Dear Bioware team, especially dear interface designers,

my name is Bastian and I am a graphic designer from Berlin who loves games ans also typography.
So first, Dragon Age Inquisition is a beautiful and super game! I like it very much and I´m looking forward to perfect fantasy gaming evenings.

But…
I really want to dive into the Story and the side quests and so on, but I don’t want to read the long texts written in capital letters!
Why you wrote all the running texts in capital letters? Also explanations and so on.
No book is printed in only capital letters and that has a special reason.

For year and years, we learned to read words and texts. We, the human, recognize the form of the word, sometimes even text phrases.
The upper and lower case helps us to read faster, better and more fluently.
In Dragon Age Inquisition I feel like a little kid, which tries to decrypt the words, letter by letter…
(By the way, I´m sitting 3 meter in front of an 50“ TV and I have good eyes).
It´s proven, from any professional, that texts written in upper and lower case are much better to read!

Dragon Age Inquisition has a plenty amount of little stories, wich are designed by committed writers, who want the gamer to read their stories.
With the capital letter many gamer will skip the texts and so won´t read them.
Thats sad.
The universe of Dragon Age is so interesting and the stories should get the attention they deserve.

This problem also affects to Quest texts, explanations and so on.
Really, I don´t understand, why the short words, like back or save or what ever, are written in upper and lower cases (good to read, but if i only must read one word and this word or function I learned by heart, I don’t have to read it anymore, I know its there, I know its form) and on the other side long texts are written in upper case. I want to read them, but I can´t read them like a book or a magazine. Only upper case text is anoying and hard to read.

Ok, my suggestion, please add a function in the options, where you can switch between text in only capital letters or text with upper and lower case (or fix it with upper and lower case texts).
It would really improve the reading!
Perhaps you can add a function to scale the text size?
Technically it should be no problem, because most of the texts have a scroll bar, so you have to scroll more if the text is getting longer or bigger.

Perhaps you, Bioware, had some reasons (TV settings, PC, xbox one and so on),which I can’t imagine, but I think you can do it much better!

A lot of games have problems with the right typography, but Dragon Age Inquisition did prominent things wrong (excuse me executive designer ;) ).
So, I really hope, that some designer will answer me or my suggestions will be taken seriously.

I am interested in a perfekt game with a perfekt Graphic Design!
Graphic design or typography should have more attention in developing games, especially at a big company like Bioware!

What do other gamers think about the typography?

thx, best reguards bastian

I can't agree more.

I frequently find myself starting to read but then giving up.

This is a pretty basic usability issue. Your team has produced this amazing content, please make it easier to read!

Thx adiaa!

Nobody else?
Bioware statement?
Easy change in the next patch?

Please, bioware, for a million dollar produktion, you can pay a good designer to do the interface or typography...

Also random inserts from Sera would be much more fun to read if they were "truly" handwritten instead of a description of what she had done to it(like one that says that she wrote her name many times on a letter, her comments about what Josephine had written, etc).

But then again, I don't know if this is asking too much and most likely won't be a priority for Bioware, perhaps someone can mod it?

Yes, I've worked for companies in advertising for years. Strange decision ...

Yeah, that might be a problem, the priority...
But what else has the interface designer to do?

I totally agree, going all caps was a bad idea. It doesn't particularly fit with the theme of the game either.

It's probably too late to fix, though.

In theory they just need to swap the font.  And then in places where label and such should remain all caps, they could just type it that way.

I cant imagine they would have spacing issues, Though stylistically it will change the look of the game significantly.

Even if there were just an option we could enable it would be better though.

It doesn't bother me at all, actually.

The problem I have with it is that the text is too small. I have to lean forward to be able to read it easier, and my tv isn't exactly small.

Just my 2 cents in an "old" thread: I can't agree more with bassi.

I know that it will not be fixed, but as it's ruining a big part of the enjoyment I have with this game, I have to say it:

That choice was BAD, VERY BAD, INCREDIBLY BAD !

- Where are the books IRL written only with capital letters ?

- Any newspaper, any magazine ?

- Tell me about websites whose texts are written this way ?

On boards and internet forums, everybody (almost, I guess) knows that WHEN YOU WRITE IN ALL CAPS, IT'S LIKE SHOUTING. Nobody is aware of that at Bioware ? Oh, it's a game, so it doesn't matter ? Wrong.

So, yes: I dislike reading all this text in capitals, it's even PAINFUL, so much that I'm skipping all lore, all letters, all history, all quest info, and it's also VERY ENNOYING to be forced to read ALL THESE DIALOGS in capitals !

I just wonder what's gone wrong with Bioware: who made this F..... CRAZY choice ? And everybody agreed ? That's just beyond my understanding...

(yeah I know, my screen name is in caps: but it's just an acronym)

I have complained about this too. To me, it is such a disservice to their writers and should be fixed out of respect to their hard work and skill.

I literally do not read anything from the game beyond the dialogue which is fine. All the rest is just too hard on the eyes

=> duckley: you're damn right. I wonder what David Gaider thinks of that. Maybe he likes it and will publish his next book in ALL CAPS.

AND YOU SHOULD TOO !
