I'm calling it the Stroud Bug. The entire quest was a bit twitchy from the beginning, but Stroud takes the cake. When I get to the Western Approach bit of the quest, the cutscenes "freeze" to a certain degree. I have tried simply skipping the the dialogue to get it to progress, but to no avail. I know it's not just me, but I can't seem to find a quick fix and it is literally driving me up the wall. Like I don't even want to play right not, because the fact that I can't progress with the story sits in the back of mind like an angry bug, and I keep blaming Stroud. I know it's the quest, but it keeps freezing on him. I've done everything I think of... please help me, preferably before I go crazy. :)

Which platform are you on? It may assist the developers in isolating the problem for you. Or, have you documented players from multiple platforms running into similar conundrums? I recall seeing a post or two about this quest having cutscene issues for other people as well, but I can't currently remember where I saw that, unfortunately.

it's happening to me as well.

XBox 360. I exited the game and reloaded the save, but no.

You have to skip through the dialogue just to get the quest to progress at all. But it completely freezes right after the initial fight. Hawke and Stroud get into a spat, and then Stroud says that knows where the enemy went.

And points.

And the quest just STOPS. you cannot skip dialogue. Stroud just stares back at you, waiting...

Mocking...

I'm actually trying to be calm about this, however....

This is actually stopping the narrative from progressing. This isn't a small skip in the sound file or an annoying collison detection error.

The game has ground to a halt and cannot progress past this point.

Alternate "Here Lies The Abyss" variable spoilers:

Spoiler

(But seriously, I hope it's resolved for you. I think I did hear this happening on Xbox 360 earlier, so maybe that'll be the only place it occurs, which will make the process of addressing the bug easier.)

This is happening to me on the PS4 and its infuriating. I can't progress through the story, I can't even leave the conversation and try again. I've tried restarting the game but it's the same every time.

In addition I've had to skip about half the dialogue just to progress. A patch needs to be released to fix this issue. It's literally game breaking.

Now that I vented that frustration, I'm going get something to eat.

I've looked kinda all over and found that the bug is definitely multi-platform.

This solution from the EA forums helped.

It worked for me on the 360.

And it essentially is: do not skip any dialogue when the scene freezes.

It will probably take about 2 minutes, but eventually both Hawke and Stroud will say their lines. Just wait out the delay without pressing anything.

I had to do this twice: once at the beginning of the scene and once after the combat, but I've completed this portion of the quest now.

It may not work for everyone, but it worked me and others have reported it working as well.

Just wait for a minute. This happened to me as well. I waited for about a minute or so and the scene progressed itself. So see if waiting works.

Well, I'd rather try this than not play the game at all. Worth a shot.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Stroud would just stop speaking. I tried press the square button to skip the scene but it didn't work. So I reloaded my auto save and tried it again. It happened again. So I thought it was a gamebreaking bug. But I just waited it out as I was cussing up a storm. I was able to get by it

I just think now that the game is out, Bioware can identify what they may have missed. For a game of this size it clearly understandable. The game is awesome. Just some audio and cutscene issues and maybe some Dragon boss fights that slow everything to a crawl.

This bug also appears on the PS3 with Alistair instead of Stroud.

Tried the waiting-it-out fix. After about 45 seconds to a minute the scenes continued and without any more stops. This absolutely works though I still think there needs to be a patch to prevent them from stopping for so long.

Same thing happened to me on XBox One. I just kept mashing X for awhile and the dialogue proceeded, but it was obvious that it had skipped a sizeable chunk of the chat.  It occurred to me with Stroud in both the cave where you meet him, and at the ruins with the Wardens.

I could not say goodbye to Stroud fast enough, lemme tell ya.

I am having the exact same problem as the OP on my Xbox One, so thanks for the suggestion. I hope it works.

It happened to me on the PS4. It made that whole section of the game incredibly difficult to follow, even when I waited and didn't skip, (when skipping 'worked' it skipped the line after Stroud's glitched line'). It wasn't just Stroud, (Hawke and the Tevinter guy were affected at least once each), but it was pretty much every line he had that got it stuck. I think it was fine when we were

Spoiler
but otherwise, practically every line for him was bugged.

(Gaming DA: Inquisition on PS4)

Experienced same things with other cutscenes aswell - for example the Courting of Cassandra - where the advancement after a finished sentence just makes a complete stop, no progression what so ever in the cutscene. But in "Here Lies the Abyss" (when I'm thinking about it, then actually most of the cutscenes involving Hawke been buggy) it takes the step to an even bigger level. I managed to get through the cutscene, but... I have NO IDEA what was said, since I had to press "Square-button" every so often..

I hope that this and other cutscenes will get a solution asap, cause this is a golden pearl (and GOTY for me) that deserves the love. It is really annoying, and frustrating to miss out on storyline cutscenes... it's like skipping chapters in an epic (fantasy-)book.

Just to pile on and make sure Bioware understands that this problem persists in more than just the Stroud/Hawke CS early on in the Mission but also is an issue during the ritual scenes later on during the actual "operation".  Been sitting waiting for it to move for about 10minutes.

This has happened to me several times on the xbox one. I see no way to fix it other than skipping the dialogue (something I would NEVER do by choice :( )

Just adding my 2 cents.

PC version on hard, just finished the fight and nothing happens afterwards, no conversations, no where to go, nothing.

Stroud & Hawke just standing around with the group and still nothing after waiting 15 minutes. Instance barriers are still up, so the only thing to do is reload from last save and that doesn't work either. Looks like progression ends here at level 14.........................

same here, I've just tried to do the 'Here lies the abyss' mission and Stroud kept freezing, I managed to make the conversation go on with X (skip) until a point in which no matter what button I push, the game is stuck on Stroud's face -.-

I'm playing on xbox 360

Do not press the skip button or it will skip lines of dialogue while it's loading the scene. Just wait about a minute and things should play out normally.
