Hi guys If it would be possible a bit of help.

I am deciding between two magic staffs they are:

1.

Witch lightning staff 57 damage (COMMON staff - 13 level)

- 35 electricity damage

- + 9 magic

2.

Magister Lightning staff 76 damage (rare staff - 16 level)

- 47 electricity damage

- + 34% barrier damage bonus

- +5% stagger on hit

- 10% chance to inflict chain lightning damage at 50% weapon power

Now why am I even thinking about this one when the second one is rare and has runes on it....?

Because the common one can get runes added and it gives +9 magic power which brings my total magic from 25 to 34.

Now how much of an effect magic power even has? Because i mean this is some serious boost. So if someone can help me with this and to understand how this works and best way to proceed would be grand.

Its not exactly vital since I am level 14 soon to be 15 and havent even got to the part in the story where empresses is warned about the attack on her so basically I just got my skyhold but I am the type who likes to walk around do quests and kill stuff I guess :P

All your spells' damage is based off weapon damage, which is the 35 vs. 47 lightning damage. The extra 9 magic on the first staff shouldn't even come close to the extra oomf your second staff will provide.

Strange thing, but thanks for your help, so basically I mostly just look at the damage weapons are producing and only look at the bonuses if the damage is "close"

Is that right?

You can test this very easily, just blast a target with a spell, note the damage, reload, and blast it with a different staff same spell.

On that note, I think you get +.5% attack per point of Magic/Willpower, which is very literal = +x% attack is +x% damage from your weapon damage * spell damage ratio.

Also, I am pretty sure the damage from runes has no effect on how hard your spells hit.

Have you looked to see if you can craft something better than those?

Attributes are useless in this game if my theory is correct and the lyrium potion isnt bugged. At lvl11, I used a lyrium potion which doubled my magic stat. My spell damage increased by 15 points (230'ish to 245'ish) Meaning 30 magic gives you ... 0.5 damage from 1 magic.

Let that sink in a bit. 1 magic gives 0.5 spell damage.

Meaning 100 magic would increase your spelldamage by 50 dmg!!!! Attributes = useless = confirmed.

Yes but not yet, because I am very early in the story and just got my arcanist as a matter of a fact I will however be crafting soon enough I have a shitload of materials to use :P

and yes attributes having little effect is i guess not so surprising seeing as you cant effect them as you level up but strange as well
