only when I have the overhead tactic view to the level of DA:O. In DA:O, I disabled companion AI and micromanaged everyone. I had a blast. It always felt ridiculous to me that you can throw down an inferno storm over your own party and only have enemies effected. It made me stategize more when casing a spell (crap my tank is in there, gotta move him out first)

But of course tactic view stinks in DA2 and DA:I so I didn't use it anymore.

I was introduced to the tactical party rpg genre largely through Dragon Age: Origins, a game for which friendly fire is just the default--so accepted as to not even be worth commenting on.  I've since devoured every game in that genre I could get my hands on and for almost all of them, friendly fire is just what happens.  So turning it off makes me feel both like I'm not playing the genre and using cheats.  It's just how I learned to play this game type.

Unfortunately, playing DAI it feels like the tactical party RPG playstyle is much, much, much less supported than the action RPG playstyle.  Dragon Age 2 may have been a backwards step for me, what with friendly fire only being enabled on nightmare, but at least that game had clear builds and companions that were explicitly designed for friendly fire and nightmare difficulty.  This game, on the other hand, feels like they left friendly fire out of the design process entirely and then later realized people like me would be upset...so they just haphazardly threw in friendly fire as an option without supporting it at all.

I'm playing with FF on, but I don't know why, because it harms the coherence of the setting.

Enemies are not subject to FF. They cannot hit themselves. Even DA2 got this right, but for some reason Inquisition doesn't.

There needs to be a way to enable FF for enemies.

I have been playing on Hard with FF, but I think I am going to switch it off. It is just so badly implemented that it adds nothing meaningful. Which skills do FF is completely random so it doesn't aid immersion. 2H warriors are particularly difficult to manage, and I lose about half of the mage skill trees.

The game was obviously not intended to be played with FF. It was only put in to appease some fans. So I will now switch it off. I am disappointed.

You need to turn them off in tactics for AI, and use them yourself. The AI will always cast AoEs centered on one target, a human player can position the targeting area to only hit the enemies even if you have multiple melee in your party. FF on begs for tactical camera, it's not made for action styles.

It's not the best tactic; just MY advice. My personal playstyle is to systematically kill one enemy at a time, and AoE damage doesn't really suit that. Massive single target DPS, however, does the job.

If you do use AoE spells, then be careful with them. Obviously you don't want to cast lightning on enemies when your tank is near them, unless he/she can tank that aswell.

The problem with Friendly Fire ist not the (un)ease of usage, but the inconsistency within the game mechanics:

a) Enemies are not subjected to FF,

B) no consistency regarding the skilsl that cause ff. Fire Mine does trigger it, bit Wall of Flames does?

Seriously Bioware. How can that sort of stuff, easy to code and fast to fix, pass QA?

Friendly fire is shite in this game.

How can something be considered friendly fire when it only affects your party but it does not affect the enemies ?

This^ I'm currently using FF on NM and had to do the same

To all those folks who like to play with friendly fire, bless your hearts. But it definitely isn't for me.

Reason #17654 why I play without friendly fire:
I crafted armor for my rogue with a chance on hit to cast caltrops for 50% weapon damage. That coupled with a Thousand Cuts is a fun way to leave the entire battlefield littered with caltrops.

My armor also drops caltrops. It does no FF; I don't think any traps do.

The game is very inconsistent with its FF; I recommend saving the game before picking a skill and trying if it has FF. A very tedious thing to do, but there's not much else we can do about it.

Before we get a patch that will SPECIFY which abilities cause FF, it's just trial and error.
