side quests and the companions quests are far superior to anything we have been giving in any prior DA game, the content of a single companion is probably double that of 2 companions from previous DA games if not more.

you dont need to do every side quest, i would actually recommend not doing so, roleplay your character its a damn rpg for makers sake, pick and choose what side quests compliment your character and do them, i did that on my first play through and got to lvl 20 pretty easy and thats more than enough to complete the main story.

problem im seeing with ppl on these boards is there to used to the linear of DA:O and DA2 an have zero idea what to do with a semi-open world game

Then they shoul've not filled for the maker sake the game with 90% of pointless Skyrim maps.

That's a waste of time for dev and players.

TBH there's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much reading in this game, I often find myself complaining about a lack of story content :(

Too much reading?

Never play the BG games, my friend.  :pinched:

And as for companion quests, I've gotten them for Sera, Dorian, Varric, Cassandra, even Josephine and Leliana

I think I phrased that wrong, I meant to say that at least some of the side quests, or a majority of them, shouldn't be just reading a diary entry or a note. :)

You guys should go back and play DAO and see how much more alive the world is even though it looks like crap, more people to interact with with REAL conversations, even the unimportant people had more to say than the side quests in this game.

Agreed. For such a big, beautiful, and detailed world DA:I sure feels dead. Outside of Skyhold/the main plot/companion stuff it feels so empty and lonely. The npcs that you can actually talk to are extremely few and far between and will just give you a fetch quest or small info dump (why are you holding this fort, what is this place, etc...) there is no real interaction like in DA:O. I miss the little quests like helping Camen and Gheyna, finding Bevin in Redcliffe and keeping/stealing/returning the sword and deciding to help him and his sister or not and to what degree. Same with Bella and Lloyd, the duel in Denerim with that knight (Ser...Landry?) who knew Duncan, the crime wave quests, the quests for the Denerim Guard captain, etc... They made the world feel more alive and made me care. DA2 lacked this but the game was so small and had so many flaws that it wasnt as noticeable. With DA:I it really sticks out. :(

I'm not that far into the game yet (13h) but I noticed this as well. Outside of the main plot there simply is nothing happening. Most of the companions are boring (and don't have any side quests to them), no interesting stories hidden in the world outside of letters, no intriguing characters. Hell, even the companion introductions are mostly lazy as ****.

But the landscapes are awesome and the main plot a lot of fun so far. So pretty much the opposite of Skyrim, where the world is interesting but the main plot sucks. Guess we can't have both, not even from BioWare.

Companions all have quests, they require a certain amount of approval, and I think for Sera you need to do her war table mission. You also need to reach Skyhold first. YOU need to talk to them for those missions, they don't approach you until you do.
