I don't know why I'm facing giants, red templars, and darkspawn that are at least two classses above my own. Is that supposed to happen because now I have to find ways to hit these guys from a safe distance.

I really think you have to spend some time leveling up before you seal the breach to proceed without a lot of trouble afterwards. Unless, of course, you are a master at combat.
