I wanted to try traps but I really need Varric to do  some good damage too, is possible?

Unfortunately this game (like other Dragon Age) is not made for traps

you can't prepare a path full of traps and then make enemies pass over them because the trap doesn't last for long time.

Also if you want to do this you should be able to move alone but your allies always follow you even if you order them to keep a position. If you go too far they will run to you.

I think that setting one trap + the one from sabotage is not enough to wast so much time setting them

I've been playing Varric with Artificer/Archery spec (and stealth), and he's a great addition to my party.

Elemental mines are amazing for damage and status effects. Try combining them with a mage using the upgraded Static Cage ability (from Storm Tree), the damage is massive, especially effective against groups of enemies.

Spike Trap is very useful as well, you dont have to set it up before a battle. I like using it with the upgrade passive that let's you stay stealthed after casting it. When an enemy closes in on Varric, Stealth to drop aggro, then lay a trap (with +50% damage from Stealth) to damage and temporarily take the enemy(ies) out of the fight.

Overall I think the design team did a great job with the Artificer spec.

As long as you're willing to micro Varric every single fight, sure it is.
