Oh they can fight, sure. They can't tank for **** though.

Aside from taunting, mine tanks just fine. And he's got a ton of Constitution.

So you waste precious skill points on constitution(for mages), meaning you now got both a mediocre tank and a subpar dps'er all rolled up in one. Just bring a warrior tank and let the mages do what mages does: control and burst.

I've been experimenting with crazy party setups (on normal).  I'd need to keep experimenting every few levels to accurately gauge the differences, but I was a little surprised.

Trying PC (mage) + Cassandra (S&S) + Iron Bull (2H) + Blackwall (2H), results in fast, bloody combat.   Fights end faster than with other groups. I often lose Blackwall before the fight ends, but it doesn't matter, because all that's left is mop up.

Mage + Vivienne + Solas + Sera (archer), was slow and more difficult, but survivable even for tough (by level 10 standards) fights.  I doubt it would work on Nightmare, but it wasn't the disaster I expected.

I know that on paper Rogue's should have the highest DPS, but I'm wondering if that only works out in certain fights, or higher levels, or with a lot of micromanagement.

Archers can be used without too much supervision, but anyone with daggers is a complete potion suck unless you're babysitting them constantly.

I run 3 warriors in my party with 1 mage.

Mainly Cassandra as a tank, Iron bull as a 2H DPS and Me as a Reaver DPS. A Mage with barrier, usually Dorian or Solas depending on the objective.

My team burns through everything, took down the Ferelden Frostback at level 12 in 10mins or so without a single death and using 2 potions. (Hard difficulty)

Iron Bull hits so hard with his reaver spec coupled with 2H skills, don't trust him to use Dragon Rage though. Cassandra always has her guard and boosts everyone's guard from Vanguard spec.

My main character specs in Reaver + Vanguard. So he lives on guard rather than HP, allowing me to Dragon Rage everything and never die. Actually he does, when I forget to use devour to replenish HP and die to Dragon Rage that is.

Just beat Hivernal on hard as KE with Blackwall, Iron Bull and Sera playing IB only during the fight, his dps is insane but you really need him to have guard and barrier on him otherwise his squishy as hell.

i run a dagger assassin rogue....  my dps is awesome compared to bull, but i have to constantly monitor him as he cant build guard like bull can...  My rogue is especially squishy vs dragons.  My usual line up is tank: blackwall  dps: My rogue  dps: cassandra 2 hand  and dorian.  I find with 2 hand warriors you have to babysit them or give them accessories to help enhance their guard, as they have trouble building it.  I usually give the better armors to my 2 handers so they can have a little more protection, as my tank has a sh*t ton of guard to compensate for him.

Just for the record I had to use Vivienne to kill the last dragon in the Emprise because all my other characters kept dying. See the IGN vid called "turning Vivienne into a godless killing machine". As long as she's swinging she's not dying.

I just wanted to give my 2 cent as a Nightmare player. Personally, anyone who says that warriors are crappy, they can go to hell. My first playthrough I did a dwarf s&s class with ironbull as a s&s and solas & vivienne as support.
I only set Viv to cast barrier automatically, and controlled Solas' barrier manually. Between the both barriers & revives along with Bull & my main char racking up Guard inbetween barriers, I was able to take on most enemies several levels above my own.
Personally, and I am speaking from my experience, i've played bull as both S&S and 2H, and I think he works better as a S&S. With his reaver spec, he can pull in more damage than any of your other tankers. True he may not be as meaty as Blackwall or Cassa, but as long as you have a mage in your party you're golden.
Truthfully I found rogues the hardest to play with. They required to much attention and oversight and used up to many of my potions. I only brought one (varric usually) on main missions i couldnt repeat (incase of locked doors/chests). Most of my big battles though have been faught with my main S&S, Ironbull, and Blackwall for normal people/creatures or Cassa if I knew i was going up against demons. So normally I ran with either 3 warriors and a mage or 2 warriors and 2 mages. TRUE the damage they deal isn't spectacular... but you cannot argue that warriors provide the most stable damage while still being able to take a hit. The problem with rogues and mages is that as soon as you pull to much agro, you find yourself running until your tanker relieves you. So you may be able to, for example, drop 500 damage in a matter of seconds, but you end up running around trying to stay alive for 30 seconds to a full minute and in that time a 2H warrior (or even an S&S) can rack up that ammount of damage in the time you spend making your Rogue/mage run around. With the exception of a KE of course. Warriors are still best at taking damage, but a properly trained and equipped KE could go up against most creatures and hold their own.
Again, my experience is on nightmare... and truthfully if you are playing on anything less than hard, you really dont need to worry about how to spec your companions really or your team composition.

Sorry that was kinda long. But to answer your question for sure, 2H iron bull isnt useless but I feel (from experience) he provides a steadier damage output without loosing so much health and wasting your potions as a S&S spec. 2H isn't useless and the damage they deal is envious. I would take 2H over a Rogue in Inquisition any day, not because they do more damage than rogues but because the damage they give to the damage they can take ratio is higher than a rogues. But on nightmare I am still honestly having a hard time using a 2H warrior. It is hard to rack up guard against ranged units, and archers and mages can make short work of any 2H warrior if not careful. They tend to try and taunt bad guys and en up using a lot of potions (similar to a dagger rogue). If you are playing nightmare, S&S. If lower than hard, it doesnt really matter. Either way just have fun with the game and do whatcha want. I personally take pleasure in the contrast of my party's tankers being the shortest (my custom dwarf) and the tallest (ironbull) on my team xD

Iron Bull is usually the first one to die and keep dying, He was pretty useless in my playthrough
