*SPOILERS* Focus meter. How the hell do you build it?

So I finally reached Skyhold.
I received the mark of the rift when you walk that tunnel.
After discovering Skyhold, all its areas, meeting hawke. I've decided to go back to the hinterlands and close off the two remaining open rifts.
Upon doing so, I noticed that my other Mage Viviene (spelling?) automatically was granted the knight enchanter tree. Cool. Awesome. I still have not received the option of choosing a specialization tree as of yet. I Don't know if you trigger this option by accepting one of the missions in the war table. Which quite a lot now opened up. I guess I'll find out eventually.
So anyways back to my dilemma. I remember when I was walking through that underground tunnel after losing haven. It mentioned you build up focus meter by attacking or was it killing? Enemy creatures. Which, I have killed several and still my separate focus meter is barely filling up.
I know I am doing something wrong, can somebody help me correct this. Thanks.

Your companions get their specs automatically, you open up the three possible quests by hitting level 10 and doing a war table mission that involves bringing in esteemed trainers for the inquisitor.
Focus builds by doing damage, IIRC. I never really have a shortage of it, and I use mark of the rift a ton.

You should have 3 focus bars, by default once you gain a focus ability you can only fill the first bar. The second and third have to be unlocked via Inquisition Perks. Which are used for T2 and T3 of your specialization focus ability.

I believe focus builds on death of monsters and performing combos with your companions.
To unlock specializations you have to be level 10 and progress far enough into the story, not entirely sure which missions unlock it, but it will be in the war table under an operation named "Specialized Training" in the Fereldan section. Do it and you'll bring 3 trainers and you can pick up all three quests but only turn in one. Not sure if you can have 2 like DA:2 or Origins.
After you talk to the trainer you want to train with you'll have to find some materials and a certain item, then craft it in the requisiton(spelled?) table. Mats like the Bloodstone for Necromancer can be found in Exalted Plains which is a level 11-15ish area. Nevarran Skulls are found off the undead in the Mire, and you can find the books laying around Skyhold sometimes(Where I found mine), off other mages as random drops or bought from the book vendor in the Orlais(spelled?) city.

It takes a long while to build it. The meter builds up slowly. At least for me.
I do not know if it's because I am on nightmare difficulty or what. Either case, good knowledge shared here. Thanks guys.

That makes one of us. The bar builds super slow for me.

So, I have a hard time telling where my Focus rate/rank is located. Hell, I have a hard time telling where how much Mana or Stamina I have.
I tried doing a quick search for images and flipped through my guidebook numerous times, but I haven't spotted a detailed HUD image.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

The blue/yellow circle around your skills represents your mana and stamina. I play on PS4 so I don't know if it's different on PC. When a spell is red, it's off cooldown but you don't have enough mana. Pressing the button will highlight the amount of the circle you need to fill in red.
Your focus bar is on the top-right of the mana/stamina circle. It's a bunch of little tick marks.

I'll check this out tonight after work (on my PS4!), but I think I know what you mean.
Appreciate it!

I've been wondering this to, the mark of the rift focus ability is always greyed out for me and I can't use it. I think I had enough focus, maybe I need to kill more things?

The focus meter never builds up quickly. You shouldn't expect to be able to use your focus abilities every fight. Don't think of them as an integral part of your standard combat routine, think of them as being there for you when the going gets tough - and if you don't use them on simple fights, they will be. As you progress further into the game, you are likely to be able to use them more often. You can use equipment that increases focus gain if you really want to maximize focus generation, which isn't really necessary, but it is an option, and, perhaps more importantly, as your party gains more levels you gain more abilities that can set up or detonate combos, so you are going to be making more combos on a regular basis even if you let the AI control your companions - probably one or more even in minor skirmishes.
And combos are important for focus generation.
If you intend to make use of the focus abilities in the first place you'll probably want everybody in the party to have his focus ability and the very first ability point the main character gets after gaining the mark should go to the ability in your new rift-tree that increases focus gain from combos.
