So I went into the game intent on romancing Iron Bull with my F!Dalish Elf.  Recruited him.  Flirted with him every chance I got.  Took him on every mission.  Did his personal quest.  Kept trying to talk to him, but only had "Goodbye" as an option.  Never got his romance to start.

I figured it was something that would trigger near the end of the game similar to Mass Effect where the LI comes to you before the final mission.  Then I heard that you could bring your LI with you to the ball in Orlais, and have special options - I had already completed the ball and never had any special options with IB.  I wasn't sure if I had been locked out of his romance since I had absolutely *no* conversation options with him in Skyhold.  Then I talked to Krem and magically I started getting conversation options with him again...  Not many, but it was a start.  I figured I was back on track to romancing him.

So, I've also been bringing Dorian along with me every mission.  He's actually probably my favorite character so far - in part because of his hilarious party banter.  So, I was a little confused at first when the banter revealed that him and Iron Bull had started sleeping together.  Didn't really think anything of it at first - since Bull seemed like a naturally promiscuous character, and I thought we were supposed to take from it that they had a fling and that was pretty much it.

Then I talk to Bull again in Skyhold and find out that they're in a relationship...  0o

Did I miss something?  How do you romance Bull?  I want to go back and pull up an earlier save - I don't know though that I have one early enough to change things...  Probably not because I only have the autosaves and my one manual save that I keep overwriting.

I mean, I suppose I can always change it in the Keep - but that's only going to affect future games, and not have any impact on this playthrough...   Really sucks because I actually *really* love how my Inquisitor has turned out (also 77 hours in), and I *really* wanted to romance Bull....  :/

Just don't know how to react or what to do really...

Aww, really Bull and Dorian end up together? That's...cute. I'm romancing Dorian so I didn't get that banter.

Uhm, I'm sorry you lost the chance to flirt with IB. I have heard he is one of the more difficult romance options. Have you done his personal quest (deciding between the Qun and his chargers)? Have you slain a dragon with him in your party?

Did is personal quest.  I was under the impression the slaying the dragon is something you need to do after you sleep with him for the first time.  0o

If not, then idk - maybe I can put it on easy and take on a dragon?  Level 15 and don't think I can take one on yet... aren't they supposed to be end game bosses, essentially?

Edit:  Also I remember reading he was supposed to be the easiest one - which is why I'm so confused by this all.  0o

He's oblivious to your flirts. He however gets massive approvals if you take him to slay a dragon. The one at the Hinterlands is the easiest of the ten (if you're a Knight Enchanter-mage or have Viv in the party, that makes it a LOT easier).

You also get a special cutscene when you speak to him at Skyhold after slaying the dragon which, IIRC, triggers the romance.

Dragon is not obligatory to start the romance. You can sleep with him and have two romantic conversations with him right after personal quest, if your approval is high enough(I know this from personal experience). Dragon is just this massive approval booster, so for many it helps to push approval to romantic point. You need the dragon to commit to relationships with him, though, because that dragon tooth necklace seems to be qunari version of wedding rings.

The problem with romances in this game, however, that main romances (Blackwall and Cassandra) have a priority, so if you flirt with everyone, chances are you are locked in romance with Blackwall already. My friend had the same problem with romancing Cullen. She was flirting with everyone just for fun, but was going to end up with Cullen. But after some point Cullen started to refuse her advances. And that's how she found out she's Blackwall's girlfriend. I do not know how you play, of course, but it might be the case. She was lucky, though and it happened in the middle of the game, so situation could be salvaged by flirting Blackwall up to the romance scene and then dumping him, but in your case it's already too late, I'm afraid.

Also, I'm not sure, but isn't Bull's romance available only if you made him tal-vashoth? At least, I never heard about a romance with him if you save that ship instead of Chargers. But I might be wrong.

You get an approval boost if he becomes Tal-Vashoth, so I would imagine that's the reason most people who are romancing him go that route.

Playing a female elf, and never flirted with Blackwall.  I did flirt with Cassandra though, because I saw the "flirt" option come up and thought 'hey, why not?'  - actually glad I did because it came across more like her and my Inquisitor were becoming friends, rather than my Inquisitor wanting to hook up with her.

Aside from that, I've flirted with Dorian a couple times, and the dwarf scout.  Could it be I'm locked in to a romance that has no way of continuing because I'm playing a female character?  0o

So, taking the Bull with me to slay a dragon solved the issue.  I got like 5 different cutscenes back to back, which culminated in him showing up in my room.  Glad I still had a save before him and Dorian started talking about a relationship - I'm sure I would've been locked out by then.

I made one flirt with cassandra, but that doesn't count, does it??

In my playthrough I was a flirt and always picked the romantic conversation options. Be careful if you do this because I had entered into a romantic relationship with Blackwall and it had stopped any progression for me with Iron Bull. I did everything I could with IB like his personal quest and killed a dragon with him but got nothing. So I went to Blackwall on a hunch and figured out how to basically break up with him. Instantly got the rest of the conversations with Iron Bull.
